Cottage and Barn 5 minutes Bergerac, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Vineyards, Orchards, Meadows And Forest
Le Clos du Verger is situated in a peaceful countryside of woods, vineyards and grazing meadows yet is only 5 minutes by car from the lovely town of Bergerac. We offer two holiday cottages. The "chai" is the former wine barn, single storey and sleeps 4 people. "Chez le charpentier" (the carpenter's cottage) sleeps 3 people, with the option of an extra bed or cot for a fourth person.
Some guests find such pleasure in the accommodation and its surroundings that they don't venture far at all, but if your aim is to to explore the many attractions of this beautiful corner of France you will find that we are ideally situated as a convenient base.
The area has a rich historical heritage dating back to early man and an active modern cultural life. You will be seduced by the fascinating old villages and castles, the local festivals, the vineyards, the lively markets, the wealth of specialist shops, the walks, the boat trips and canoeing, a nearby swimming lake, and the possibility of bike hire deliveries.
In the colder months, the underfloor heating and the woodburning stove will keep you warm and cosy, the famous sites are still open, and for Christmas stays the Christmas markets and decorations add to the sense of warmth and well being.
It's a great holiday spot and a place of warm hearted international encounters as we welcome people from round the world for their stay in the Dordogne. Recent visitors described Le Clos du Verger as a delightful hamlet, and a great base for a holiday, a rural location yet with easy access to Bergerac and the surrounding areas.
Le Clos du Verger sits in over a hectare of land, with our small herd of goats occupying the paddock areas. The main L shape of buildings incorporates the two holiday homes and the farmhouse. Cars are kept to one side so that the gardens and grounds are car free. We are careful that each occupant has their own space, but there is also plenty of space for convivial gatherings when the occasion arises. Outside, each property has its private terrace and garden, and part of the surrounding grounds are also available to our visitors. You are welcome to stroll round the paths that lead away from the main buildings down past the goats and on down to the recreation area by the stream and waterfall.
Although behind the scenes we pay great attention to providing you with an attractive, clean and comfortable holiday home with pretty outdoor spaces, Le Clos du Verger is all quite low key and relaxing, and that is part of the charm.
The two holiday homes each have a completely different style, dictated by the architecture. "Chez le charpentier" is cottage styled, and "le chai" is a stylish single storey conversion of the former wine barn. They are well presented, well equipped and easy to use, and are available throughout the year. Beds are comfortable and tend to be higher so that they are easier to get in and out of if you have creaky legs. Kitchens are equipped for real cooking, and outside spaces furnished for outside living in the summer months. There is good WiFi internet access covered by two separate high speed links.
When we arrived the buildings had been abandoned for so long that we had to install water, electricity, heating and drainage so, wherever possible, we have set up environmentally friendly technologies. Underfloor heating and constant hot water are very efficiently fuelled by heat taken from the ground, and half our electricity usage is produced by photovoltaic panels. Each property has a wood burning stove and we provide wood as part of the rental price.
Both our rental properties came into use in 2013 and since then have been greatly enjoyed by our guests. We provide a welcome basket of tasty treats and essentials, towels and bedlinen, and for those arriving by plane (a range of flights come to Bergerac airport, 20 minutes away) we can also provide dressing gowns. Each property has maps and tourist information, as well as our own guide of local things to see and do and places to eat. We live on the site too so one of us is usually available if you have a question or just fancy a chat.

Fantastic accomodation, good location for sightseeing. perfect hosts
About the Owner
Martin and I never meant to move to France, but in 2009 we were unexpectedly seduced by an old neglected farmstead near Bergerac. Shut up for 30 years and nearly destroyed by this neglect, the simplicity of the buildings seemed worth saving and reminded us of a way of life of our rural grandparents.
Warmly welcomed by our delightful French neighbours, and encouraged by the previous family who lived here for generations, we have gradually brought the place back to life. It is our permanent home as well as a place for international friendships. We look forward to welcoming you here too.

