About Mr James Inglis

Jim and I are both Scots. Jim's profession as a civil engineer took us to the Middle East, where we have lived and worked for many years.

Originally I worked in television, theatre and radio in Scotland, but when I joined Jim in the Middle East I diversified into teaching English as a foreign language, which I found very interesting and challenging.

Mr James Inglis purchased this barn in 2009

Why Mr James Inglis chose Aulnay

We always dreamed of owning a property in France (thanks to all those holiday programmes)we eventually bought a chateaux apartment not far from Angouleme. We owned the apartment for 5 years and rented it out successfully with Owner's Direct.

In 2009 we were looking for a bigger place and came across La Grange. We loved the look of the property with its Charente stone exterior; its spacious layout and beamed ceilings. There was however, a definite wow factor when we opened the back door and saw the size of the plot and the beautiful views over the fields . We were hooked. The house was secluded, but also close enough to a village and supermarket to make it work for us. We refurbished the property and recently added the heated swimming pool.

What makes this barn unique

We are very lucky that this area offers so many things to do, from days at the beach to going to the local markets; wine tasting,to days on rivers of the nearby towns. If you are sporty, there are so many options; canoeing, fishing, biking, riding. There are centres close by for all of these. To be honest however, we love just sitting in the garden watching the sun go down or walking over the fields to the pub in Aulnay on a Sunday (market day) . You can be as busy or relaxed you want.

We have many DVD's books, board games , water noodles for the pool, footballs , a recently added football table game to amuse the children.

Our aim as renters,is to make our guest's experience, as enjoyable and relaxed, as we would wish for ourselves. We will do our best to attain that.

Great Family Holiday Home

  • 4 of 5

We have just spent a very enjoyable week at Le Grange. The property is nicely renovated with great sized rooms. The pool was a huge hit with our three children who were delighted that it was kept at a fabulous temperature. This meant we could use it for long periods without getting cold! Jim and Doreen were incredibly helpful with top tips of where to go and things to do. They were also on hand to deal with any queries. The drive from La Rochelle airport was incredibly easy and there are several wonderful towns to visit in close proximity. Would highly recommend this property for a large family or two families travelling together. Thank you Jim and Doreen for a great time

Peaceful, idyllic and in beautiful surroundings. A charming place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous holiday at La Grange. The house was spacious and very well appointed with real rustic French charm. The owners, Jim and Doreen, were so helpful and welcoming and added peace of mind being next door as this was our first holiday with our 11month old Daughter. The first week of our holiday we were blessed with stunning weather, so we did little and made the most of relaxing in the heated pool and having many a BBQ in the evening. There is a near by Intermarche (5 Mins) so easy to stay well stocked up. The near-by town of Aulnay also has a selection of nice Restaurants, shops and other amenities, so we felt well catered for. The second week the weather changed so we made outings to St Jean D'Angley for a amazing meal at the Goule Benze, though there are many others of a high standard to choose from. Also near by was a zoo which was a great way to spend the day and fun for kids. Cognac is only 1hr away as is La Rochelle as is Ile De Ray and Ile D'Oreon. All of which we visited and had a great time. So there is a good mix being based at La Grange to either chill out by the pool or explore the local areas. We would highly recommend La Grange, we had a fabulous holiday and cannot thank Jim and Doreen enough for making it so with their advice, guidance and willingness to be on hand to help when needed. A really authentic French gem of a converted Farmhouse, that won't disappoint.

Fabulous peaceful setting and a gorgeous pool

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous week in La Grange. The house is spacious and the pool is beautifully maintained. Our children spent every possible minute swimming, and there are plenty of sun loungers around the pool for lazing around and drying off.

The local village of Aulnay is very sweet, with a good bakery and a Sunday morning market. We also sampled the local fish and chip van one evening - a long queue, but worth the wait. There is an excellent supermarket about 5 minutes drive from the house.

We visited St Jean d'Angely, which is a very pretty town with a great market (wonderful crepes), and Saintes, which has a fantastic Roman ampitheatre.

Doreen and Jim are just next door and very friendly and helpful.

We really enjoyed our holiday here and definitely recommend La Grange.

Spacious property with great pool and friendly owners

  • 5 of 5

We had not stayed in this area of France before, but we will definitely return. The owners Jim and Doreen were very welcoming and had great tips on places to visit and local markets. As they stay in the cottage next to the property they were easily available for any issues that we had and were always happy to help.

We originally booked the house with the intention of having a set of grandparents staying with us but unfortunately they could not make it, so the house did feel a little big for just the four of us (2 adults, a 5 year old and a 3 year old) but it did mean that we could all spread out and find some quiet space.

The house is very well equipped with table football, plenty of pool toys and garden toys and a kitchen with everything that you would need for preparing family meals. The house is even more spacious than it seems from the photos on the listing. The pool was very well maintained, a good size and comfortable temperature and our two children would have spent all day in it, if we had let them.

The local markets in Aulnay and surrounding towns had very good quality local produce. The Intermarche in Aulnay just 5 mins away also stocks everything you would need in terms of groceries and household goods.

The owners had also kindly provided a welcome basket for our first night, which included milk, butter, cheese, bread, fruit and wine. They also provided some bottled water for the first day.

We visited La Rochelle and Ile d'Re (about an hour and a half away) on two days of the holiday and Doreen gave helpful tips on what to see and where to park. La Rochelle is a lovely vibrant city with lots of fascinating history. We had lunch in the old harbour and visited one of the three historic towers that guard the port. We also went out for a short guided boat trip around the harbour. Ile d'Re is linked to La Rochelle by a road bridge and is worth the 16 Euro toll if you want to spend all day there. A beautiful island with an lovely relaxing artistic feel, local markets with even more of that great quality produce, good quality restaurants and great beaches.

We really enjoyed our holiday in Aulnay and did not want to leave at the end of the week. Jim and Doreen have a real gem of a house in a beautiful area of France. This property is ideal for family groups and we can highly recommend it.

Fabulous, peaceful getaway in unspoilt France.

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived, we fell in love with Le Grange. We were warmly welcomed by Jim and Doreen, who had the pool ready for us to jump into after a long journey. The house is amazing and bigger than we expected, with lots of room for people to find a space for a quiet moment. It comes well furnished and equipped for children, parents and grandparents. The pool is well-maintained and the children just did not want to come out of it. There are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas around the pool and the security gate was great to ensure our daughter didn't venture near the pool on her own. The area surrounding Le Grange is beautiful and peaceful with plenty to do. A visit to Saintes is well worth it with it's historical sights such as the Roman Ampitheatre and lots of lovely cafes for lunch, followed by a stroll along the river. Doreen and Jim were amazing and on hand for local information and help when we needed it. The riding stable owners were fabulous too and very accommodating when we asked if they could take our daughter out for a ride around the countryside! Le Grange is a beautiful house in a peaceful location for those that want to get away and relax, but also for those that want to visit the local area. A fabulous first trip to France and it won't be our last.

Peaceful barn in great location with fantastic pool

  • 5 of 5

We had a great two weeks holiday. Doreen and Jim looked after us really well. We all (4 adults and 5 kids) enjoyed the heated pool. The property is well equipped and had everything we needed.

The nearby village of Aulnay is great to collect the morning bread or enjoy a lazy coffee. St Jean d'Angely is very near and has good restaurants and activities. Futurescope and Cognac are in easy striking distance.

Throroughly recommended.
