Updated: 13-Sep-2016
Beautiful period house close to beaches and La Rochelle Quiet Countryside Location, Within 30 Mins Of Beaches And Within 1 Hour To Most Major Attractions

Our House was built in 1814. Its a very comfortable large 240m2 family friendly home retaining all its original charm, with beamed ceilings, stone walls, stone fireplaces, yet it has all the modern conveniences necessary for a nice relaxing holiday- wifi, satellite TV, Washing machine, Dishwasher, Microwave etc. There is four large bedrooms two with double beds and two twin rooms all looking out onto our beautiful well maintained garden with its Terrace, heated pool and a hammock between the trees for those lazy sunny afternoons. For the Balmy evenings theres a cool secluded courtyard out front where you can enjoy a glass of Pineau des Charentes and gaze up and watch the star show late into the evening. Our Home is not a gite, so you will be completely left alone unless you would like to avail of a cleaner that we can provide during your stay. We also have an English speaking lady close by should you need help with anything at all.

About the Owner

Hi My name is Colm O'Brien, I'm married to Mairead and we have lived in Belgium for the past 20yrs. We have 3 boys, Jake 14, Danny 1 and Joshua 8. We're an Irish family, me being from Dublin and my wife Mairead from Tipperary. I've run my own food related business for many years having spent quite some time working in Michelin starred kitchens in Belgium. I love being in the Charente maritime, as the food and ingredients are to die for! We live just outside Brussels, so have the busy city life to escape when we come down to the relative quietness of Marsais.

"The ideal relaxed, family stay"

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been happier during our stay in Marsais - our first foreign hols with our 2yo and the walled garden, secure pool, large lawn and acres of space inside (the bedrooms are vast and cot provided was excellent quality) made the whole trip a joy from beginning to end. The fully fitted kitchen was a really boon, sharp knives, lots of pots and pans and more than a rusty bottle opener for utensils meant that we could really make the most of the local produce and cook each evening. The pool table was a great asset for those rainy afternoons. The relaxed homely interior meant we could relax with our toddler and thanks to the shutters and thick stone walls he slept solid 12 hour nights!

The location means a car is essential, but the house is perfectly positioned to pop into the local towns for sightseeing and supplies, or even La Rochelle (under 40 mins) then escape back to the rural bliss of Marsais. We'll be back!

Fantastic Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a week in Marsais, I have to say we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We have never stayed in this area in France and were not disappointing either. It is in a great area to explore or to simply enjoy the house and garden.

The swimming pool and garden is a great and is very safe for children.

We loved the enclosed patio area to the front!

The house itself is very large and more than well equipped with everything you would need and more!

They have a great selection of toys, books and dvd's for all ages.

The house is spotlessly clean and the pool is cleaned on a regular basis.

We loved our holiday here and cannot wait to return someday!!

A most enjoyable holiday

  • 5 of 5

The house was welcoming and beautifully presented when we arrived late at night. The lady who looks after it had the heating on and had provided a few things thoughtfully in the fridge.

The property was very clean and is well maintained. The lady and her husband were helpful and prompt when we had an issue with the electricity and gave us some super suggestions of places to cycle and eateries to visit.

One daughter learned to cycle in the lane outside the property during our holiday and my son played tennis on the village court (free) each day.

The information provided for shopping was accurate and the pizzeria in Surgeres was a good recommendation.

Their pool was not in operation (which we knew about beforehand)but the public pool they recommended was excellent.

We all slept well in the shuttered and spacious bedrooms.

I would recommend this property to a friend or relative

We loved it

  • 5 of 5

We were recommended a stay at this house by a friend because we wanted a break from our hectic daily schedule. This house provided exactly that! It's a lovely tranquil and peaceful haven that allowed us to fully relax for 10 days.

The location is great, because it is in a quiet area that is close enough to enjoy sightseeing, markets and supermarkets as well.

We enjoyed 10 days of sunshine by the pool, which provided a nice refreshing dip. The pool was safe and warm enough for our 1 year old toddler to enjoy and we loved that we could put the cover on it, so she could roam the big garden by herself.

She had plenty of plants to discover and particularly enjoyed the butterfly bushes.

We also enjoyed lots of barbecues on the terrace. The fully equipped kitchen provided plenty of space to prepare for this.

In the evening we would retreat indoors in the cosy lounge and watch some tv or read some of the books that were already on the premises.

Some of the best nights sleep we have had since our baby was born were in this house, the bedrooms are spacious, quiet and stay cool due to the big walls and shutters.

This house really provided the relaxing calm holiday that we were looking for, but I think it can definitely be enjoyed by people that are looking for a more active holiday as well. We would not hesitate to recommend it to our friends and we will defintely be returning ourselves.

Dream holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here last summer and found the house perfect for a family of five, and could have accommodated another family easily! Colm & Mairead did everything in their power to ensure a warm welcome and stay. The description of the property and facilities is spot-on and we found everything spotlessly clean and in good working order. Everything we needed was provided. The great weather only improved on this and we took full advantage of the heated pool (with security cover!). Near to many beautiful beaches and lovely very reasonably priced restaurants in the vicinity. Plenty of local daily markets nearby too for speciality foods and drink. Another bonus was the absence of mosquitos! Thoroughly recommended! Thanks guys, we'll be back,

From the Owner

We have visited the Charente Maritime every year for the last 9 years and we decided to buy a house here in beautiful Marsais. . Its a great area for getting around seeing the sights, and every year we discover something new to do. We're never bored and we can holiday as fast or as slow as we wish! Its a great area of France if your into your food and wine. whilst being quite simple in tastes, produce from the Charente is honest good fresh food. Seafood is amazing, game in Autumn and fruit and veg that actually taste of what they are supposed to be! We fell in love with the Charente, more because of the people then anything else. No matter where we go we are welcomed warmly.

From the Owner

As its pretty flat everywhere, its wonderful for cycling. Our 8yr old has been on many 5km plus cycles with us here as the roads are so quiet and easy to cycle on. So we have bikes at your disposal, one equipped with a baby carrier. Only 5 minutes away is a small airfield where you can take a tandem ride in the skys above, wonderful experience! Our pool is always warm as its heated, and as the house is fully private you really feel like your on a secluded holiday. The neighbours are all lovely people, french speaking only! There is a telescope for budding astronomers as the night sky here is something special. Wild life is pretty amazing too, you can expect to get bored with the amount of birds of prey you'll see, and if you wander out at dusk you'll see deers, hares, wild boar, pine martens, hedgehogs, owls, foxes and I've even seen a badger close by. Lizards are regular visitors to the walls around the house, and snakes (not deadly!) can sometimes be spotted at the local stream as can South American Cobayes and crayfish too! Its a bird watchers paradise which isn't my strongest point however one of our bird watching guests has returned several times and always finds something new!