Fantastic accomodation, good location for sightseeing. perfect hosts
Spent a lovely week in this beautiful accommodation. Jane and Martin are genuinely lovely people and made us feel very welcome. A very special place to relax in
Fantastic Gite in a Great Location
Jane the owner gave us a hand with our voluminous luggage and all went well from there. Wonderful gite, looked old but was wonderfully equipped and comfortable inside. Comfortable beds, great bathroom with fantastic shower and well appointed kitchen. Lots of well thought out touches.
We had a great pizza from Maurens, and would love to go back and try the restaurant, Olivers.
Very helpful, cheerful, knowledgeable host.
Great location, only 10 minutes from the interesting town of Bergerac, a brilliant base from which to explore the many interesting places nearby.
My only regret in leaving this review is that it may be booked next time I go back, and I will go back.
Warmest welcome by Jane and Martin
Dear Jane and Martin, we were going to write a. If thankyou for looking after all our needs, but the website Owners Direct appeared so I can send you Easter Greetings, we had a safe journey onwards, didn't realise we were to end up quite so high up in the Cevennes?!! . Another good welcome and invited to the family lunch Easter Sunday Wild Boar, seen several droppings in the forest.
Your Chai gave us such a lovely relaxing rest, the lunch at Mauren Perfect. We wish you both our best wishes for the final finish touches to the buildings, Bill would help if he could ?!!
From Hope and Bill Marshall. Switzerland, then retire with daughter in NZ. Everything of the best detail was there for us, many thanks. Interested guests do go to la Chai.
Great accommodation, convenient and quiet
We received a warm welcome from Jane and Martin. Spacious accommodation which is very well equipped, clean and with nice furnishings. Situated in a quiet spot, yet only 5 mins drive to Bergerac, and well positioned for accessing surrounding attractions and towns. Good quality and value for money.
From the Owner
“Le Clos du Verger is a rural property about 5 minutes drive from the lively and attractive town of Bergerac. The property and its potential seduced us. We could tell a story worthy of Grand Designs about the ups and downs of the renovation project. And like any Grand Design our efforts have produced something very special. We love living here. It is an amazing part of France whose rich history links our English roots closely with Aquitaine. Our local community has made us very welcome, and after 5 years here we feel this is where we belong. Both Martin and I are country souls so having space, a beautiful environment and a few animals is important to us. But we also wanted the convenience and interest of an active town nearby, lovely Bergerac just 5 minutes away fits the bill perfect”

Our guests tell us they enjoy the rural location and like its proximity to Bergerac, and the easy access to the great variety of places to visit and things to do in the Périgord. You can hit the main tourism routes to see the magnificent historical sites dating right back to the cave paintings of early man, or if you just explore within a 10 - 15 mile radius you will find plenty to interest you.
Bergerac itself has a varied cultural life, and excellent markets, featuring the wealth of local products. It has a beautiful old town, enlivened during the warmer months with nightly street events such as jazz in the cloisters or dancing in one of the squares. The season is punctuated by weekend festivals in the villages and in the town, often themed.
The multitude of sites and caves connected with early man (even a dinosaur park!) make an interesting day out. The history of the area includes rich links between England and France for Eleanor of Aquitaine was also Queen of England. Her sons fought to maintain their inheritance so this beautiful region was not exempt from the troubles of the Hundred Years War. The multitude of medieval castles are still there to visit today, as are the fascinating "bastide" towns.
This is also a sporting region with some noteworthy local successes. From a holiday point of view you can join in too - whether fishing, watching a rugby match, cycling, running, rowing, canoeing, or walking.
For families there is an Aquapark 10 minutes away or swimming from a lakeside beach. Catch your supper at a local trout lake or arrange a day's carp fishing in a private lake 40 mins from here. The boat trips on the Dordogne give a different perspective of this long and varied river, or there are many hire canoes outlets for you to explore at your own pace.
The vineyards offer walks, picnics and wine tastings, and start at St Foy des Vignes just up the hill. We can link you to wine tour partners.
Such an interesting and beautiful part of France - come and see for yourselves!

- Notes on accommodation: Washing machine in separate guest laundry. Bedlinen, towels and tea towels included. Beds made up for your arrival. Baby equipment available by prior arrangement. Hair-dryer in each property. Welcome basket of local products, and milk, tea, coffee. Fondue set, raclette sets available. Satellite TV on free-to-view channels. Good WiFi internet link (usually!) Centrally heated from mid October to mid April - underfloor heating on ground floors, radiators upstairs. We provide all dishwasher, clothes washing and other cleaning products because we have a biodigester drainage system which works brilliantly as long as no anti bacterial cleaning products or bleach based products are used. No ball games near the buildings - we provide a dedicated space in the paddocks when the ground conditions are suitable. Sorry - no smoking inside the properties. We don't usually take dogs. We have a small herd of miniature goats and a few chickens in one of our paddocks, but no dogs or cats. Outside: Each property has a pleasant patio and garden space. Outdoor furniture includes a barbeque, dining table, parasol, and less formal seating. Down by the stream are more seats as well as a recreation area for ball games with a small goal and a net for handball/basketball. Settle yourself down with a glass of wine or a picnic lulled by sound of water tumbling over the waterfall. Watch carefully and you may well see deer and wild boar near the woods, and trout in the stream, as well as a variety of dragonflies, birds and butterflies. Note that this is not a swimming stream - we recommend the swimming lakes 10 minutes drive away. There is a variety of fruit and nut trees on the site - figs, peaches, plums, apples, pears and walnuts - as well as our vegetable garden. You are very welcome to use any excess produce. We have a guest car park so that we contain vehicle movements round the site as much as possible.
