House In Unspoilt Foothills Of The Pyrenees

Overview

Property

Updated: 25-Nov-2016
House in Puibolea, Huesca Province, Aragon, Spain - A Perfect Spot To Unwind In Genuinely Peaceful Surrounding

The house is situated in the quiet and welcoming village of Puibolea, which has a permanent population of about 40 inhabitants. It is an authentic village situated at a height of 700m commanding magnificent views in all directions: mountains to the north, hills to the east and west, rolling plains to the south. There is no traffic as the village is at the end of the road. The house is a restored three floor building with a cozy cottage atmosphere- its structure is based around a large central stone column with solid wooden beams. On the ground floor there is the mainroom comprising a sitting area with sofa and armchair and wood burner, and a dining area with large oak table. Next to this is the fully equipped kitchen. On the first floor there are 3 double bedrooms. bathroom and toilet and additional toilet. There is a large multi-purpose space on the top attic floor, with locking floor level windows facing south and east and two additional beds if necessary. This room has a pinewood floor with rugs making it an excellent play area for children or quiet relaxing place for adults- yoga, reading, meditation, siestas.....

About the Owner

I hope you will find the information given here helpful in giving you a clear idea of the house. If not, don’t hesitate to get in touch directly with me. I have been living in Spain for the last 25 years, and for a few of them in this house in Puibolea. I am now based near Barcelona where I live with my family. I keep close ties with the village and use the house occasionally for residential language and birdwatching courses.

vacances en famille à Puibolea

  • 5 of 5

Perfect countryside getaway

  • 5 of 5

A group of 5 of us travelled from Barcelona to here for a long Easter weekend and I can safely say we were all blown away by the property and its surroundings. In short, we're already planning a trip back and can't say enough good things about our stay.

Firstly, Kevin was incredibly welcoming after we had serious delays due to car rental issues. Also, his knowledge of the area which he so generously shared with us meant we immediately had our bearings and were ready to explore from day one.

Secondly there is a real abundance of things to do and see near the house, of which we only really scratched the surface. An endless number of walks, places to swim, beautiful tiny towns with local produce, and not to mention the fact that all 5 of us became birdwatching addicts having never really tried it before (except one) - we saw at least one bird of prey every day.

And finally the house itself - comfortable beds, two toilets / one bath/shower. Fully equipped kitchen (coffee machine and teapots included!!) and last but not least the top floor which has amazing views of the plains out towards the Pyrenees and is a lovely place to relax. Watching the sunrise from here was quite a unique experience. We also made full use of the wood burner and the patio served us well at meal times.

All in all a fantastic stay and we can't wait to come back.

Perfect for a simple holiday.

  • 5 of 5

It was great. Our needs are few. We catered almost exclusively for ourselves. There are restaurants nearby but we didn't use them. There's a supermarket 20 minutes away in Huesca & it's hard to miss it if you come along the motorway from Zaragoza. The bird life here is amazing, and the plants and butterflies are just as good. The owner is very friendly; he is a mine of local knowledge, and the house is full of books and useful leaflets. We loved it.

A Place for Us

  • 5 of 5

Puibolea is a perfect bolt-hole for ‘getting away’ but is also very much somewhere to go to. The house does, as the old cliché says, ‘nestle’ in the mountains ; it is like a nest and seems to belong to the many large birds birds of prey which can be seen any day slowly circling above. For ornithologists, the site is a gift.

Our journey to the house began from the airport in Zaragoza from where we easily collected the hire car. Staying overnight in Zaragoza meant that the journey to the mountains began refreshed and there was time for some site-seeing in the city itself before setting off. The cathedral is especially worth taking time to visit like the many great churches in a city such as Rome. Here too, there is evidence of the Roman legacy. Goya’s connection with the city and its environs is also worth looking into.

Before the final climb up to the house, we stopped at a large and well-stocked supermarket in Huesca and bought most of the provisions for our stay; we were able to supplement them at the small bakery-cum-general store in Bolea with freshly-baked bread, a range of local sausage, cured meats and cheeses and, for a few euros, a selection of local wines. The Saturday morning fruit and veg van in Puibolea was an added bonus. Having shopped and found our bearings a little, the trip to the house was straightforward.

There is ample parking near the house, next to the church (now unused). We walked down some steps and into the front patio area and then into the cool downstairs room. The kitchen is adjacent to the day-room and is home to a solid oak dining table which was always to pleasure in itself to sit at. The bedrooms and furniture are comfortable and each one has a restful view across the panoramic mountains and farmland. There is not a sound except for the occasional hint of birdsong.

Puibolea is a place for doing nothing; a place to escape the pressures of work; to sit, to read, to look around, to cook and eat and to savour the local gastronomy and wines. At the same time, a trip into nearby Bolea might take you to the swimming pool where you can cool off and rest on the rich turf surrounds and use the pool bar and local restaurant but still be assured that the essential tranquillity of the area remains undisturbed. Travelling a little further, you will find the castle of Loarre and other places with architectural gems such as the Renaissance Collegiate church in Bolea. On certain days of the year, all local towns and villages host their own

Peace and quiet

  • 4 of 5

We spent a peaceful few days in this charming house. The views were wonderful and we were able to see lots of birds of prey, one even sat just outside the front door! A lovely swimming pool was only a 10 minute drive away and we visited castles and churches. We will definitely be back to explore more of this lovely area.

Location

From the Owner

I bought the house as a family home when I was working as a teacher in Huesca. The situation of the house is especially attractive as it is in a genuinely wild area yet within easy reach of a provincial capital.

Activity and Interests

Travel:

Some form of transport is necessary-Car,motorbike or bike. Car rental is available in Huesca and other main towns and cities.

The house is 25km from motorways to Barcelona, Zaragoza and Madrid. There is a minor road from Huesca to the house in Puibolea.

Distances:

Bolea (5km/8min): nearest large village with a few facilities.

Huesca (18km/20min): train, bus and motorway connections with capital cities.

Zaragoza (85km/1h): high speed train to Madrid/Barcelona, regular flights to UK.

Barcelona (290km/3h): international flights. Motorway connection.

Madrid (400km/4h): international flights. Motorway connection.

Bilbao (310km/3.5h): UK ferries and international flights.

Calais (1300km/15h): Channel tunnel/Ferry.

Further Details:

CULTURE & HISTORY

The area is steeped in history with numerous Roman and Arabic remains. In Puibolea itself there are fascinating wine bodegas hollowed out of the hillside, testimony to its Moorish and Mudejar past which can be visited on request.

In the vicinity there are places of outstanding historical and cultural interest such as Loarre castle, one of Europe’s best preserved medieval examples and the 16th century Gothic-Mudejar Collegiate church in Bolea with its outstanding early 16th century altarpiece. In addition, the provincial capital of Huesca has museums and many buildings of historical and cultural interest.

WINE TASTING

The area is known for red wine production, especialy the area of Somontano.

HOME-BASED ACTIVITIES

In the house itself the top room is well suited to gentle pursuits such as yoga, meditation, reading, drama groups and board games. On a clear night what about some star gazing?

Facilities

From the Owner

The house has a homely feel where visitors immediately feel at home. The small village community is extremely welcoming without being intrusive- a quality that I have felt strongly over the last 15 years and that visitors have often commented on. It is equally a place to relax and unwind or to enjoy exhilarating outdoor pursuits. As a keen naturalist (especially birdwatching) the house is a perfect base from which to explore a wide range of nearby habitats (mountains, dry plains, woodland, scrub, wetland...). But perhaps its greatest joy is being able to walk straight out of the front door into the country.
