About Maggie Mayes

I retired in October 2013 & moved here from Portsmouth with my husband for a complete change of lifestyle.

Maggie Mayes purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Maggie Mayes chose West Devon

Having had some great holidays in Devon we decided that this was the place to come for retirement & we moved here in October 2013. The cottage is in the perfect place for us, nestled in the Dartmoor countryside, in a small friendly village, with amazing views and walks all around yet within easy reach of the coast, shopping, theatres etc.

What makes this cottage unique

We are keen walkers & love the peace, tranquillity and beauty of Dartmoor in all seasons. We have been here over a year now and can tell where to find the best walks & places to eat. We can definitely recommend the Tradesmans Arms in the village where you will find a warm welcome & very good food. The pub & the village hall frequently hold events such as jazz bands and quiz nights & the farm provides milk & clotted cream.

Great little cottage

  • 4 of 5

A lovely rural village and the cottage is just two mins from the local pub, where there is good food and entertainment. The cottage had everything you could want, but not in a good area for the Internet and phone signal. A great place for relaxing or touring.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage and in this friendly village Cathy. We are pleased to say that high speed broadband has finally arrived in Scoriton and in fact we are having it installed this week so there should be no more problems with the Internet in future! There is limited mobile phone reception here. I can get an O2 signal but a trip up the lane or to the pub would be needed for other networks.

Perfect retreat in wonderful village

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for four weeks at Wisteria Cottage as I was studying on a Cookery course at nearby Ashburton. The cottage was within easy commuting distance from Ashburton and I passed Buckfast Abbey every day on my commute- how cool is that?

The cottage was perfect for me. It was warm, cosy, well equipped and a peaceful haven after a hectic day's cooking. The village is picturesque and very well placed on the edge of the moors. I went walking in the evenings and at weekends and visited the welcoming pub on a few occasions.

The owners Dave and Maggie were the perfect hosts. They were welcoming and always there if I needed them but respectful of my privacy. They even ate my food! Dylan the dog deserves special mention for doggy friendliness.

Ashburton is a wonderful foodie town and I enjoyed visiting Totnes and Buckfastleigh when not cooking.

I can highly recommend the cottage and I am tempted to come back- this time for a proper holiday!

Lovely cottage, very clean, all necessary equipment, fantastic bed

  • 5 of 5

Maggie and Dave are a very pleasant couple, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, but if you prefer privacy they're happy to leave you to yourself.

The cottage is situated in a lovely peaceful spot with moors around, great pub (foodwise, we're not drinkers) and a small dairy farm (the kind where cows actually graze in the meadows) next door. There are some wonderful walks starting right from the doorstep, what more can you wish for?

We stayed for a week with three young kids and it was spacious enough for all of us.

Overall we enjoyed our holiday immensely and would thoroughly recommend both the owners and the property.

A fantastic place to re-charge batteries

  • 5 of 5

Wow. What a fantastic week we had over New Year at Wisteria Cottage in Scorriton. Completely spotless cottage, two exceptionally helpful owners in Maggie and Dave, always happy to give local area advice and brilliant walking route suggestions. We were even met with a tasty cream tea on arrival!

The bed was superbly comfortable, the shower powerful and hot and the kitchen had everything you could possibly need to cook a nice dinner.

Don't expect to get great mobile reception, although there is a great wi-fi to connect to and we actually enjoyed being able to escape to the beautiful surroundings and not be constantly glued to our phones!

A brilliant place to go and re-charge your batteries, we had horrible weather so weren't able to get out walking much, but there were plenty of brilliant indoor attractions nearby - we had great fun on the South Devon railway and at the Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary! And plus the rain added to the cosiness of the cottage for quiet nights in.

Very much hoping to come back in the summer and experience much more of the beautiful surroundings in some better weather, but for now, we had a brilliant stay at Wisteria Cottage and are gutted to now be back at work!

Many thanks to Maggie and Dave,

Tom & Sara x

Sorry To Be Negative

  • 3 of 5

Photos don't tell the whole truth. We were disappointed to find that the cottage sits on a rough track with a row of terraced houses immediately opposite. Front view was of a Wheelie Bin and storage shed. Large bedroom, super bed but upstairs rather cramped. We'd be concerned for anyone who sat on a chair at the top of the stairs - definitely a safety issue. The owners were charming and very helpful and coped kindly with our dogs. We had everything we could need and it was very clean. We had a good meal at The Tradesman's Arms. The staff were friendly and allowed our dogs to sit under the table. I would suggest the cottage is suitable for 2 adults and is a good base for walks and visits to many places of interest.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. We take all of our guests comments very seriously and in order to give a true picture of the outside of Wisteria Cottage we have added a photo of the view along Rosemary Lane. We actually find the row of quaint stone cottages opposite us rather charming. These cottages are after all people's homes and wheelie bins and wood stores have to go somewhere. There are fine views from the rear of Wisteria Cottage over the garden, which is fully accessible to guests, and also from the garden over the hills. We appreciate that the living room upstairs may have been a little cramped as you had two large dogs with you. We will stick to our one small to medium dog policy in future. Otherwise, we think that the high vaulted ceiling gives the living room a spacious and airy feel. We consider cleanliness and safety to be a priority. Although none of our previous guests have found it to be an issue we have now removed the chair which was near the top of the stairs. We are pleased that you enjoyed The Tradesmans Arms pub in the village and the surrounding area, both of which make Wisteria Cottage an ideal place for a holiday or relaxing break.
