About Jane McLachlan

We are semi-retired and chose this small, peaceful country estate as our perfect forever home. We have 1 dog and enjoy gardening, walking and bird watching.

Jane McLachlan purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Jane McLachlan chose Parkham

This peaceful area of North Devon remains unspoiled by traffic noise or light pollution. It is a quiet and tranquil location in a sheltered wooded valley but is within easy commuting distance of villages, dog friendly beaches and moorland. The South West Coastal path is easily accessed by car, bike or on foot. There are also many National Trust properties, National Garden scheme gardens to visit and the RHS Rosemoor gardens are just a 15 minutes drive away

What makes this cottage unique

The private location of the Little Bocombe estate gives tranquility, seclusion and peace to relax. Gardeners Cottage has more than an acre of garden and orchard for your sole use, and you're welcome to walk in the wood and meadow, with or without dogs who must be under control. There are great pubs, restaurants and villages to explore with many antique & collectables hunting opportunities. Award winning farm shop with local meat and produce, everything you need for a delicious cream tea - scones, choices of jam and clotted cream. Interesting curios and collectables stable well worth a visit to see unusual goodies on offer.

Personalised guides to the area are in the cottage, which has many ideas and tips for you to gain the most from your holiday. We look forward to welcoming you to the haven that is Little Bocombe.

Return to Paradise

As promised… we’re back!

As soon as we set foot over the threshold it felt like we were home and all the stresses of modern life disappeared. Stanley and Jessie (the English Bulldogs) both knew exactly where they were the minute they got out of the car; in fact, Stanley’s first mission was to find an apple but not understanding how the seasons work, he was very disappointed until we unpacked and found the tennis balls for him.

It was amazing being back at Gardeners Cottage and to see the stunning gardens in a different season to previously was wonderful. Although we only live about 45 miles away we were amazed by the number of bluebells and primroses which transported us back to our childhoods, our daily walks saw the leaves starting to unfurl from their buds.

Yet again, Lynn did an amazing job getting the cottage ready for our every need and the cream tea was waiting once more (not sure it lasted any longer than last time though)! With Lynn on hand in case of an emergency it’s comforting to know that any questions or problems can be answered without fuss or delay.

We were very lucky to have beautiful spring sunshine and were able to sit out in the garden with our afternoon cuppa whilst the ‘babies’ had a play in the garden. Early evening, we sat watching the birds feeding on the feeders.

We are thrilled to say that we have already booked our third visit to Gardeners Cottage for later this year and we cannot wait.

There is a reason that Devon rhymes with heaven and Gardener’s Cottage is at the heart of it!

From initial contact to booking and arrival, communication with the owner has been superb.

We arrived to find a fantastic cream tea laid out ready for us – much appreciated and enjoyed. The cottage is so well equipped that we wanted for nothing and only ate out because we were on holiday.

The kitchen had a dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge freezer and an array of equipment. The open plan lounge, dining area and kitchen are very well set out and the inclusion of Sky TV was very unexpected. We can personally recommend The Bell Inn in the village of Parkham, excellent food and very friendly staff and regulars.

Although there is no mobile phone signal in the cottage and internet access is not possible, this makes it all the better because you really do ‘get away from it all’ with no interruptions from work, friends or family (…sorry Mum)!

We shared our holiday with two of our six dogs, 9 month and 7 month old English Bulldog pups who absolutely adored their surroundings, their favourite game all holiday was playing with the fallen apples in the orchard (too similar to tennis balls I think). The walks in the grounds are fantastic and the attached paddock was stunning and is being returned to meadow land with great care and consideration for nature.

There are plenty of brochures for local attractions and places to visit, as well as a book with recommendations from the owners, all of which help to make visitors at home and plan their days to the full.

The housekeeper is very local and on hand to respond to any queries, not that there are any as everything has been thought of.

Needless to say, and to coin the phrase from Arnold Schwarzenegger …. We’ll be back!!!! In fact, we’re looking forward to our next holiday already and have lots of ideas for things to do.

Oh, and the photos are just perfect reminders of the wonderful time we had.

