About the property

4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large terrace in a village house overlooking the square

Enjoy the comfort and charm of this 17th century house on the square of a little mediaeval village tucked away on a hillside, with glorious vistas of vineyards all around and the natural beauty of the hillside behind.

On the ground floor when you enter, you find a spacious open plan living dining area with the kitchen well designed for sharing cooking. There is a dishwasher and a microwave.

Lovely old spiral stairs lead from the ground floor to the four comfortable bedrooms on three floors. Two have single beds, two have double beds, There are two bathrooms, one of which has a bathtub.

on the first floor there is a cosy sitting room, with double doors leading onto the terrace. There is a TV here with French and English channels and a DVD player with a selection of DVDs for your use. There is another quite little "salon" on the top floor with a desk and chair and a small sofa, ideal as a quiet retreat.

The village shop, with the best baguettes around and good meat, is next door. Go to nearby markets for fresh local produce , prepare it in the well-equipped kitchen and enjoy your delicious lunch or dinner on the terrace. The terrace is perfect for sun bathing, or just relaxing with a glass of wine and a book. Away from the house, there is something for everyone. Explore the markets of Clermont l'Herault (10mins away) and beautiful historic Pezenas (15mins away), the ancient town of Agde, the mediaeval St Guilhem le Desert. The beaches of the Mediterranean are within easy reach, the lac du Salagou has sailing and windsurfing and the Herault river is great for canoeing. There are tennis courts in the village, golf courses nearby and excellent walking tracks behind the house.

About Vicki Douglas

I am Australian, living in Sydney, but with family scattered all over the world. We all love to get together as often as possible in Peret, to enjoy the peace and beauty of the area.

Vicki Douglas purchased this house in 2004

Why Vicki Douglas chose Beziers area

The location is perfect for the whole family, as it has something for everyone. It's right in the village, with the shop next door, so extremely convenient. The house is big enough for all of us, and we've made the kitchen simple but big enough and well equipped enough for us all to cook together. The area has wonderful walks, and plenty of history for the history buffs, (it's in Cathar country), there's excellent shopping, there are the beaches and the rivers for swimming and canoeing. And it's a great place to relax.

What makes this house unique

The most charming thing about the house is that it has a lovely big terrace for meals - great for breakfast and BBQ's, or just for sunbaking. And we love the ancient spiral staircase winding up through the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful house you have! A haven of rest, so tastefully decorated. Thank you for allowing us to share in your little piece of heaven.

The house was beautiful and we enjoyed it a lot.

Fabulous place

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous house, with a real cooks kitchen which looked small but it was really practical and well equipped.Comfortable living spaces, and bedrooms, beautifully simply decorated, washing machine, and lovely bathrooms..Much more spacious than it looks on the photos. Peaceful beautiful location ( apart from the bells! ).Easy access to Montpellier,a fantastic gorge, and some lovely villages and beaches. The terrace was a lovely place to watch the world go by.A beautiful quirky french property that feels like a home rather than a holiday let.Very well thought out,and well equipped. We had 2 families with us,4 adults and 4 children and we had loads of space.I didnt want to return home.A wonderful place to holiday .Thank you.

A Peaceful Piece of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful location, right on the village square. Met and welcomed into clean and tidy surroundings by the local contact J-R. A most obliging man. The younger members of the party were enthralled by his slightly mysterious ways. Woke each morning to the smell of bread being baked, the bakery/general store is right next door. Took each meal on the spacious and well appointed terrace, a sun trap for most of the day.

In the local area, the market at Clermont l'Herault is well worth a visit as are the nearby cirques for those who like walking. Slightly further afield the Gorges d'Heric, is a stunning place to visit, mountain stream dropping into deep pools ideal for swimming and less crowded than heading for the coast.

Highly recommended!!

Thank You Vicki.

35 minutes by car sees you at sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, like Cap d'Agde. A little closer there is the charming little beach at Meze, ideal for children (have a delicious seafood lunch while you're there!) or swim and sunbathe at La Tamarissiere, near Agde. The Lac du Salagou is ideal for windsurfing. At the Pont du Diable there is a lovely swimming area on the Herault River, which is equally excellent for canoeing.

Airports: Montpellier (EasyJet, Ryanair) 45mins

Beziers (Ryanair ) 30mins

Nimes, Carcassone, Perpignan Ryanair 1 hour

Toulouse, Marseilles British Airways 2 hours

The TGV is 3.5 hours from Paris to Montpellier or Beziers.

A car is recommended. Cars may be hired at the stations or the airports.

The nearest town, at 10 mins away, is Clermont L'Herault. Beautiful Renaissance Pezenas, with its gorgeous architecture, historical walks, restaurants and artisan shops is 15 mins away. There is an excellent small Art Gallery at Lodeve, 15 mins north. Carcassone and its Cathar history is 1 hour, and the fascinating mediaeval pilgrimage town of St Guilhem le Desert is 35 mins away. The beautiful university city of Montpellier is 40 minutes.

Further Details:

Clermont l'Herault has a HyperU, Intermarche and Lidl supermarkets, banks, pharmacists, medical clinics, etc. Pezenas has Lidl and Carrefour. For fashion shopping Montpellier and Beziers have a big range of choices. For pottery lovers, St Jean de Fos is a centre for all types of pottery, and Pezenas has many artisans of jewellery, and crafts. Peret is in the centre of a wine growing area, so wine is everywhere. Start exploring with the small domains at the nearby villages of Cabrieres - 5 minutes away and Adissan 7mins away, to taste the very local wines, then progress to the beautiful 12th Century Abbaye de Valmagne to try their AOC wines and have a guided our of the Abbey. The small heritage listed village of Villeneuvette, 3.5 km away, originally set up under Louis XIV to manufacture cloth, is a delightful centre for arts and crafts with an excellent restaurant. For hikers the area has brilliant walks and for explorers attractions such as the underground world of the Grotte de Clamouse, 30mins away near St Guilhem le Desert, or the wild and steep landscape of the Gorges de L'Herault and the Pont du Diable. Further afield at Arles, (1hr 30mins) where the Roman amphitheatre is used for bullfights and concerts you can follow a trail that takes you to the sites of Van Gogh's paintings. Nimes also (1hr 20mins) has a Roman amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the world.

In addition, thre are the must do's of a trip on the Canal du Midi on the Millesime from Agde. Or a day canoeing down the L'Herault river. Stop for a picnic on the side of the river on the way. So much fun!
