About the property

Detached house in the hamlet of Tourtron, Nr. Cognac, Poitou Charentes, France, 2 Km From The Town Of Chateau Neuf Sur Charente,in Vinyards and sunflower fields

This is a delightful country property which is used as a holiday second home by the owners. It is furnished and equipped to provide all home comforts in a beautiful setting surrounded by vineyards and mature woodland, it is within walking distance of the beautiful Charente river and valley. We have always maintained a high standard of facilities in the house. One of the comments we get frequently is how well it is equiped and furnished. When we stay there we want the same ambience as at home and that is what we try to provide for our guests. This is a large property with 5 bedrooms and sufficient space for up 12 people. The house is built on 2 levels with an upper floor which consists of a large living area with open fire and doors opening onto a poolside terrace. This is a lovely bright area, flooded with sunlight in the morning. On this floor are 3 double bedrooms one with en-suite shower, a separate bathroom and toilet. The lower area is reached by a minstrel gallery staircase. The downstairs area consists of a second living area with open fire and a cosier feel as it is slightly smaller, this is where the TV is situated. This area remains cooler even on the hottest day as it doesn't have direct sunlight so can be a good place to keep cool.Leading off the lounge area is the dining area, a well equipped galley kitchen, 2 further double bedrooms and a shower room and toilet. The Garden is reached through patio doors and consists of a mature garden with several fruit trees and shaded areas to cool off in the summer sun. There is a built in BBQ in this area which is shaded and has a small table and chairs to sit at. The lower garden is terraced and goes down hill and to one side there is a bird watching hut. The terraces have become over grown but we are slowly regaining the area. We have not used the bird watching hut but the previous owner had it built for regular use. This area of the garden is fenced off but we leave the key in the house if you want to access this area but please supervise children as it is quite steep off the terrace. The property is secure with mature hedges and is accessed by a drive with security gates. The property is not over looked at all, very private and peaceful. The hamlet of Tourtron is right in the middle of the vineyards and sunflower fields. Very quiet and peaceful with some lovely walks around but very easy access to many other areas.

The house is built in the regions traditional style although only about 40 years old. The original house was extended some 30 years ago and doubled the accommodation size. The front of the house, upstairs is sunny all day long and this is where the swimming pool is sited. There is a paved area to one side and the rest is lawned. The side of the house is quite steep but accessible and again very sunny. The whole property is secure as the gates close off the drive and there are high hedges on all sides. We do have someone come in and maintain the pool while you are visiting, he lets you know when he is coming and will keep everything in good condition for you. Maintaining a swimming pool is very much an art. There is also a contact number for him if anything goes wrong and you need help.

About Sue Ward

We both work in the health service in busy, demanding

jobs. We live in a fairly rural area with our two dogs, Daisy and Henry. We have taken them to France recently and had a great time with them being welcomed. Henry is quite large and most French dog owners have small dogs so he was very much a talking point.

We have two grown up children and as a family we holidayed in France most years when they were small. Both our Son and Daughter enjoy coming to visit in France and feel that the house is very much a home from home. Our Son has actually bought his own house in 2014 and also spends as much time as he can in France.

We spend as much time as we can there and although have no plans to move to France on a permanent basis we would like to spend longer periods of time there. As life can be so hectic the one thing the house does is put everything back into perspective. It always feel as though a weight has been lifted when you arrive, you can sit in the sun, go for a swim or walk around the vineyards which we like to do first thing in the morning. We have several resident red squirrels in the garden and also a few visiting deer. We like to go out and about after a few days of peace and quiet. There is live music, art festivals and still so many things we haven't seen in the area. There some fabulous little restaurants in the most unexpected places which usually have set meals at very reasonable prices.

Sue Ward purchased this house in 2012

Why Sue Ward chose Saint-Simeux

France has always been special for holidays for us, we returned year after year. The diversity of the country and the life style has always been appealing. We have always felt welcomed and enjoyed which ever region we have holidayed in but we have been drawn back to the Charente region many times and for this reason we feel our house chose us.

