Overview

About the property

In Beautiful Countryside Ideal For Walking, Biking, Kayaking & Fishing near famous market town St Antonin Noble Val

A picturesque traditional French farmhouse in a small hamlet with secluded garden set in glorious countryside. The house is at the end of the lane which then turns into a grass track through fields and copses so no traffic. Perfect for those searching a peaceful rural retreat but with plenty of nearby attractions within a short drive. It is also only a few minutes drive from a village with a boulangerie and general store and 15 minutes from a large supermarket.

The kitchen is spacious with seating for 8, fully equipped and leads into the lounge with large comfortable sofas and log burner. Stairs lead up to two spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Downstairs is a third bathroom and two more bedrooms each with French windows giving direct access to the garden and pool.

The garden is totally private but has great views over the surrounding countryside. Climbing roses cover the walls of the house and within the garden is a small orchard with cherry, plum and fig tree, several shady spots and hideaways as well as a gravelled parking area and a separate area where you can play pétanque or table tennis.

Roman steps lead into the heated private 9mx4m salt-water pool which is of uniform depth and is equipped with an alarm. There are 6 sun-loungers for sun-bathing round the pool. There is also a raised terrace overlooking the pool with a large table with seating for 8, parasols and a built-in BBQ.

And if you don't feel like cooking in the evening, you can take a 15 minute walk through country lanes to a nearby auberge and have a delicious meal made with local products. Then stroll back as the sun sets, light the pool for a final dip or just lie back on one of our loungers and watch the stars drift by in a clear night sky.

About Shelby Matthews

We have lived in a city for most of our lives but have always yearned for a secluded peaceful place in the countryside where we could take the family, as far away as possible from traffic and the hassle it entails.

What we wanted was somewhere close to interesting places to visit, good local produce and markets and a range of sporting activities for all the family. But we also wanted somewhere where we could find plenty to enjoy just staying at home for the day.

We finally found the house which fulfils all those criteria and more. No cars pass our house except those of the local farmer. Yet there are scores of things to do within a short drive.

Shelby Matthews purchased this farmhouse in 2013

Why Shelby Matthews chose Tarn-et-Garonne

The house is in the beautiful Tarn-et-Garonne area of south west France. It benefits from a near Mediterranean climate and whether it's walking or biking through the lush green countryside, ambling through medieval villages, visiting the many bustling farmers' markets, fishing or canoeing through rapids, you will not be at a loss for something to do. The area is well-known for its gastronomic specialities such as truffles, duck and goose delicacies, mushrooms, white garlic, Reine-Claude plums, Quercy melons, Moissac cherries, saffron and chestnuts. You can also visit local producers by foot from our house - see the Gascon pigs lazing in the woods or watch the goats being milked to make Rocamadour cheese.

The lovely medieval towns of Villefranche-de-Rouergue (22km) & St Antonin Noble Val (24km) both have large markets which rival any in France. There are also several beautiful hilltop towns nearby: Najac (20 km), St Cirq-LaPopie (27km) & Cordes sur Ciel (40km) as well as the famous capital of the Tarn - Albi (64km).

A magical house in a magical location.

  • 5 of 5

This house really gives the wow factor and we had the most amazing stay- we really didn't want to leave. The house and garden provides a wonderful and relaxing place to stay and is ideal for family or friends travelling in a group. It's also a great location as a useful base to visit many beautiful medieval towns! Would highly recommend this to anyone!

Superbly appointed rural farmhouse full of rustic charm … perfection!

  • 5 of 5

This is an outstanding property that offered everything that we could possibly hope for … beautiful tranquil location, superb garden/bbq area, petanque (do make sure you play it, it’s great fun!), table tennis, excellent clean and well maintained pool with good quality loungers, various trails from the property that we enjoyed with our dog, very comfortable beds, plus modern conveniences such as sky tv and wi-fi. Even pool towels are provided. A great base to visit the many charming towns and villages in the surrounding area such as St. Antonin-Noble-Val, St Cirq-Lapopie, Belcastel (near Rodez), Bruniquel, Puycelci. We booked 15 months in advance to make sure we secured such a lovely place and, despite having high expectations, were very pleased to find even these were exceeded.