Fabulous place

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a fabulous holiday at Gardeners Cottage. The cottage has everything you need & the welcome from Lyn was wonderful. The huge private garden was a total bonus for our bouncy 11 month old pup & the peace & tranquility(even though it was a very wet week!!) were beyond compare. On our list of "must return to" cottages

Owner's Response: Although we do enjoy earlier than usual spring sunshine, just in case it does rain we've tried to provide lots of things to do indoors. We're also glad visitors do use the grounds and the field, especially when dogs are also on holiday as it gives them lots of space and freedom to run about. Glad you enjoyed your holiday at Gardeners Cottage

Excellent cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a weeks break at Gardeners Cottage with our 2 dogs. The cottage is very well presented and one of the best we have stayed in that lets dogs stay. The location is peaceful and there are plenty of walks so the dogs can go off lead. We explored all of the area and the beaches and it was nice to come back to the cottage due to the tranquillity of the location. Walking back from the local pub, the lack of light pollution means the stars can be seen on a clear night. Cottage is well equipped and very warm. The birds and squirrels can be watched from the sitting room. We did watch some of the DVDs that are left at the cottage. Will return one day

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, we've tried to make Gardeners Cottage as dog friendly as possible but also equipped to the standard we would wish to have when on holiday. Having dogs doesn't mean we'll all settle for less! Glad you tried the great local pub The Bell and enjoyed the stars on the walk downhill back to the cottage. North Devon has great skies day or night.

Wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just spent a long weekend at the cottage and it was absolutely lovely. The cottage is really homely and relaxing and there is everything there you need. The orchard and grounds are excellent and we had a very happy Labrador who loved strolling around the beautiful garden and relaxing on the decking. This is one of the best dog friendly places we have ever stayed and would like to thank you. The location is so peaceful yet not far from lots of great places and beaches to visit. We ate at the local pub, The Bell, and the food was really good and staff very friendly - it was nice to have a pub in walking distance and be able to leave the car. thanks to Jane, Lynn and Pete who made our stay so lovely - we will definitely be back...

Just the thing

  • 5 of 5

A belated thank you very much to Jane. We had an absolutely fabulous time at the cottage. It was the last week in November and we had been searching for somewhere to go with a nine-month puppy. The cottage is wonderfully warm and welcoming. We were very cosy and made the most of all the facilities. It was great to have the run of the estate with the dog.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet, the birds and the comfort. The big leather chair and sofa were just as lovely as the four-poster bed. I had toyed with bringing a bird-feeder with us. But of course we didn't need one; there were already a couple of filled feeders hanging in the trees when we arrived. One of the many little touches that we appreciated so much.

The local beaches were beautiful. It being so late in the year we shared them with just a few other dogwalkers and some surfers. There are endless miles of soft, sandy beach to enjoy. We were so surprised and delighted to see how unspoilt were the towns of Woolacombe and Ilfracombe .

The local pubs were a joy, especially the Bell Inn nearby. We were also very taken with the Thatch at Croyde which does fabulous food for a pub.

We cooked a few meals in the cottage. Everything we needed was provided and it was very comfy siting and eating in front of the log-burner. As you promised the log baskets were refilled just for the asking.

Lynn (the housekeeper) is lovely. Her willingness to help is matched only by her wish not to interfere - and she does it all so well.

We would definitely come again. And anyone nervous of taking a week in winter should be reassured that there is lots to do and to enjoy and that the cottage is just so very warm and welcoming.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback, we're glad you clearly had a good time at Gardeners Cottage and made full use of all that's on offer. This year the birds seem to be very brightly coloured as if they're getting ready early for the breeding season. One of the winter benefits is the use of the local beaches, sometimes almost to yourself. We hope the break will set you in fine stead ready for the winter and our very best wishes for 2015. Jane and Hugh, Pete and Lynn and all the crew

Award winning farm shop and curiosity shop near by.

Our favourite beach is at Instow which is about 6 miles away and is dog friendly year round. Also has sand dunes, pubs, restaurants, shop, art gallery. Famous for Top Gear beach assault test drive.

Westwood Ho provides family fun with long sandy beach, rock pools to explore and pebble ridge. Busy village with shops, restaurants, pubs and amusements.

Exeter airport is approx 1 hour by car

Bocombe is a small hamlet, our nearest village is Parkham with a great butcher's shop.

For sea views while you eat, another favourite of ours is The Beaver at Appledore. Booking for restaurant is essential but you can also take your dogs with you into the pub area. If Tapas are more your thing try Broomhill. A hotel, restaurant, art gallery and sculpture park makes a great day out.

Further Details:

The Atlantic Village Shopping Mall on the A39 is just outside Bideford, has Asda, M & S, Gap, Cotton Traders, Holland and Barrett, Hallmark and many more shops.
