Cottage in Langton Matravers, Nr. Swanage, Dorset, England - Peaceful location 15 minutes walk to Dancing Ledge and the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site

The cottage at 5 North Street was originally built in the middle of the 19th century by quarrymen from the local quarries using Purbeck stone. Used as a holiday home for several decades by previous owners, it has been modernised and updated by the present owners while retaining many of its original features. It has been available as a self-catering holiday let since 2003, and is very popular with guests, many of whom return on an annual basis. Prices quoted are for weekly rentals. The cottage is also let for shorter periods from October to April - please contact the owner direct for prices and availability. Maximum occupancy is four adults and two children under the age of sixteen.

The village of Langton Matravers is within a conservation area and much of the surrounding countryside is classified as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village is within walking distance of Dancing Ledge one of the features of the Dorset & East Devon Coast, England's first natural site to receive World Heritage Status. The cottage has been refurbished to a high standard and provides a comfortable, relaxing holiday home. An electric immersion heater heats the water and central heating is provided by night storage heaters.

The accommodation comprises:

Ground Floor: Sitting room with colour TV, DVD and CD player; separate dining room; fitted kitchen with electric cooker, fridge/freezer and microwave oven; utility lobby with automatic top loading washing machine; bathroom and WC comprising bath with electric shower, wash basin, WC and heated towel rail.

First Floor: Main bedroom with 5ft wide double bed/wardrobe cupboard/chest of drawers (views of the Purbeck Hills and Swanage bay); bedroom 2 with 4ft 6” wide double bed; wardrobe; bedside chest of drawers.

Second Floor: Bedroom 3 with 4ft 6” wide double bed; wardrobe; chest of drawers (views of the Purbeck Hills and Swanage bay).

There is also a sunny walled patio garden to the rear of the cottage with table and chairs. To the front there is off-street private parking for one large family car and a garden. There is unrestricted parking in the High Street for additional cars.

We bought 5 North Street in 1995 after several enjoyable holidays in a friend's adjacent cottage. We renovated and furnished the cottage solely for our own use and only started letting it out in 2003 having been fortunate enough to purchase number six! We love the Isle of Purbeck - it's a unique unspoilt corner of England. In addition to the beaches, scenery and walks, the Isle of Purbeck has a lovely golf course with views over Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island. It's difficult to imagine a more perfect location for a holiday home in the UK, yet only a relatively short drive from London.

Beautiful cosy cottage

The cottage is in a quiet lane with parking for one car outside but more parking on the main rd, the cottage is decorated in character for the style of cottage cosy and beautifully clean, it is deceptively big with a lovely modern kitchen and bathroom on the back, the bedrooms are roomy and freshly decorated with comfortable beds, there are lots of original features which is delightful.

This is a perfect spot for leaving the car at home walking the coast path with beautiful views of this beautiful part of the world, the shop and pub is a short walk down the hill.We had a beautiful break and hope to return.

Activity and Interests


The nearest beach at Swanage is 5 minutes by car. It is ideal for families, having a long sandy beach, Punch & Judy and a small adjacent amusement park. Studland Bay, which has one of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the UK, is 15 minutes by car and has free parking for National Trust members. Dancing Ledge, a local landmark on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, is approximately 15 minutes walk from the cottage.


Langton Matravers is a few miles West of Poole harbour, about a mile inland from the coast on the Isle of Purbeck. The seaside town of Swanage is about 5 minutes away by car. It has two supermarkets, numerous restaurants and shops, as well as an excellent child friendly beach. Sandbanks, Poole and Bournemouth are all accessible by car or bus via the Chain Ferry at Studland. The ferry runs every 20 minutes throughout the day.

Booking Notes:
Our standard changeover day is Saturday. Departure is by 10 am and arrival is from 3pm. A 25% deposit is taken at the time of booking and the balance is payable six weeks before arrival. Pets are not accepted. In low season, depending on availability, bookings may be taken for less than a week subject to a minimum charge of 2/3 of the weekly rental.

A deposit of 25% is required to confirm a booking. The balance is payable six weeks before the rental starts.

  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.

  • Outside: There is a small sunny walled patio garden to the rear of the cottage and private off road parking immediately in the front of the cottage suitable for a large car. Utility Room: Lobby between the kitchen and bathroom with automatic top loading washing machine. There is a coat rail in the cupboard under the stairs where the vacuum cleaner, travel cot and high chair are stored. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen is provided and the linen changed on a weekly basis. The cottage is cleaned between tenancies. Towels are provided at a small supplement depending on the number of occupants.