Excellent communications from the owner, Shelby, who was extremely helpful and clearly cares about her guests. The welcome manual is full of helpful recommendations and information. Caretakers are lovely too – and offered to do the change of bedding a day early during our 2 week stay to suit our needs.

Thank you Shelby for a most memorable and wonderful holiday.

Cleaning is rudimentary and maintenance is basic.

  • 2 of 5

First impressions were very high. It's set in a beautiful part of the country, fairly remote and exceptionally quiet and peaceful. From outside the property looks like the perfect rustic farmhouse. Pool area appears quite lovely, with a wonderful view out over fields. On entering via the kitchen initial impression was a little dreary, dark with a slight musty smell. There are two bedrooms downstairs which seem quite bright and fairly roomy but the main surprise was the bathroom facility for these two rooms. You have to go through the sitting room, kitchen & the utility room to find it. Once there, complete disappointment. It is tiny, a toilet, a sink and a very small and cramped shower. Not a good start at all. Upstairs are two bedrooms which are fairly pleasant each with a velux window and another small window, leading into the bathrooms. Our room had a shower, toilet and sink. Room enough for only one person at a time, somewhat smelly, sorry to say, somewhere you don't want to take your flip-flops off. All a little in need of a complete revamp. Rather tired and completely underwhelming. The other room had a small bath with shower. Unfortunately, no chance of wanting a bath. This bathroom had a really bad odour for the entire course of our stay. The caretakers did come in to try and sort it out but with not much success. I feel this gite needs a little tender care and some updating. I think it's catering for too many people. Ideal for a family. The downstairs bedrooms, although doubles, are totally impractical because of the distance to washing facilities and the fact you have to pass several room to reach it. Perfect for children in my opinion. Pool area is a little shabby, decking is lifting in areas and paving slabs around the pool are loose. Reclining seats are past their best, two of which collapsed during our stay and were not replaced by the time we left. Barbecue does not cater for a larger party, really only suitable for two/four. I feel this place is somewhat 'rustic' in the extreme, bordering on tired and in need of some tlc.

My general view is that just enough is done here to facilitate letting. Cleaning is rudimentary and maintenance is basic. The owner was very pleasant when issues were brought to her attention but no effective action was taken.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments but I am very puzzled since the reactions of all our other visitors, both before and after your visit (up to the end of July 2017), have found the property very well-maintained, very well equipped and spotless, as clearly indicated in the 21 five-star reviews we have received, out of a total of 22. As a recent guest said to me on leaving: "we have left the property in the state we found it, that is to say impeccable". In fact, since we only bought the property some 4 years ago most of the equipment is new. We have also converted to a salt water pool and installed pool heating this year. Traditional houses in rural France have thick stone walls and shutters to ensure a cool interior during summer months so inevitably seem dark when you first enter. I am very sorry that you had trouble with two of the six sunbeds. Unfortunately these were damaged just before your arrival and the caretaker thought he had repaired them adequately but we bought two new ones as soon as we heard of your problem. Not one of our other guests has complained of a smell in any of the bathrooms but in rural areas of France all houses have septic tanks and it is easy to upset the delicate biological balance within the tank if items which do not dissolve easily, such as coffee grounds or fats, are thrown down the sink. Legally septic tanks must be professionally pumped out and cleaned every 4 years in France and this was carried out in March 2017 in our property. I am very glad that, despite these problems, you told me that you were enjoying the holiday after the first couple of days of rain. Kind regards Shelby

A perfect rural French holiday

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home, pool & garden with beautiful views provided us a memorable, tranquil rural holiday with the "necessary" modern connectivity. The perfect location from which to explore the beautiful French countryside and villages but don't stay without visiting St Antonin Noble Val!

Peace & tranquillity personified

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I and our two dogs spent a wonderful relaxed week at the Farmhouse.

If you're looking for a holiday which is truly away from it all, then this is the place.

The farmhouse is rustic and home from home with everything you'll need, with a garden and pool to die for.

Sadly our week was interrupted by a couple of rainy days, but these were filled by trips to some beautiful medieval villages in the region.

Peaceful rural setting with a very well maintained house and a spectacular garden.

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a wonderful week at this property. The house was spotless and very functional. The garden, pool and outside living area are spectacular and the surrounding area has much to offer for exploring or walking. A 5 out of 5 for our stay.
