Luxury Peak District Cottage With Private Pool

Updated: 20-Oct-2016
Cottage in Fenny Bentley, Nr Ashbourne, Derbyshire - Rural Tranquility, But Only 2 Miles From The Bustling Georgian Market Town Of Ashbourne

Just 2 miles from the Georgian market town of Ashbourne, Swallows Cottage sits down a private lane, amidst 5 acres of gardens and orchards (help yourselves to plums, damsons and apples in Autumn.) Take a footpath directly from your back door to the historical village of Tissington and beyond. Lounge by the private pool (only shared with owners) during Summer months (Mid-May, June, July & August) or bring a rod and try your luck fishing on the Bentley Brook. Curl up on the huge leather sofa watching one of the many dvd's in front of the wood burning stove in the sitting room, furnished with French antiques. There are plenty of books and games, too. Rustle up your favourite meal in the well-equipped, large kitchen/dining room with large scrubbed pine table (seats 8) and Smeg fridge/freezer,Nespresso machine, dishwasher, washing machine/dryer or treat yourself to a home-made ready meal from one of the delightful delicatessens in Ashbourne. Sleep peacefully in the antique four poster bed with crisp linen sheets -this room also has a tv - and far reaching views of the fields beyond. The cosy twin-bedded room has plenty of storage and we can also supply a travel cot and high chair, too. Modern bathroom with limestone flooring and underfloor heating. Derbyshire's Jewel in the Crown, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall and Alton Towers/Splash Landings are just 30 minutes away. Enjoy traditional local pubs, gastro pubs and restaurants with excellent food and real fires. Explore Derbyshire in comfort. Try horse trekking at Tissington, Cycling and Sailing at Carsington Water. Fluffy white towels, bath mats and all linen provided, apart from swimming towels. Kitchen basics - tea, coffee, sugar, spices, dish tabs, washing powder all included. Private patio with seating for four and Weber bbq.

About the Owner

Simon and I bought The Priory, Swallows Cottage and The Old Engine house some three years ago. Since then we have renovated The Priory and Swallow's Cottage to ensure maximum comfort - whether it be beds, heating or endless hot water. Our landscape gardener has developed the grounds, especially around the swimming pool, sympathetically and with great detail. Our three teenage children are often away and we relish the chance to look after our Swallows Cottage guests and love introducing them to our special Derbyshire "finds". We love being in such a peaceful spot but are endlessly grateful that we are just such a short distance from Ashbourne.

"A very warm welcome!" - An ideally placed cottage that is well equipped with all the home from home comforts. All the basics were available in the kitchen and it seemed that nothing would be too much trouble for Izzy."

"A home-from-home - only better" . We booked the cottage for a relaxing girly weekend away and it was just perfect. We received a very warm welcome from the owner Izzy who is lovely.

Swallows Cottage is in an idyllic setting. It is a charming and very welcoming holiday home.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time in Fenny Bentley at Swallows Cottage. The cottage is well appointed and very comfortable - we had some great family dinners around the large kitchen table! Watching the Autumn mists slowly disperse from the long lawn was a breakfast treat. Ashbourne is only a couple of miles away and has a good range of food shops and eating places. The Derbyshire countryside is glorious with Dovedale, Tissington and Ilam at your doorstep. We live in a large city so the quiet, and the chance to experience real darkness and to see the stars, was a rare pleasure. Izzie, our host, was welcoming and helpful. Altogether lovely!

A wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage and wonderful, helpful hosts.

The cottage is in a great location for exploring the surrounding area and is lovely and peaceful too.

As a family we don't tend to return to the same place twice but we wouldn't hesitate to return here.

A lovely weekend break

We enjoyed a relaxing weekend break in late May. Izzy made us feel very welcome and was on hand to help with any request. The cottage was immaculate, the surroundings peaceful and idyllic, and the children loved the pool. I can recommend this property without reservation.

Superb Swallows Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have returned fully refreshed after a fantastic long weekend break at Swallows Cottage. There was everything we needed and more to make our stay really relaxing including homemade shortbread which was delicious. The location is perfect for those walkers wanting to visit Monsal Head and Dovedale. Tissington is very close by which has great biking trails. Plenty of towels made the packing a much lighter task. This cottage is one of the most comfortable we have ever booked through Owners Direct. We would love to revisit when the pool is open for business as this is a luxury obviously not to be missed. Although right next door Izzy was helpful but not intrusive during our stay and she was so friendly, a lovely hostess. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your pretty cottage.

Fabulous break

  • 5 of 5

We had a super break at Swallows Cottage and just wish we could have stayed for longer. It is a great place to recharge, relax and enjoy the countryside. We went on some great walks to Dovedale, Ilam and surrounding areas. We would recommend cycling the Monsal trail which is great for youngsters as it is flat and safe. Nearby Tissington is lovely for a wander round and of course the children loved the sweetshop! The cottage itself is very cosy and has everything that you could possibly need. We enjoyed spending our evenings by the fire playing board games and generally relaxing. Izzy was very welcoming and helpful. We couldn't have asked for more and can't wait to go back!

From the Owner

Having lived in a local village (some 6 miles from Asbourne), very happily, for 10 years, we were thrilled to find the combination of rural peace but without being miles from civilization - with Ashbourne just 2 miles away we can easily whizz in for milk, papers and take-aways without feeling that we are in a built-up area. An added bonus is that we can walk by footpath, directly from the front door, to Tissington and Fenny Bentley.

The Georgian market town of Ashbourne is just 2 miles away, with plenty of independent retailers (antique shops, clothes and delicatessens) alongside a Waitrose, Majestic Wine, Sainsburys, M&S Food, and Co-Op. The village of Brassington (5 miles) has a wonderful, unspoilt pub serving excellent pub food - The Old Gate Inn. The Duncombe Arms at Ellastone (8 miles) is a fabulous, buzzy pub with delicious food. The George at Alstonefield (6.5 miles) has truly amazing food - all of the above are worth booking beforehand. Newly opened "Whites" in Ashbourne offers relaxed French food and a great selection of cocktails. We also love Cafe Impromptu on Church Street in Ashbourne...when they say home-made they really mean it....open for breakfast, lunch and tea.

The estate-owned village of Tissington can be reached by footpath from your back door (or a quick 5 minute drive). Frequently used for historical filming this unspoilt gem is great for walking around...village duck pond, butchers, old fashioned sweetie shop and great tea rooms...their annual Well Dressings (on Ascension Day) are not to be missed. Take the Tissington Trail (walk or cycle) to Ashbourne or north towards Parsley Hay.

A visit to Chatsworth is a must....look on their website for behind-the scenes tours and special events. Don't forget Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, too.

Younger children will love the farmyard at Chatsworth, Gulliver's Kingdom, Alton Towers, china painting at Sticky Fingers in Ashbourne or just cycling round Carsington Water.

From the Owner

When we bought the property we were advised by many friends not to put a pool in - how glad we are now that we ignored their advice! This Summer has been glorious - Derbyshire at its very best. Breakfasting by the pool on a quiet Summer's morning can't be beaten. We have fishing rights on the Bentley Brook (just across the lane) and you are welcome to bring your fishing kit.
