About the Owner

James, Sharon and our family live in 'The Old House', a 200 year old property, that used to be the village pub many years ago. We have lots of space for the family, our two black labs 'the boys', Lily the Jack Russell, Tink the Patterdale Terrier, Eddie the parrot and our collection of chickens, all surprisingly very well behaved. Although we both work full-time, we constantly strive to keep our home and the cottage in beautiful order. The village is very pretty, especially in summer and the residents are really friendly, always having time to stop for a quick chat. We're a very friendly and reasonably quiet bunch. We respect our visitors privacy, but we're on hand should anyone need us. A warm welcome awaits from our family to yours.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mr & Mrs Floyd from Herefordshire said it was the best cottage they had ever stayed in and the warm and friendly welcome had them re-booking before they left.

Mr & Mrs Sherburn of Sheffield commented what a beautiful and peaceful setting, loved the cottage and the pub food. Their border terrier had a fabulous time too!

Brill stay

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for five nights in this lovely little property and had a really good time. We received a lovely welcome from this lovely couple and they were excellent throughout our stay. The property is well equipped with everything you could need and is lovely and clean and fresh. It is is a nice location handy for travelling around. The pub down the road was great and we had a good meal there. We will return hopefully again. Thank you very much. Sue, Dave, Michael, Bradley and Sky

We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a lovely week in this well-situated cottage. Ideal location to explore Filey, Scarborough,Whitby, York, the Moors etc. The cottage was immaculately clean, and very well shocked and maintained. The large garden, with picnic tables, was lovely - and the off-road parking a bonus. Owners Sharon and James were very welcoming and helpful. This is the only holiday location we have ever used where there has been an abundance of coat hangers - thank you! Excellent food at the Foxhound Inn (very large portions too!).

Owner's Response: Thank you Alison for taking the time to write this review, it's fabulous to know when our visitors have really enjoyed their holiday. The Foxhounds pub really is a bonus just around the corner and it's always a challenge to see if you can clear your plate! Our believe our Jack Russell Lily also enjoyed your stay whilst playing in the garden with your grandson, so it was a winning week all round. We'll look forward to seeing you again, Sharon & James.

Lovely holiday wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

We visited with my elderly dad, and 2 dogs. The accommodation was spotless and had just about everything we could have needed. Very comfortable beds and great storage in the hallway outside the bedrooms. Excellent shower in the bathroom. Although there is no dining area, we were able to use the garden table and chairs and as the weather was beautiful during our stay we enjoyed our breakfasts outside. Our hosts could not have been kinder or more helpful. We and our dogs had extensive use of their lovely big garden and they were very helpful when we had car problems, arranging for us to visit a local garage.

The local Foxhounds pub, has good and well priced pub grub (though the portions are ENORMOUS!) and is friendly and efficient. The area is fantastic - so much to see and do, we barely touched the surface but would highly recommend a trip to York with the Railway Museum, the Minster, and a wonderful shop called the Imagninarium. We had a peaceful lunch just minutes away from the city centre at the Bay Horse Inn in Marygate. For railway enthusiasts we recommend a trip on the North York Moors Railway - very dog friendly and fab steam trains. We started at Pickering (a pretty market town) and the line goes through to Whitby. We had a really good day. Also we would recommend a visit to Wharram Percy - a deserted medieval village in a beautiful location south of Pickering. We also enjoyed, Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough, Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough Head.

Overall we cannot recommend the accommodation, our lovely hosts and the area enough. We hope to return.

Owner's Response: We would like to thank Fiona and Martin for this very complimentary review. Such friendly people are a delight to have stay with happy and well behaved dogs too! It's really satisfying when our visitors really do get so much out of their holiday, visiting all the sites they would like to see. The area has so much to offer and the sunshine is just a great bonus. We hope to see them again very soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you to the Ferguson family for this lovely review. I think we enjoyed having them stay as much as they enjoyed their holiday! We have met some lovely people from their part of the world (Scotland) and this family was no exception. It really is a benefit to meet such lovely people and we hope to see them again one day. Goldies retreat

  • 5 of 5

Excellent welcoming owners. Very comfortable and quiet. Lovely location. Loads of space for dog and children to run round in enclosed big garden. Owners obviously love dogs and are very accommodating. Plenty of towels and hot water and extremely well equipped for cooking if you so wish to do so. Loads and loads of storage space. Lovely walk near by in Flixton and close to Playdays farm if you have children......3 minute drive and Filey close by takes approx. 5 / 10 minutes drive to get there. Fox Hounds Pub does take away menu but does not allow dogs in ....just around the corner. Huge meals if you are hungry. Station Pub in filey does allow dogs in and has a lovely carvery.

Owner's Response: We do our very best to advise our visitors in helping them to enjoy their break to its fullest. Taking full advantage of the cottage, the area and its surroundings, whilst respecting their privacy at all times. We are thrilled that 'Goldies Mates' (owners of a beautiful Cocker-Poo) enjoyed their stay so much, we're obviously doing something right! We hope to see them again soon. Sharon & James.

Location

From the Owner

We bought this property because it's set in a pretty village with nearby farms. It's quiet and the house is old as it's name suggests, with a long and interesting history. It's a typical white wash and stone village, beautifully quiet, but within 5 minutes drive of a large supermarket, with easy access to all the surrounding towns and amenities. Only 15-20 minutes away from cinema's, the theatre, a swimming pool, cricket and golf, cycling and walking, shopping and eating, there really is something for everyone. In contrast the lovely garden is perfect for relaxing any day of the week with the odd horse naying in the distance!

Further Details:
