Situated just over the ancient twin-spanned bridge in the centre of Grange in Borrowdale. How Cottage is a traditional whitewashed stone cottage overlooking the green just past Grange Bridge Tea Rooms and next to Grange Cafe. The village of Grange dates back to the establishment of Home Farm in 1209 by the monks of Furness Abbey. How cottage forms the middle cottage of a row of 3 formerly occupied by a barn. The thickness of the stone walls are testament to its history.

Grange lies just south of Derwentwater and is reached along Borrowdale Road from out of Keswick and passing alongside the Lake and south of the famous Lodore Falls. This is mountain country of stunning scenery; to the south there is Great Gable, Green Gable, Glaramara and Scafell. The front of the cottage looks out over Grange Fell whilst the rear has stunning views to Maiden Moor and beyond to Cat Bells. After the day's exertions, there is a restaurant at the Borrrowdale Gates or at the Scafell Hotel, Rosthwaite.

Lovely cottage in absolutely gorgeous setting.

Clean, well stocked cottage with amazing views. Tastefully decorated. The only need was somewhere to dry wet clothes when weather not so good - but a very minor point!

Perfect to explore the surrounding area which is just wonderful. Lots of super walks right from the doorstep - loved Catbells, Castle Crag, King's How to name a few and the walk around the lake was good too (though did get a bit lost at one point!). Such a wealth of bird.ife and flora to enjoy as well. Keswick is very near and the museum there and the Puzzling place are superb if there is a bad weather day. If you want to eat out in Keswick, would book in advance in summer months.

Wonderful!!

We shared this lovely cottage with other members of our family for a week in July. It is a warm, very comfortable and well-equipped cottage in a stunning location. It had everything we needed and was more spacious than we expected. The property was very clean and well- maintained and the beds very comfortable. The setting is idyllic and our grandchildren enjoyed playing in the river nearby which was very safe. There is a tearoom only yards from the back door and another close by at the front. Two lovely stone humpbacked bridges bring you into Grange and Keswick is only a short journey in one direction with lots of great restaurants and things to do,and in the other direction one of the most beautiful drives( or walks/cycles for the more energetic)

We all loved staying in this beautiful cottage and would highly recommend it. Our grandson tried to persuade his mum and dad to sell their house and buy How Cottage so that says it all

Travel:

Travelling to Grange by car makes life easy as you can come and go as you please. Once here, you can enjoy a car free experience should you wish. Alternatively, there is a regular bus service to Keswick that loops around Derwentwater. Another service takes the longer route over Honister Pass and past Buttermere. The nearest railway station is at Windermere and from there you could catch a bus to Keswick or take a taxi.

Distances:

The nearest market town is Keswick which is a 10 minutes drive. Or why not take the Derwentwater Launch which may be picked up near Lodore or across the other side of the Lake by walking through Low Manesty Woods at High Brandelhow. Heading further south along the Borrowdale valley leads to the hamlets of Rosthwaite and Seatoller. It's a lovely drive but walking along the Allerdale Ramble and returning along the Cumbria Way (or vice versa) makes for a nice round robin trip of 7 miles.

Further Details:

Grange Cafe stocks some basic provisions as does The Flock-In in Rosthwaite (both are tea rooms), otherwise a visit to Keswick beckons for major shopping. As the market town of the North Lakes, Keswick offers an unsurpassed range of outdoor shops and pubs. For culture, visit the Theatre by the Lake or enjoy the many festivals throughout the year, including jazz, film, beer and mountain to name several. On a wet day, try the indoor climbing wall in Keswick or Ambleside. For experienced rock climbers, what better base than Grange to follow in the footsteps of the early pioneers - the Abraham brothers, who owned the photographic shop in Keswick (now George Fisher's). Shepherd's Crag is arguably the best known crag in the Lakes, comprising Little Chamonix and Gate Gill. For gentle rambling, walk to Watendlath and take in the southern part of Derwentwater then go behind the Lodore Hotel and walk up through Lodore Wood following Watendlath Beck to Watendlath Farm for tea. Then continue south west over the fells to Rosthwaite before picking up the Allerdale Ramble for the return to Grange. Or if you wish you can drive to Watendlath taking in the delights of the famous Ashness Bridge and Surprise view. The Upper Lodore Falls are worth visiting by walking to the right after reaching the second wood beyond Ashness Bridge. Cat Bells may be reached by any number of starting points. Many start from Portinscale but it may be reached from Grange by walking to Manesty and then approaching the open side of Cat Bells with Skiddaw and Saddleback in the background. Alternatively pass the Waterworks in Grange and ascend to the pinnacle between Maiden Moor and High Spy, turning right to Cat Bells.

Within a short walking distance of Grange Bridge, the Bowder Stone is worth visiting. This is a glacial boulder found in the woods below Gate Crag.

No visit to Borrowdale is complete without visiting the Honister Slate Mine and going on the zip wire!

  • Notes on accommodation: Changeover is usually on a Friday but may be varied depending on other bookings. Arrival is after 5pm and departure by 11 am. Normally in peak season the length of a stay is usually at least one week. However, depending on availability out of peak season, short breaks may be available so just email for details and prices. How cottage is strictly a no smoking property and no dogs or other pets are permitted. Outside: In front of the cottage is a patio garden enjoying stunning views of the village and the Fells. It is a lovely sun trap capturing the morning and early afternoon sun. Sitting in the garden, what better way to relax and recharge your batteries before embarking on the next walk, climb, run or cycle tour as the mood takes you. Utility Room: This is on the ground floor underneath the stairs and houses an ironing board/iron, vacuum cleaner, brushes, mops and cleaning materials. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedding is provided. We have a cleaner who will replenish basic stock and clean following your stay. Please do however bring your own hand and bath towels.
