About Lucy Dowson

We are a family of five - Lucy, Jim, our daughter Amelie 7, son Sam 5 and Bertie the dog. Both myself and my husband work in travel and have spent many years travelling to far flung places; never visiting the same place twice. However once our children arrived holidaying in the UK and going somewhere familiar has become somewhat more appealing. As as result we decided to buy a holiday home in the UK that we could use for family holidays. With fond memories as children holidaying in Cornwall we stumbled across Towan Valley and were instantly sold on the house, the development, the village of Porthtowan and of course the beach. To this day we have had many enjoyable weeks away with family and friends and I hope you enjoy our 'home away from home'!

Lucy Dowson purchased this house in 2012

Why Lucy Dowson chose Porthtowan

Come rain or shine, warm or cold, as a family we are on the beach for hours a day, surfing, rock-pooling, sand-castling, dog-walking, scrambling or generally having fun. When it's too wet we watch the waves from The Blue Bar! We eat fresh fish caught locally, and enjoy trying out so many local foodie haunts. We are incredibly lucky to have Mulberry in an up and coming area of Cornwall, a short walk to the beach. On each visit we discover more of the region, sharing our finds in the house folder. There's so much to do and see in such close proximity and we never tire of discovering more.

What makes this house unique

Mulberry is part of the holiday community of Towan Valley with its 28 houses and there are always new people to meet here. Located at the top of the development it is next to the field where cows graze and its paved patio adds a great private area for barbecues or children's play. It's a mere 50 yards from the car-park where there are outdoor showers to wash down the sand after surfing. We have enjoyed adding our own elements to the house from the wooden gig oars hanging on the wall to the Ordnance Survey map in the sitting-room: we hope our guests will enjoy our beautiful house!

Lovely house and holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at 24 Mulberry. The house is really nice, comfortable and modern, and feels very homely. It is well equipped throughout.

It is close to Porthtowan beach and was in a good location for getting around the area.

We would definitely recommend it.

Lovely house by the sea

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week with our 19 year old son and his friend and our 14 year daughter and her friend and our dog in August. The house is extremely comfortable with all mod cons and has a really relaxing feel! The coastal walks are stunning along with the beach and views around. We spent a few nights at the blue bar overlooking the beach watching the sunset with a few drinks, we also had dinner there a couple of nights which was very enjoyable. We all loved our week in porthtowan which I would highly recommend and also will hopefully return to again to soon!

Like our second home!

  • 5 of 5

We have been to Towan Valley four times now and of course will be returning to our second home again in the new year. As soon as we walk through the door we feel happy, calm, stress free and ready to start our fab holiday.

There is everything you need in our second home, you will want to come back for more.

The Blue Bar right near the beach is extremely family friendly with really nice food (especially naughty cheesy chips!)

We love Towan Valley 👦🏻👩🏼💁🏻👱🏽🐶🐶

A 5 minute walk downhill, (more uphill) down to the blue flag beach of Porthtowan, a RNLI seasonal lifeguarded beach. The beach has something for everyone, amazing surf, rock pools, sand dunes, caves, a sea water rock swimming pool, cliff walks and at low tide you can walk 1.5 miles to neighbouring Chapel Porth.

Mulberry is located 4 miles off the A30 and takes approx 5 hours from London on motorway and dual carriage way, there is very little single carriage driving!

Porthtowan is already a popular spot with its golden sandy beach, cliff walks outstanding natural beauty and a village with a great community feel in all seasons. Local amenities include the famous 'Blue Bar' with its great night-life and fun atmosphere, the Unicorn Pub, ice cream parlour, upmarket beach cafe, 'bucket & spade' shop, fish & chip shop, surf schools, post office, convenience shop, florist and children's park.

Near by is St. Agnes which is very similar to Porthtowan but on a larger scale with more local amenities to include a number of great restaurants, banks, supermarkets, butchers, baker and pharmacy.

The capital city of Cornwall, Truro, is 25 minutes away and is a great city to explore, the Cathedral is a must. St Ives, 16 miles away with its cobbled streets, harbour, beautiful beaches, plentiful shops, restaurants and galleries is a delight to walk around, even better is the train ride to St Ives - the most scenic in the UK!

There are also plenty of gardens to visit - Eden Project at St Austell, Lost Gardens of Heligan, and a plethora of national trust properties to discover, including the wonderful St Michaels Mount at Marazion, a stunning private house on it's own island!

The local area was the tin mining capital of the UK and there are plenty of reminders of this with many wheel houses dotting the landscape, some of which are now museums which you can visit including going down into the shaft.

Further afield the historic port of Falmouth is within easy reach, Falmouth boasts the third largest natural harbour in the world and is also home to the National Maritime Museum. You also have Penzance, Lands End and the Lizard a 45 minute drive away.

Golf courses are plentiful, many set on a cliff edge near by for both the experienced and amateur golfer. Four courses within 10 miles are Tehidy, Perranporth (links), Truro and Killiow (best for the low handicapper).

Lastly the beaches are the biggest draw and should you tire of Porthtowan (which is unlikely) there are many many more located a short distance away.
