This Authentic Charantaise property perfectly characterises the peaceful and uncomplicated atmosphere of rural France. Situated close to all the amenities you will require it is surrounded by beautiful countryside and yet has it’s own intimacy to ensure you have the best of both worlds. The property has plenty of space. There are four double bedrooms, three bathrooms and a large kitchen and dining area which connects through an archway into a spacious family room which has a bright and open feel to it. Through a doorway on the other side of the living area you will find the second living area and stairs up to the fourth bedroom and bathroom. There is also a small kitchen and utility room on the ground floor. Outside there is a full terraced area connected directly to the house. Perfect for relaxing in the afternoon sun. Leading from the terrace the steps take you up to the large heated swimming pool which has extended areas around the sides to allow for plenty of sun lounger.
We decided to buy this old farmhouse because we wanted somewhere to escape to when we needed to. Originally we looked further a field, Maine in the USA! But decided that would be a step too far! So we decided that France, where my parents live was a good choice and in fact they only live ten minutes away! Having spent many a long summer here we decided to start a new business venture and so it just made sense to let other people share the tranquility that is... Charente Calme!
The most enjoyable aspect of this property is its privacy and the tranquillity. Because of the available space it is also a great location to spend time with friends and family over a glass of wine …or two….and eat dinner from the barbecue!
In the evenings we have seen some of the most spectacular night skies including many shooting stars!
We were blessed with beautiful weather so thankfully we spend the majority of our time outside using the fantastic pool.
I feel that this home could offer so much more if it was given the care & attention that it deserves.
We have stayed in several "rustic" farmhouses in France & accept a few cobwebs & quirky details but after a very long drive we were disappointed to have to re-clean the home. Kitchen door was very dirty, huge spiderwebs adourned with flies in the kitchen & a lovely fly trap full of dead flies hangs over the kitchen worktops!
Lovely big windows in the lounge but with the sun shining through it once again reflected the neglect of the home, dusty & uncared for. Wi-fi had a very poor connection & had to use 3G outside, the Wi fi instructions given by the website are wrong & we finally worked out that the name on the router was the correct one.
If this property was given the attention it deserves it would be a beautiful holiday home but unfortunately the lack of attention to detail has let it down.
We made the best of it that we could & took full advantage of the gardens & pool.
Region was perfect and our dog loved exploring the countryside surrounding the farmhouse. Supermarkets & major towns close by & used the local vet in Ruffec to sign pet passport with no issues.
We had the most wonderful 2 weeks holiday in early July.
The name 'Charente Calme' truly reflects the nature of this beautifully renovated and serene hidden gem.
We stayed with our 21 year old daughter, 17 year old son and Spaniel and found the facilities and location had everything that we wished for and more.
The well maintained heated pool with extended patio and large garden offers complete privacy and there are numerous walks that can be taken directly from the house through rambling country lanes, with no traffic(loved by the dog!).
There is loads to do within a reasonable drive, including Futuroscope, La Vallee des Singes, activities on La Charente and visiting La Rochelle, making it well situated for days out. Equally, 5 minutes to the local Super U, many local markets and restaurants to choose from, makes getting fresh provisions and being well fed and watered, very simple.
Couldn't recommend it more highly for so many reasons.
This was our second stay at Charante Calme and we again booked for next year whilst still there! We hadn't planned three holidays in a row here, but we once again found it so relaxing and quiet with a house layout that works really well for the 6 of us. The pool is the main draw for our children, which is a great size with plenty of space around it. The house is plenty big enough, with all the charm you could want. However, best of all is that the property is in the middle of rural France, surrounded by sunflowers and corn, yet 1.5 miles from the Super U. Perfect for a holiday!
During this stay we experienced a problem with the dishwasher which was examined and replaced within 24 hours, causing minimum disruption. Great service!
We can't wait to be reunited with this house again next year.
We have stayed in a number of cottages over the years with our children, and the pool is always the first priority for us. This was why we originally chose this one and it did not disappoint. In fact, the pool was excellent with plenty of space around it so that the loungers did not crowd it and the children could jump in without everyone else getting splashed.
The house has to be most peoples idea of the French rural dream. Space, stone walls, beams, and oh so quiet (at least until we got there!). The space and layout worked really well for us: Granny at one end of the house with her own sitting room, bathroom, and bedroom, and my wife and I with our three children at the other end. Neutral territory was the spacious living room in the middle. I would imagine that the layout would also work really well for two families sharing.
One other thing that we loved was that, although very rural, the supermarket and bakers are only five minutes away in the car. We have never had it so easy for those emergency cheese and wine purchases.
We loved our stay here that we booked for next year before we came home and can't wait for next August!
We stayed here with our two kids 19 & 16 and our dog. This is a really well equipped holiday home, and everything you could want for a peaceful holiday. It was just what we needed. Although we wanted to get away from it all, the wi-fi was a real plus for us, we have two teenagers and a business to run, so we knew we could be online to deal with any problems and our mobiles worked there too.
We've had heated pools before and their idea of heating and ours have been literally poles apart, but this one, was warm as promised and a lot bigger than we had thought. We were only 4 but even if the place was full it was still plenty big enough.
It didn't worry me but the BBQ looked a little in need of some TLC, but actually it worked exceptionally well, though I know some would've preferred a gas one.
The kitchen is well equipped, dishwasher, washing machine and good cooker. Loads of crockery, cutlery etc. So hardly any washing up! Lovely light lounge overlooking the large garden and pool area.
Main double bedroom on ground floor with ensuite (shower over a bath)- worked well for us; the kids stayed upstairs (shower +loo upstairs). Stairs are little 'quirky' so would need to be very careful with small children/elderly on there. We didn't need but owners may have stairgates, definitely worth asking.
Surrounding Area: It is in a small village, with nothing but houses, surrounded by fields, at this time of the year, full of sunflowers. It is so quiet you can pretty much walk around without having to worry about any traffic. We walked everyday around the various blocks with the dog, you could, if you fancied it, even walk up to the big Super U and if you were feeling super energetic in to Sauze itself. However, it is only five minutes in the car from the Super U and boulangerie. This is on a main arterial road which gives you easy access to nearby towns and further afield if you want to explore.
Not much in Sauze to see, but has two bakers, and a tiny market on Thursday morning but had all you could want to pick up a meal. Ruffec is much bigger, good central market, shops and away from the town centre, it is also very pleasant by the river, nice restaurant on the weir there and picnic/BBQ places. We didn't go for many trips out but Confolens was worth a trip, Poitiers was a stop on the way home and would've definitely been worth a day trip and we also stayed in Le Mans on the way home fantastic medieval quarter.
Would love to go back again.
