About Shona Wisedale

I left a stressful job as a maths teacher at an academy in Gloucestershire to pursue our dream of a new life in a new country. When we fell in love with La Baronnie we knew the cottage would be perfect for a gite. We hope you love being here as much as we do!

We live on site, keep a low profile but are available if required. Equally, if you wish to be private on your holiday, that's fine too, we won't be offended!

Shona Wisedale purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Shona Wisedale chose Castels

The Dordogne area is just gorgeous with a wealth of history, places to visit and a wonderful climate. We viewed over 30 properties before choosing La Baronnie. Our sunny, south-facing location amongst wooded hills with rocky outcrops is idyllic, with spectacular chateau forts and honey-coloured medieval towns and villages nearby, who could want for more? We love the house and its views, its warm-coloured stone, traditional french windows, shutters and pigeonnier tower, its quirky layout and character, numerous patios, woodland, pool with a view and traditional French cattle-stalls in the gîte.

What makes this apartment unique

On the south-facing slope of the Dordogne valley, our property benefits from its sunny position, providing a real rural feel yet just minutes from the major tourist sites of the Perigord Noir including the medieval town of Sarlat and the castles of Beynac and Castelnaud and the Chateau des Milandes. Our pretty nearby town of St Cyprien has a vibrant and busy market every Sunday along with a Carrefour supermarket for all of your essential provisions. Our swimming pool area offers wonderful views of the Dordogne valley whilst being private and not overlooked. The Dordogne river, with canoe rental, river beaches and hot-air balloon rides is just minutes away. The nearby Vézère river offers several prehistoric sites around the small town of Les Eyzies. Several excellent restaurants are nearby.

Lovely Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at petite Baronnie, we had beautiful views of the Dordogne, & in the early mornings before the mist lifted it was lovely to sit outside with an early morning coffee and have our breakfast. It was perfectly placed for our cycling trips which we did most days & then in the late afternoon we retired to have some relaxation & a swim in the very welcoming & well kept pool. Our hosts were very kind and attended to our every need from welcome drinks upon arrival to ensuring we were comfortable & had enough towels etc. There are no negative words to say only positive & we would have no problem recommending to friends & family. Lovely Lovely place.

Geschmackvolles Quartier + tolle Gastgeber

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to essential provisions & welcome drinks provided by the owners. Shona & Steve were very friendly & offered lots of advice about the local area. The apartment was well equipped, clean & tidy. It is in a perfect location to explore the local area from. The pool was great with lovely views. The week exceeded our expectations on all counts!

Charming 2 bed apartment in heart of the Dordogne.

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was well furnished, clean tidy and we felt at home straight away. When we arrived it was lovely to see a few basics milk, eggs, butter and bread provided by the owners.

The apartment looked lovely in the photos still far succeeded our expectations - in terms of setting and charm. Beautiful well stocked gardens and delightful walled garden with shrubs in balcony style pool area.

Steve and Shona were welcoming and we were invited to meet other guests from the Gite during the first evening and they recommended things to see and do during our stay.

The apartment is well situated an hour and a bit from Bergerac and 10 minutes drive from St Cyprien small market town with evening Gourmet market and weekend markets. To the East is medieval town of Beynac with absolutely stunning views of the Dordogne river meandering its way through the valley is 10 minutes away and 20 minutes further is bustling medieval town of Sarlat.

The kids loved the pool and we were able to relax in the sun loungers on the pool terrace. We went out nearly every day as there are so many medieval towns and attractions nearby. We particularly enjoyed the Gourmet market at Sarlat, canoeing in the Dordogne river which was a gently meandering river but fairly shallow in parts so one felt safe with the children, the views from Beynac medieval castle and our favourite was the nearby chateau at Milandes which was owned by Josephine Baker black American dancer in the 1920s Jazz age, activist and French resistance fighter who made her home there in the 1920s. We had some delicious meals as the French cuisine is one of the best and the local wines are exceptionally good. It's got to be one of the best holidays we have had and I would definitely recommended it to family and friends.

Owner's Response: Thanks Lisa for a very comprehensive and interesting review. You have summed up what is so magical about this area! The children were at a perfect age to enjoy the pool as well as the chateaux and canoeing. The gourmand marchés are wonderful in the summer. We like to try different ones as each town has a weekly evening. We hope that you will come back again and see us!

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

Nestled in the hillside La Petite Baronnie is a little piece of heaven on earth. This is our fourth year of visiting and it just gets better and better. Hosts Shona and Steve have thought of everything. We have had the pleasure of staying in the apartment and the gite and both are very well appointed. On the night of our arrival we enjoyed a splendid meal prepared by Steve and Shona. We felt very pampered as we relaxed around the dinner table with the other guests.

We highly recommend La Petite Baronnie as a marvellous base for anyone wishing to enjoy the delights of the Dordogne Valley. You won't be disappointed!

Lovely Apartment in Idyllic Setting

  • 5 of 5

I booked this accommodation because it looked perfect for our needs, but it turned out to be even better than I was expecting - firstly in terms of size, which was much more generous than the photographs indicated, and secondly in being wonderfully cool on even the hottest days, so my worries about getting enough sleep were unfounded.

The rooms were comfortable and spotlessly clean, with a well-equipped kitchen and a charming little terrace for al fresco evening meals.

The pool area was beautifully maintained, with plenty of shade and the most comfortable loungers I've ever experienced. Water temperature was just right, and there was a selection of inflatables and toys etc. for the children - my younger daughter swam and played down there for a couple of hours every day.

The location is excellent, close to numerous local attractions (Chateau des Milandes, canoeing on the Dordogne, the pre-historic caves in the Vezere valley, to name just a few) and a couple of km from the pretty market village of St Cyprien (and a decent-sized supermarket).

Shona and Steve were excellent hosts, welcoming us with cocktails, and available to offer help and advice (and DVDs) whenever needed.

We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Thank you Clare for your kind words and comments on your first gîte holiday. We are glad that it surpassed your expectations in all ways. It can be tricky to take photographs that do the apartment justice. We are so pleased that your daughters enjoyed the pool as much. Being heated makes it an altogether nicer experience. We chose this location as your have so many interesting places, villages, chateaux and caves right on your doorstep. Saint Cyprien is handy too for shops, cafés and restaurants. Thank you again for your wonderful review. We hope to see you all again here next summer!
