Hooks Barn is recently converted ( October 2013 ) and has every home comfort you will need. It is a perfect base for a weeks holiday or a short break. Situated on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean, about 4 miles from the historic market town of Ross On Wye. It is ideally situated to make use of the many tourist attractions and facilities available in this picturesque area.


No smoking in either the Barn or the grounds.

If you are a smoker we request you book elsewhere.

No Pets, No Children. (you should be aware that we have two cats who may show a friendly interest in you.)

Freeview TV and DVD player provided.

Well equipped kitchen provided. (Not Food)

There is a patio/BBQ area just outside the Barn. You have exclusive use of a private area within our garden, with great views of surrounding countryside.

You have your own parking space.

Maximum Occupancy – Hooks Barn is a two person (double bed) accommodation. No other guests are allowed to stay overnight.

Pets – No pets are allowed, however you should be aware that we have two cats who may show a friendly interest in you.

Age Restrictions – Adults only. (Over 21)

Access – We are sorry, but Hooks Barn is not wheelchair friendly due to the bedroom and shower being upstairs.

Smoking – Hooks Barn is strictly Non Smoking.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.

If you are a smoker we request you book elsewhere.

Arrival and Departure times – unless agreed beforehand.

Arrival after 2.30pm please. Please vacate by 11am on the day of departure.

Please leave the property in a clean condition. A charge will be asked for if the property is left in an unacceptable condition.

About the Owner

Hooks Barn is owned by a Potter and a Comedian – Joan and William. We both went to art school, Joan studied ceramics, and William performance art. Joan now teaches pottery and William mows the lawn.

We spent 3 years converting Hooks Barn into a beautiful holiday home. Although a builder did the roof, with electricians and plumbers drinking endless cups of tea, the hard graft was done by us.

Hooks Barn is attached to the far end of Hooks Cottage, which is our home. But your privacy is paramount and we will not bother you unless you request it.

A Gem in the Forest

If you don't enjoy stunning scenery, fantastic restaurants and pubs, historic towns and staying in a very comfortable residence then this is not for you. However you would be missing a golden opportunity to see England at its best with William and Joan nearby to look after you and guide you to where the most popular walks and places to eat are. Their welcome and friendliness makes you want to return and relax in peaceful surroundings. We would recommend anyone who enjoys the same things as we do to give them a try.You will not be disappointed! Many thanks for a memorable holiday.

Great base for exploring the area.

We loved this property. It was really cosy with everything catered for.

We liked the local gardens and National Trust properties, so this cottage is well placed to go exploring.

William and Joan made us feel welcome. And we were able to use a private part of the garden for sitting out. Although we didn't have the best weather, we still enjoyed our stay, as we were able to curl up with books in the evenings.

The bedroom. Was comfortable with a good bed and the bathroom was more than adequate with good electric shower, basin and toilet.

We enjoyed this cottage and would recommend it to others wanting to explore this lovely area.

Hooks barn was much more than we had hoped for. Really excellent property in beautiful surroundings.

From the moment William met us outside until we sadly posted the keys through his letterbox, we enjoyed every moment of our stay at Hooks.

The conversion from an old cider barn has been tastefully done. The living space downstairs has plenty of space for a couple with a well equipped modern kitchen, table for two and comfortable roomy double settee. There is a tv, DVD player and WiFi.

Upstairs is also quite roomy with a comfortable double bed and a spacious ensuite shower room. The shower is particularly good and pumps out plenty of hot water if needed.

Hooks has been nicely decorated and the crockery is made by Joan which all adds to that individual feel.

Outside William has provided three private patio areas on different levels with lovely views across the valley. One of the areas is even under cover if you wish to sit out when the weather is not so good.

There are plenty of excellent walks near by, which are all described in the information pack provided and encourage you to get out and enjoy the surrounding forest and countryside.

We had the perfect week staying here and will undoubtedly be looking forward to going back to stay again in the future.

Very enjoyable stay at Hooks Barn

We have stayed in many holiday cottages but none better than this one. The welcome from the owner was very friendly and informative. They definitely went 'the extra mile' to make our stay enjoyable. The garden area was fantastic and we were blessed with warm sunny weather so made good use of it.

The cottage was clean, well maintained and very comfortable with special little touches like fresh flowers and homemade jam, delicious. Thank you very much.

Wonderful cottage in an awesome environment

We've been at Hooks Barn for eleven days and it was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed every single day. Joanns and Williams great hospitality, the well equipped cottage and a wonderful weather made these days special!

We had amazing hiking tours through the Wye valley, the Forest of Dean and the near Black Mountains.

If you want to have some wonderful days you will get them at Hooks Barn, Lea Bailey!

Brilliant location. There are forest walks right out the door, so if you arrive with supplies its possible to park the car, and not use it again. On the other hand there are also plenty of things to do within a short car ride.

  • Notes on accommodation: Non Smoking. No smoking on any part of the property. We request that if you are a smoker you book elsewhere please. Heating and electric included. Plenty more details on our own website (visit link at the bottom of the page) Outside: French doors lead out of the barn onto a patio/BBQ area. This in turn leads into the owners garden, within which you have your own private seating area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. A great place for a G&T when the sun goes down. There is also a covered outdoor area. We are on the edge of the Forest of Dean - there is an old stone boundary marker from 1830 in the front garden. There is a forest trail 5mins from the door. The main forest centre is 15 - 20 mins by car. Utility Room: There is no utility room, but we have a washing machine in our cottage, and a clothes wash can be organised if needed. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and Linen provided and changed weekly. The Barn does not have a washing machine, but we can do you a load in ours by arrangement. Other: Covered outdoor area - so even in light rain you can still be outside if you wish.