Our house, in Tourtron came about by accident and has a special atmosphere. It is very peaceful and has wonderful views over the vineyards and down the valley. It is in a small hamlet very close to Chateuneuf sur Charente. Although rural and quiet you can be in one of the local towns or heading towards the coast very quickly. When we decided to open our house to guests we felt that as holidays are special we needed to give people as good an experience as possible. We feel it is a real home from home with a twist. We have done a lot of work on the house as it had become quite tired when we bought it and continually try to update and improve.

There is something for every one around here whether you are sporty, have an interest in art, want to explore the area or have an interest in food and wine but most importantly you will have a holiday to remember and re-charge the batteries.

What makes this house unique

The house is very welcoming and beautifully laid out. we have tried to make it a real home from home with every convenience to make your stay as restful as possible. It is a large and airy house, well laid out and with easy living arrangements. The swimming pool catches the sun all day long or you can sit on the terrace and watch the family enjoying themselves. The house is completely private but there are neighbours on both sides.

We supply some basic toiletries so you don't have to worry on arrival. We also supply things to help the house run smoothly when there are several people sharing. We want you to walk through the door and relax as there should be nothing you immediately need to think of apart from unpacking and opening a bottle of wine. The house and garden are safe and secure for all of the family. When you go on holiday you need time to stand still and allow you to relax and make the most of your time away.

There is a superb golf course a few minutes away, an inland beach with water sports 25 minutes and the park in Chateaneuf with its walks, river swimming and small beach area and bistro. Lots of good, inexpensive restaurants, walking, cycling, swimming, kyaking and much more. There is the Charente Maritime with all of its beaches and oysters just over an hour away. Come and visit us and enjoy your stay.

Wonderful Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5

This delightful house helped to create a very enjoyable holiday for this family of 5. Set in a quiet and peaceful hamlet, this private, clean, well equipped, well furnished, split level house, met all our needs. In fact, for the first time ever, our 2 twenty + year olds and 1 teenager, have agreed that they want to return next year. This certainly says something very positive about house and region. Finally at all stages we found the owners to be so supportive and helpful. We definitely recommend this house; 5 stars!!!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the review of our house, we are absolutely delighted with the comments. We think our house and the region is very special and we want everyone to have a great experience when they share our house. It is our home in France and we feel everyone coming to stay there are our personal guests and want them to have the best holiday experience possible. Everyone works so hard and at such a pace these days and this house just allows you time and space to re-set and unwind. I am particularly impressed that 20 somethings and teenagers agree, we have obviously done what we set out to achieve and facilitated a great family holiday. Thank you Gary and Sue Ward

Beautiful large house in quite village.

  • 4 of 5

We took our son and 2 grandaughters and our daughter, husband and 2 grandsons to this delightful large house in the tiny village of Tourtron which is surrounded by sun flowers and vines. The house is very well equipped and was very clean and tidy on arrival. The pool although not heated provided many hours of fun for the entire family and the built in BBQ was put to very good use .Although the house is in a lovely quite setting the nearest supermarket and 2 excellent restuarants are only 6-7 minutes away by car in Chateauneuf-sur-Charante.This is a truly delightful part of France for a vacation with many activities for both the young and old within a short car ride. The owners of the house Gary and Sue were delightful to deal with and we have no hesitation in recommending this outstanding holiday home. Jill and Bill Lee

Owner's Response: Our hour in France is very much our home in France and we really do enjoy sharing it with other people. We keep the house very much as a home and have had some really delightful guests and who often return. We are very honest with our descriptions of the house and area and that is reflected in the comments we get from out guests. We hope we treat every one who visits our house as a personal guest and take great delight in making sure that they have an enjoyable and memorable holiday.

A great place

  • 4 of 5

Great family house for our party of 8, spacious, all-age friendly including teenagers. Swimming pool was the highlight. Great surroundings for walks, cycling, visiting. Good restaurants nearby. Easy reach to La Rochelle by train. Ideal for lazing or active holiday. Vineyard owner a walk away. Bike direct delivered and collected bikes. Away from the maddening crowd yet within easy reach of varied activities. Highly recommended.

