About the property

Pet friendly Clares Cottage and Dolly's Barn although different in style have both been furnished to give a very cosy feel to make you feel right at home with that country 'must have' of a wood-burning stove for Winter nights in. Clare's has a traditional cottage garden filled with flowers & perfect for sitting out and relaxing and also has the convenience of an outside tap for muddy boots or paws. Dolly is sited in its grounds next to a wildflower meadow and wildlife pond. The views from both properties are just lovely and facing west give some wonderful sunsets. Being only 3 miles from the popular border town of Chepstow its position is ideal to explore Monmouthshire, Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and Brecon Beacons National Park. 3 local pubs two of which serve food and allow dogs inside. For a different cultural experience, Cardiff, Bristol and Gloucester can be easily reached within 40 minutes.

About Helen Kenneally

Hi Everyone. I have lived near Chepstow for the past 30 years and the beauty of the countryside around still takes my breath away. I am a keen walker and one of the organisers of Chepstow Walking Festival which takes place in April.

My enthusiasm for the area including the Brecon Beacons for which I am an Ambassador rubs off onto visitors. I love my dog and am always pleased to meet owners pets and the owners of course!. A vast array of breeds have visited over the last couple of years.

I respect peoples privacy but am always willing to give a few suggestions if asked or have a chat over a cup of tea or something stronger.

Other interests include gardening, wildlife, (in a fashion) skiing and meeting people, who wouldn't in this business.

Why Helen Kenneally chose Chepstow

Monmouthshire is one of Wales secrets. It is just stunning.

A small County as the crow flies it is approx 15 miles wide and 24 miles in length and incorporates the beautiful Wye Valley a Designated Area of Outstanding Beauty and part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Being a border town it is rich in history and it is thought there are more castles here per square mile than anywhere else in Europe! The renowned Forest of Dean is our neighbour. The area has everything for those that enjoy the outdoors, walking, canoeing, cycling, golfing even diving.

Monmouthshire is also the food capital of Wales, plenty of celebrity chefs and two restaurants boasting Michelin stars. Farm shops and markets all sell award winning produce.

What makes this cottage unique

One of the advantages of the location of Clares Cottage is that it so near (only 5 miles from the motorway network) but so far away from the hustle and bustle. There are no major cities in the County so you don't end up wasting time by sitting in traffic jams.

Visitors who enjoy gardens will love Clares Cottage. You could describe it as a cottage garden. Totally organic and filled with flowers and shrubs with an abundance of wildlife. Swallows visit every year and Jacdaws nest in my chimneys. A couple of bats come out at dusk and in 2013 Barn owls nested in the paddock which is being restored to a wild flower meadow. Sadly my bees were lost but hopefully will start again in 2014.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Chloe - If you need to get away from your busy life to a lovely relaxing place then this is the place to go! Helen made us feel very welcome from day one. The views from the cottages are stunning - looking straight out to the fields below your bedrooms you find cows looking right at you! Friendly chickens everyday in garden.

There's lovely dog walking all around you and pubs to eat out. Tintern Abby is a must! I can assure you this will make you want to come back again and again! Stayed at Clares cottage for 3 nights at the end of august we wished we could of stayed forever! The cottage is beautiful a lot bigger than we thought it would be and very well equipped. The garden was amazing very secure if you have dogs or children. The views from cottage wherever you stand, inside or outside are just breathtaking. We will definitely be back and will stay longer next time. Helen is one of the most welcoming hosts we have ever met, well done Helen you have a little gem

Lovely cottage, fantastic garden, great location!

  • 5 of 5

We picked Clare's cottage for the location but the place exceeded our expectations. Comfortable beds, nicely furnished plus everything we needed (including an electric whisk!) and everything worked !! The garden is gorgeous, beautifully kept, but super for the dog. We loved sitting on the terrace watching the wagtails and house martins swooping low over head. Helen was very welcoming, too.

And the location came up to expectations, Tintern Abbey, Chepstow with its Heritage Trail, Cardiff Bay, Newport, Monmouth, Abergavenny Castle, Usk Rural Life Museum, Trelleck, Symonds Yat - all within an hour's drive.

Thanks, Helen - we'll be back !!

Well located, great holiday

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful cottage with great views. It is well located for walks in the scenic countryside. The cottage has lots of information on different routes you can do in and around the Wye Valley area. The owner is very nice and helpful in answering any questions.

Would definitely stay again.

All mod cons in a quaint idyllic package

  • 5 of 5

Brilliant cottage and great location. The garden is awesome and the views almost too perfect to be true. Really handy for a host of things to do and places to visit. Abergavenny is a mus, as is Big Pit. My 5 year lad adored the owners dog. A real pet and great with kids. Hope to get back sometime next year.

Relaxing and 100% dog friendly

  • 5 of 5

With two large Greyhounds in tow it's always a risk looking for somewhere new to stay. The amazing, huge dog friendly garden was what we went for and we weren't disappointed. We hardly had to take them out for a walk as they just enjoyed bombing around the garden or relaxing on the sunny patio. We only had a week at Clare's Cottage, but we'll be back next year for a fortnight. We didn't do much sightseeing but found lots of lovely local walks and facilities close by. Just enjoyed chilling out, watching the birds and squirrels in this beautiful, peaceful environment.

The best holiday cottage in Wales

  • 5 of 5

My family and our three dogs spent our holidays in August this year in Helen Kenneally's holiday cottage.

After a long travel from Germany we had a warm welcome and a very nice time.

My English isn't good enough to say how we enjoyed this beautiful house and this enchanted garden around this. We had a great view to the welsh landscape from the terrace and from the bedroom window. The living room was very cosy and stylishly decorated with antique furniture and paintings.

I think it was the best holiday cottage we ever had.

We would be very happy to come back next year.
