About Isobel James

Simon and I bought The Priory, Swallows Cottage and The Old Engine house in 2009. Since then we have renovated The Priory and Swallow's Cottage to ensure maximum comfort - whether it be beds, heating or endless hot water. Our landscape gardener has developed the grounds, especially around the swimming pool, sympathetically and with great detail. Our three teenage children are often away and we relish the chance to look after our Swallows Cottage guests and love introducing them to our special Derbyshire "finds". We love being in such a peaceful spot but are endlessly grateful that we are just such a short distance from Ashbourne.

Isobel James purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Isobel James chose Fenny Bentley

Having lived in a local village (some 6 miles from Asbourne), very happily, for 10 years, we were thrilled to find the combination of rural peace but without being miles from civilization - with Ashbourne just 2 miles away we can easily whizz in for milk, papers and take-aways without feeling that we are in a built-up area. An added bonus is that we can walk by footpath, directly from the front door, to Tissington and Fenny Bentley.

What makes this cottage unique

When we bought the property we were advised by many friends not to put a pool in - how glad we are now that we ignored their advice! This Summer has been glorious - Derbyshire at its very best. Breakfasting by the pool on a quiet Summer's morning can't be beaten. We have fishing rights on the Bentley Brook (just across the lane) and you are welcome to bring your fishing kit.

Excellent weekend break!

  • 5 of 5

A lovely old cottage with real character. Well-furnished with a very well-equipped kitchen and a good powerful shower with plenty of hot water. An excellent location for walking, a good walk to Parwich is literally outside the front door (but be warned, you'll need some proper boots after rain, it gets very muddy!). A very friendly host, the welcome bottle of bubbly was most appreciated!

The only downside was having to go home at the end of an all-too-brief break. A return visit earlier in the year could well be in order, to sample the pool...

Home from Home !

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage, everything you could want and need. Pool was lovely, my partner and girls loved it - although a bit cold for me ! Lots to do and some lovely villages around, Ilam and Tissington were gorgeous. Pubs were lovely and we had great weather. We were left to ourselves, but knew someone was there if we needed to know anything. Izzy keeps the cottage very homely. The Hood-Hughes family - North Wales.

Beautiful location, lots to do and still relax in the evenings.

  • 5 of 5

Had a great week away and even though the weather wasn't great, still kept busy with many beautiful local places to visit. Wonderful views all around to clear the mind and get away from the hustle of city working life. The pool is a bonus. I'm not great with mobility but this pool is easy access with graduated steps at one end. There are a few small steps into the cottage itself but then its all on one level so perfect for me. Both hosts very friendly and happy to help. They are on-site, and available without you even noticing they are there. We are hoping to re-visit.

Great little location away from the world...

  • 4 of 5

Originally I booked this apartment for the pool but misread that its not actuallly open until Mid-May. Still we had a great time. One thing to note is that you will have no telephone reception at this location and there is no landline provided by the owners so you are cut off from the world. Internet speed is 2MB down and 0.5mb up. and the wifi signal does not reach the bedroom. Was a little worried as we have small kids with us and incase of emergency did not have a phone service

Owner's Response: We do think that part of the charm of the cottage is, as you say, "away from the world" - and naturally would have provided a land line phone if you had needed one - we are only a few steps away and totally understand the need for contact if you have small children. We do have mobile service at the house - I am not sure what provider you have, though. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay.

Exceeded Expectations

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was simply perfect for a family get away in the Peak District.

The property itself was bigger than I expected, a large kitchen with a good sized (easily seat 6) pine table and a sizeable living room. It was very well appointed with good crockery and cutlery - a small thing but indicative of the care taken to ensure that guests can feel relaxed.

I have no hesitation in recommending this to anybody looking for a cottage in the Peaks.

The Georgian market town of Ashbourne is just 2 miles away, with plenty of independent retailers (antique shops, clothes and delicatessens) alongside a Waitrose, Majestic Wine, Sainsburys, M&S Food, and Co-Op. The village of Brassington (5 miles) has a wonderful, unspoilt pub serving excellent pub food - The Old Gate Inn. The Duncombe Arms at Ellastone (8 miles) is a fabulous, buzzy pub with delicious food. The George at Alstonefield (6.5 miles) has truly amazing food - all of the above are worth booking beforehand. Newly opened "Whites" in Ashbourne offers relaxed French food and a great selection of cocktails. We also love Cafe Impromptu on Church Street in Ashbourne...when they say home-made they really mean it....open for breakfast, lunch and tea.

The estate-owned village of Tissington can be reached by footpath from your back door (or a quick 5 minute drive). Frequently used for historical filming this unspoilt gem is great for walking around...village duck pond, butchers, old fashioned sweetie shop and great tea rooms...their annual Well Dressings (on Ascension Day) are not to be missed. Take the Tissington Trail (walk or cycle) to Ashbourne or north towards Parsley Hay.

A visit to Chatsworth is a must....look on their website for behind-the scenes tours and special events. Don't forget Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, too.

Younger children will love the farmyard at Chatsworth, Gulliver's Kingdom, Alton Towers, china painting at Sticky Fingers in Ashbourne or just cycling round Carsington Water.
