Situated on the edge of the traditional French village of La Caillere Saint Hilaire amidst rolling countryside, we are located within easy reach of main attractions and larger towns. For those wanting to immerse themselves in the French way of life a popular bar is located nearby. Our two recently renovated spacious period gites both retain plenty of character with stone walls and wonderful exposed beams throughout. Superbly equipped with everything needed for a memorable holiday including uk digital TV. The properties can be rented independently or together for larger groups or two families holidaying together. There is a 10m x 5m swimming pool and a tennis court set in private enclosed gardens. There is plenty of space for children to play and of course, our two friendly labradors are always keen to play! They are very safe with children of all ages. Our 2 gites are available all year round with heating and wood burners for the more chilly nights. A perfect location for Christmas!

Old Garlands is a delightful gite, recently renovated to a high standard set in the two acre garden of the owner's home, where there is a 10m x 5m salt-water swimming pool, a hard tennis court and plenty of room for children to play - or perfect for you to lounge around on a comfy sunbed, catching up on all that reading!

There are two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed and access to separate bathroom with bath, wash basin and WC. The second bedroom has two single beds.....this room has en-suite shower, washbasin and WC.

The property has two large salons with extremely generous sofas, free Wi-fi access, TV/DVD, dining table, well stocked bookcase and large wood-burning stove.

The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and the various bits and pieces you would hope to find. A true "Home from Home"

All linen and towels for indoor use are supplied by the owner (please bring your own towels for poolside use)

Richard & Sue own La Treille. Having lived in the South East of England all our lives, we were looking for a slower pace of life in a more rural setting.

We looked at many properties over a number of years before we visited "La Treille" and we were blown away with the stunning setting. So many of our guests have come back to stay for three to four years in succession as they have found the setting to be so peaceful.

Stunning period Gite set in beautiful grounds

We stayed at Old Garlands with our 2 young children. The gite has been recently renovated to a very high standard, with solid wood floors, fully equipped kitchen and great shower! The living area was really comfortable and there is a table outside for al fresco dinning. The gardens are lovely and the whole place was really relaxing. The kids and adults loved the pool on those hot balmy days! All in all a very relaxing stay and I'm sure we will be back. Thanks Richard and Sue and Barney and Rubble the dogs !!

Fantastic place, can't wait to go back!

My husband and I stayed here for a week and had a brilliant time. We both work long hours and so it was great to get away for a week. It was so quiet there and with the garden and the pool we spent the first few days just relaxing. Old Garlands was surprisingly big inside with 2 double en-suite bathrooms and was clean and well equipped with the internet and tv.

We had a warm welcome from Sue, Richard and their two dogs (who we loved!) and they were always happy to help with ideas of places to go and see. With the Mervin forest and beach within a short drive we didn't get bored and will definitely be going back soon!

Great for relaxing or being more active, highly recommend!

Location

From the Owner

La Caillere is located in the Southern area of the Vendee, an area of rolling countryside dotted with lakes and forests. Our home is at the edge of a village in a semi-rural location. Plenty of things to do and see for the more active, but peaceful and relaxing if that is what you prefer. We are lucky enough to own a fabulous period property (dating back to Napoleonic times) with huge character and a superb two and a half acre garden. A perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunshine! Access from the UK is easy, with regular flights from several UK airports to Nantes (1 hour), La Rochelle (1 hour) and Poitiers (90 minutes). Driving is easy too, (much easier than in the UK) with ferry crossings to Caen, Cherbourg, Le Harve, Dieppe, Calais and don't forget the Euro Tunnel.

Nearest Airport : Nantes or La Rochelle at 90 Kilometres Nearest Beach : La Trance sur Mer at 60 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

We are less than an hour from coast with the resorts of La Tranche sur Mer and La Faute which look across to Ile de Re and offer sheltered swimming, sailing and windsurfing facilities.

It is possible to walk along these fabulous, sandy beaches for miles without interruption.

A lakeside beach at Mervent is just a 15 minute drive away.

Les Sable D'Olonne and La Rochelle are also within an hours' drive.

Approximate travel times

Look for flights from various UK airports with Easyjet, Flybe, Ryan Air, BA.

Nearest: Nantes airport - 1 hour 15 minute drive.

La Rochelle airport - 1 hour drive.

Regular ferry routes to St Malo - 3.5 hours drive.

Caen Port - 4 hours drive.

Calais - 6 hours drive.

Most guests use the Eurotunnel and drive......gives you a chance to take home plenty of the excellent and superb value French wines, cheeses etc!