Tourtron is within easy driving distances of the Charente Maritime with its beautiful coastline and beaches. About 90 minutes away is la Rochelle with its attractive beaches and ancient harbour and town. La Rochelle also holds one of the regions best music festival in July. On every corner there is live music playing of every type to suit all tastes and there are ticket only concerts of an evening. Slightly further on is the wonderful seaside town of Royan with its many attractions and long, white sandy beach. For surfers the beaches of Lacanau are a must. The iles de Rey and Oleron are less than 2 hours drive. Inland beaches offering water sports are found at St Estephe, Angouleme and St Mathieu. St Estephe is about a 20 minute drive and the other 2 are slightly further about 30 minutes drive away.

The area is well served with airports which are easily accessible. Bordeaux from Gatwick, 1 hours flight and 50 minutes drive, La Rochelle and Limoges have frequent flights, the same drive time, many of them have holiday deals available. Rail link on Eurostar from London, TGV to Angouleme which is half an hour drive away. The drive down is around 8 hours from Calais down the AutoRoute and we can supply a good, straight forward route. We also take the ferry from Portsmouth and have a cabin to sleep over night and then it is approximately 6 hours down from Le Havre. A car is essential to explore the area.

Tourtron is midway between Angouleme and Cognac. Cognac has distilleries with tours, markets and a famous jazz festival in July. Angouleme is an ancient walled, citadel town. Lots of restaurants, and the famous Bande Dessinee comic strip cartoon festival, in July. The Circuit des Ramparts is also held in Angouleme in September, entrants from all over Europe. The Roman town of Saintes with its Amphitheatre, about an hours drive. St Simon and Chateauneuf are a few minutes drive or cycle away.

Further Details:

All of the local towns have the usual large supermarkets in abundance. There are many regional and local markets held on various days, we have a full list in the information folder in the house. The local bakeries are usually open first thing and then again late afternoon where everything is freshly baked. There are many local bars, bistro's and restaurants. As you would expect in such an area, as well as the Cognac distilleries there are some very good local wines and Pineau's available often from small, local vineyards. In Jarnac which is only a 20 minute drive away there is the main Courvoisier distillery. Beautiful building but also some fascinating tours, there is a particular tour which involves deserts made with Cognac which is not to be missed when it is running. The local roads have many signs directing you to stop and try some of the regions favourite wines. All of the local towns have the major banks and post offices. The area is extremely diverse in what it has to offer, with its mild climate, time seems to stand still. Many of the small towns hold amazing secrets. In St Meme le Carriers which is 4km away there is water skiing and micro flights, in Bassac there is a 1000 year old Abbey which is a year round retreat. In Jonzac, 30 minutes away there is a large leisure complex and spa. Vibrac has an ancient Presbytery by the river. In the village there is a sports company who run Kyaking, fishing and canoeing available, English spoken.

The house and village are surrounded by vineyards, Sunflower fields in summer, woodlands, lanes safe to walk along and the pretty, local Limestone villages. There is a cool bag available in the house so you could pack a picnic and cycle in the area. There is a local company who hire cycles and all safety equipment, they will deliver and collect bikes at a very reasonable rate - go to and Natasha is very helpful. There are many cycle routes to suit all ages and abilities, Natasha can advise. Any season of the year you will find a calming, peaceful atmosphere, with opportunity to indulge in any exercise you fancy or none at all.

The Charente region is very welcoming to visitors, the people are friendly and helpful. It is a very eclectic region with many small villages holding their own festivals and events. Every village has its own market and food is very much at the heart of events.During the year their are many local Brocantes which are a cross between a car boot sale and an antiques fair, fascinating to wonder around early on a Sunday morning.

The area is well served with a good road network making travelling so easy to places you want to visit. We feel it is a very special area and one that we find guests return to again and again.
