Beautiful Villa With Private Pool

Updated: 19-Sep-2016
Complete Peace In Heart Of The S'Albufera Nature Reserve

Timonera (Spanish for 'wheelhouse') commands stunning 360 degree countryside views towards the sea on a magnificent plot at the end of a long sweeping drive and is set in beautiful landscaped gardens with palms, wild olive, oleander, tamarisk, citrus and bougainvillea. Upstairs the reception rooms and kitchen are bright, light and spacious with vaulted ceilings and beyond the kitchen an outside terrace with table and chairs under a sun awning. The bedrooms on the ground floor open out onto an enclosed characterful limestone-flagged courtyard - a secluded area perfect for alfresco dining. The large private pool, with ample terracing for sunbathing, is also situated in an enclosed area making this a safer villa for young children. If you want complete peace and privacy then Timonera is your ideal place.

Timonera - where nightingales sing and eagles soar

  • 5 of 5

Situated in the beautiful national park of S'Albufera, Timonera has stunning views across to Monte Toro in the North West and down to glimpses of the sea in the opposite direction. It is a haven of peace and tranquility, perfect if you prefer somewhere away from the crowds and a must if you are a nature lover. Sit on the balcony and watch eagles and kites soar on the thermals above you or take a drink out in the evening and listen to the churring of nightjars and the hooting of Scops Owls while bats swoop across the pool catching insects.

This was our fourth visit to Timonera after a gap of over ten years. We used to go when we had young children and now we took them as adults. We all had a wonderful week, the weather was lovely and the pool was warm enough to swim in every day.

Timonera is incredibly spacious, versatile, comfortable and well equipped. High quality, secure, twist and turn double-glazed windows, doors and shutters have replaced the ones that used to rattle in the wind and every bedroom now has access to the outside, three of them to the lovely internal courtyard as before and the fourth (we call it the sunrise bedroom) to one of the garden paths. The kitchen was very well stocked with crockery, cooking utensils, store cupboard items and cleaning products. Most importantly the beds are comfortable, the showers are powerful and there is a huge choice of seating areas inside and out, in sun and shade, stone benches to sun loungers and plenty of everything - you are spoilt for choice! The pool is beautiful, although not best suited to the youngest children as it gets deep quite quickly, and it is large enough to have a proper swim in.

Menorca is a very pretty island in May, the roads are quiet, and the recently opened Cami de Cavalls provides excellent walking opportunities all around the island, it is very clearly signposted too as are the many cycle routes. You will need a car for Timonera as it is a little off the beaten track but it is only a few minutes to Es Grau and only 15 minutes to the airport or Mahon. There are many walks directly from the villa with a wealth of wildlife and wild flowers in and around the park and lake of S'Albufera. The boardwalk through the pine woods of Es Grau is a good place to spot wild tortoises too.

Communication with Angela, the owner, and Sarah, the manager was very friendly and efficient both during booking and while we were there. A wonderful, relaxing week, thank you!

Heaven with a slice of lemon

  • 5 of 5

We found our second holiday at Timonera even more relaxing than the first. It felt so welcoming, It was as though we were staying in the house of good friends. Each room has it's own charm and character and the gardens and pool area were perfect at any time of the day. Our family now call Timonera "Heaven, with a slice of lemon" but you can judge for yourselves.

Perfect retreat and a nature lovers paradise

  • 5 of 5

What amazing holiday my family and I had in every way at Timonera. The Villa has amazing views as it is situated on the brow of a hill in a very private part of the S'Albufera National Park. The villa is beautiful, spacious and very well managed and looked after that made our stay very comfortable and stress free. The pool is lovely and the kids spent many happy hours splashing about, it has a very nice shaded area for when the sun got too hot to be out in.

If you are nature lovers then this is a great place to stay. Booted Eagles, Red Kites, Kestrels and the occasional Egyptian Vulture are seen daily flying around the area. Scops owls can be heard at night with their wonderful "tooting" and bats fly around the villa helping to keep the midge and moth levels down! The kids loved the wild Tortoises that we regularly saw around the area and we had a Pine Martin visit the garden one evening!

Since we last visited Timonera, Angela and Peter (the owners) have had mosquito nets installed in the windows and doors of the bedrooms which is a brilliant addition and had a Menorcan style dry stone wall constructed by the pool which looks beautiful.

This is the third time we've stayed at Timonera and won't be the last. We can't recommend it enough.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much Nina for your interesting review. We are delighted that you all had such a happy time at Timonera and thrilled that you managed to see so much of the fascinating wildlife there in S'Albufera. We bought the house almost two years ago realising what a privilege it is to able to experience and enjoy the peace, purity and beauty in this biosphere reserve.

As a family of 8 ranging in age from 6 months to 70 yrs we all had different ideas of what makes the perfect holiday, but from our initial point of enquiry to our departure all of our needs were met and even surpassed.

Angela the villa owner along with Sarah the manager were a pleasure and nothing was too much trouble, there was nothing they hadn't thought about and the villa was so well equipped with everything and more that you could need, it really was a home from home. Thoughtful touches like groceries on arrival, DVD's and board games (for the one rainy day that we had) to a spare travel cot/playpen that we could use by the pool terrace made a big difference.

The Villa itself was beautiful, clean and extremely comfortable and in the most glorious peaceful setting. The huge pool was in constant use by the two older children and the lockable doors that you use to access the pool were a huge relief to us parents. Located just a few mins drive from Es Grau with its sheltered shallow beach and approx 10-15 mins from bustling Mahon it's perfectly situated for those who want the best of both worlds.

I really don't have anything negative to say about the Villa (or the area) we had a problem with the bed in one of the rooms, but it was replaced and sorted out so quickly that even that was a positive experience!

I really cant recommend Timonera enough, in my eyes it was the perfect villa for a family/group and the service we were given made it even more special. Without doubt, we will be returning.

Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful holiday! Menorca is a diverse and incredibly friendly island and S’Albufera, the National Park, is one of the most beautiful areas. If you’re a wildlife lover, it will be a delight, with birds, lizards and even tree frogs! Timonera makes the most of the park with stunning views from every window. The villa is spacious, airy and comfortable with excellent facilities and a lovely, clean pool. It was spotless when we arrived and the linen change at the end of the first week was very efficient. We loved the nearby capital city Mao (Mahon), with it’s fabulous harbour, shops and restaurants. The local village of Es’Grau has a child friendly beach and a minimarket to supply everyday needs. Kayaking, sailing and boat trips are available there. Simply, the best holiday for quite some time!

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The S'Albufera lake is the last fresh water 'stop over' for birds migrating between Europe and Africa and is the main reason that Menorca was chosen to be designated a protected biosphere.

There is a very good diving school at Binibeca.

The charming fishing village of Es Grau is only a five minute drive away with its child-friendly beach, a useful mini-market and attractive little bars at the water's edge.

Timonera is about fifteen minutes drive from the airport and ten from Mahon. You really do need a car. Although quite a small Island there so much that's worth going to see, it would be a shame to miss it all!

The bustling port of Mahon with its restaurants, bars and boutiques is a mere 10 minute drive away.