Distances:

La Caillere (4kms) is a large village with a range of shops consisting of a small well stocked supermarket, boulangerie, boucherie (superb meat!) poissonerie (weekends only), pharmacies, banks, bar/tabac, petrol station and restaurant (the owners are regulars and recommend it!!).

The larger town of Chantonnay is just 10 minutes drive, with 2 hyper markets, banks, restaurants

There are many fantastic places to visit within easy reach.

Close to us, there is the Tower of Bazoges en Pareds, the Museum of the Two Victories Clemenceau-de Lattre at Mouilleron en Pareds, the Mining Centre at Faymoreau, the abbeys at Nieul sur l’Autise and Maillezais, the Forest of Mervent- Vouvant.

you can visit nearby Fontenay-le-Comte with its ancient streets of Renaissance houses and the vast Mervent-Vouvant forest to name just a few.

Vouvant is 15 minutes away - this medieval town is recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France with it's medieval ramparts, cobbled streets and pretty houses. The town is well known as a village of painters and there are arts and crafts shops as well as some lovely cafes and restaurants.

There are many historical places of interest and great theme parks at Puy-du-Fou (45min) and Futuroscope (90min). There are also many towns and cities to explore (about an hour by car) – La Rochelle, Nantes, Niort, Cholet, La Roche sur Yon (45 mins), Poitiers (90 mins).

The Grand Parc du Puy du Fou (around an hour) provides a great day out for the family.

An enormous network of clearly marked footpaths lead from La Treille & Old Garlands - you can go for a stroll or ramble for hours; an American-style riding stable is close by, which offers lessons or accompanied rides through the woods for adults and children; The forest of Mervent with it's mountain bike centre is 20 minutes away; the 127 hectare lac Rocherau is nearby with fishing, boating and a beach. The seemingly endless sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are about an hour distant where you can take advantage of the Vendée's wonderful climate.

And for the more culturally minded, the numerous châteaux of the Loire, local museums and galleries are waiting to be explored.

A welcome pack can be made available on arrival - larder basics + a few treats. Let us know what you need and we will buy for you and you can reimburse us on arrival please. Owner lives in separate adjacent house. Available to help if necessary - also to keep garden in shape.
Cleaning:
On departure from your holiday, the gite must be left in the same condition as it was handed over to you. Food should be removed from fridge/freezer etc and the property cleaned and hoovered, with oven, dishwasher and washing machine all left clean and empty. Bathrooms should be left clean and tidy. Bedding to be left on the beds and towels in the bathrooms please.

All rubbish should be removed and placed in the bins on the roadside outside our gate and all recycling should be taken to the recycling point 200 metres up the road.

Should the gite not be left as found, a cleaning charge of £40 will be levied and taken from the security deposit

Clients to take out their own travel insurance policy giving full personal liability cover for all members of the party.(under French law this is not covered by the property owners insurance)

Booking Notes:
25% of total cost payable as non-refundable deposit to secure booking.

Balance to be received 6 weeks before holiday starts. A security deposit of £150 is payable with the 25% deposit to secure the booking and is returned to you, less any breakages or damage fees after you have returned from your holiday and we have had a chance to inspect the property.

Whilst viewing potential properties to buy over a number of years, we were struck by the poor accommodation offered by many of the holiday cottages/gites. We looked at providing holiday accommodation that we would be happy to stay in ourselves and this has resulted in two gites of a very high quality and standard. We have had many guests that return year after year. Most tend to book within a week or two of leaving us!

  • Notes on accommodation: Located in the Southern Vendee & well placed for all amenities. The fabulous Mervent forest and the superb sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are within easy reach. The world-renowned Puy du Fou leisure park and amazing Son et Lumiere is close and highly recommended. There are many rivers and lakes in the area, which boast good fishing, walking, boating and cycling. The Marais Poitevin with its miles of interlocking canals and waterways is a great place to visit. For those of you with a love of architecture and good shopping, visit the city of La Rochelle. Fontenay La Comte, the town market and the chateau are all well worth a visit. There are golf courses in close proximity offering challenges for the novice and seasoned golfer. Alternatively take the various gourmet wine tours in nearby Mareuil Sur Lay and appreciate the diverse gastronomy the region has to offer. The owners are on hand with with advice on where to go and what to do, so please ask! These are No Smoking properties Outside: Both "La Treille" & "Old Garlands" benefit from the large, well maintained and secluded gardens. There is a large patio in front of each gite for exclusive use, perfect for sitting and relaxing, al fresco eating, barbecue etc. (There is a barbecue available for use) There is a 10m x 5m salt-water swimming pool, a hard tennis court and plenty of room for children to play. We have 2 lovely labradors who are extremely friendly, always a huge favourite with children of all ages (even the grown up ones!!)
