About the property

1-Bedroom Luxury Apartment in Fort Augustus, Scottish Highlands - With Access To All The Abbey's Facilities

This exceptional split-level apartment in the Monastery Tower is truly unique. Beautiful original stone windows offer breathtaking views over Loch Ness. It has a stunning and private location on the top floor of St Benedict’s Abbey, a Victorian monastery that has been converted into luxury apartments. Stylishly decorated throughout, this property makes a wonderful romantic getaway.

Alternatively, it could be used for a party of four utilising the large sofa bed in the main living area.

The property is situated at the top of the grand stone staircase from the historic cloisters walkway. If you look at pictures of the Abbey, in many of them you will see a tall, square tower that stands above the rest of the building – this is where the Monastery Tower apartment is located.

In many of the apartments, and from the Abbey grounds itself, you will get some wonderful views of Loch Ness but the Monastery Tower offers truly unrestricted views over the trees and right across the water.

All of the rooms in the apartment are special but the highlight is probably the open plan living / kitchen area. A series of stunning arch windows work their way around this unique room bringing in much light and providing panoramic views of the loch and mountains.

Entertainment options include a flat screen TV with Freesat, Netflix (provided free to our guests), and bluetooth speakers for your phones and tablets. The fully fitted and well-equipped kitchen area features lovely granite work surfaces and the dining area has an oak dining table and four chairs.

Upstairs, the bedroom features a very comfortable king size bed, with windows overlooking the cloisters and a flat screen TV with an integrated DVD player for those lazy days.

Located next to the bedroom, the bathroom with its original quatrefoil windows and lovely views has a powerful built-in shower over the bath. There is also a second toilet located on the lower floor.

This welcoming apartment provides modern comforts and convenience whilst retaining many of its striking original features.

About Nick and Sarah

Sarah and I moved to Scotland in 2010 after some 15 years in London. At first I continued to commute down south for a few days each week and Sarah worked in Dundee. We now have a young family, I work in Edinburgh and we are both loving the lifestyle up here.

My family are originally from Scotland and we wanted somewhere more relaxing to live and with access to the countryside. It has been a great move for us and we are really well settled in now.

Nick and Sarah purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Nick and Sarah chose Inverness, Loch Ness & Nairn

We bought the Monastery Tower in 2007 for a holiday apartment for ourselves whilst we were living in London. Very quickly the area became very special to us. We got married in Urquhart Castle and had our wedding reception in Fort Augustus.

Loch Ness is probably the most talked about strip of water in the world. "Nessie" may get most of the coverage the loch itself is truly beautiful and, whatever the weather, it is so peaceful looking across it at the hills and mountains.

But it's not all about the loch. The surrounding area is just as charming. There are so many interesting walks, many from the town itself and the sights are amazing.

What makes this apartment unique

St Benedict's Abbey was redeveloped as luxury holiday apartments a few years ago and named the Highland Club. The grounds are lovely, the architecture is stunning and its location is fantastic.

There are a number of facilities in the Abbey itself that guests can enjoy such as snooker (full size table), swimming, croquet, tennis and table tennis. Walking around the grounds is a real pleasure.

All of the apartments in the Highland Club offer something special and they are all so different that there is probably no such thing as the "best" apartment. However, we bought the Monastery Tower as we wanted 360 degree views of the area and, in particular, an unrestricted view of Loch Ness. If it is views that you want, then you really won't find a better choice at the Abbey.

2017 UPDATE - due to renovations, the swimming pool and sauna area in the Highlands Club will be unavailable for use until summer 2017.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just back from our 3 night stay at the Monastery Tower. Accommodation was first class, very unique with amazing views over the Loch. Highland club facilities were second to none. Excellent location for the surrounding areas. Would highly recommend it! - September 2013

Just back from 4 fantastic days in the Monastery tower. Couldn't have been better - wonderful views through every window, lovely apartment, really comfortable and excellently furnished. The whole complex was excellent and we really enjoyed ourselves. - September 2013

We stayed for 5 nights at the top of the Monastery tower. The views over Loch Ness were fantastic, well worth the climb. The amenities both within the apartment (fully equipped kitchen, towels and bedding, television and DVD) and the complex (swimming pool, snooker, table tennis, free Wi-Fi...) were top notch. Fort Augustus itself is a great base for visiting the region. - July 2013

One of a kind location

We loved being in a rural setting, walking into the village, driving into the highlands, the beautiful Loch views from the Abbey. Everything we hoped for.

Beautiful and Unique

  • 5 of 5

Sarah and Nick's place was amazing. In addition to being in the former bell tower of a beautiful monastery (which was unique in itself), it was very comfortable and super cozy. Amazing views of Loch Ness and the grounds of the monastery were very cool. It's also a great launching point for exploring the Scotland Highlands. The apartment was very clean and well maintains. Would definitely stay here again!

Definitely has the 'Wow' factor!

Beautiful property inside and out. It really does have an amazing view of Loch Ness from nearly every window. I think the only downside is the amount of steps to get to the apartment living room- if you're not fit at the start of your stay, you will be by the end of it!!! We had an amazing stay and its well located to visit a wide variety of attractions/ activities or to just have a wander down into Fort Augustus itself with its canal and little shops/ pubs/ loch cruises etc.

Charming apartment with beautiful views of Loch Ness

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with my wife and two young children. Plenty of room for the four of us with the bedroom and sofa bed. Quite a hike up the stairs with luggage, but worth it for the great view! The apartment was comfortable and a great home base for exploring the Highlands of Scotland. Bonus: the kids felt like they were living in a castle! Easy communication with the owners and the on-site hosts were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend!

Charming accommodation

  • 4 of 5

Great apartment with panoramic views over Loch Ness. The view over the mountains while you have a shower is wonderful. Warm, welcome apartment, the monastery having a lovely pool, full sized snooker table, games and its own restaurant down by the lochs edge. Lots of info available, apartment is furnished to a very high standard and fort Augustus is a lovely place.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Inverness at 50 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Bothy and the Lock Inn at 0.2 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Fort Augustus at 1 Kilometres Nearest Train : Spean Bridge at 20 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Boat House at 0.1 Kilometres Nearest Ski : Glen Coe at 50 Kilometres Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

The Abbey is literally on the shore of Loch Ness, probably the most famous strip of water in the world. If Nessie decides to make an appearance, you won't get a better view than from the Monastery Tower.

If you want to get to the sea shore, then the Moray Firth in Inverness (40 minute drive) is a beautiful place to visit - watch out for dolphins! The drive west towards Skye is longer but, with mountains and lochs at almost every turn, you won't be disappointed.

Travel:

The nearest train station is at Spean Bridge (20 minute drive) but there is more service to Inverness and Fort William (both a 40 minute drive). The nearest airport is Inverness where there is a regular service to London and other UK cities.

We would recommend bringing a car as there is so much to see that is beyond the reach of public transport. Inverness and the other major Scottish cities have plenty of car hire options - contact us for details.

Distances:

The centre of Fort Augustus is an easy (and beautiful) 5 minute walk away and there are plenty of choices there for eating out, including two excellent pubs. The Boathouse restaurant in the grounds of the Abbey is also recommended. The nearest major supermarkets are in Fort William and Inverness - stock up on your way here but the smaller supermarkets in Fort Augustus will cater for most things.

Further Details:

The Scottish Highlands are one of the world's most dramatic and beautiful locations and St Benedict's Abbey is itself one of the rein's highlights.

The monastery is built on the site of the original "Fort" Augustus and the old stone walls are still visible. The building dates back to the nineteenth century and has the intricate architecture and stonework you would expect of an ecclesiastical. Staying in the Monastery Tower is more than just having a stunning holiday apartment. You also have full access to the Abbey's grounds and facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna, gym and tennis court. Relax in the Highland Club lounge with its full-size snooker table and library of books or play croquet on the shores of Loch Ness - there is something for everyone.

There is also free wifi in the Highland Club lounge.

Fort Augustus itself is a charming town, split in half by the Caledonian Canal and a series of locks which are opened throughout the day as boats pass through.

As for Loch Ness itself, so much is written about it that it is hard to add much more. However, it is a beautiful loch, stretching over 30 miles and banked on both sides by steep mountains. What really strikes us is how much it changes during the day. You'll need to see the colours for yourself but, whether it is calm or rough, the view is spectacular. Settle down at a dining room table in the apartment and keep an eye out for the monster!

The surrounding area will appeal to walkers, cyclists, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.
