Characterful Farmhouse With Large Pool Set Amidst Sunflowers And Vineyards

Bedrooms 4
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Farmhouse in Saint-Jean-de-Duras, Nr. Duras, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine / Dordogne, France - Beautiful And Peaceful Spot, Yet A Short Drive From The Busy Markets In Eymet And Duras

Le Rusthe is blessed with rustic charm and character but with the holiday comforts that make a house a home. Literally, set amidst vineyards and sunflower fields, with views that stretch for miles, privacy and peace will only be interrupted by the sounds coming from the 12 x 6m pool !

A great success in 2015 has been the addition of table football, a dart board, a 50" TV screen, and the biggest leather sofa you have ever seen - all upstairs in the 'grenier' - a great haven for teenagers !

About Nick Loxton

We bought "Le Rusthe" in 1990 after getting to know the Lot-et-Garonne well in the previous few years. We live in Bath, are self-employed with a business based in London, and we have a teenage son who has spent every summer at "Rooster" since he was born.

Nick Loxton purchased this farmhouse in 1990

Why Nick Loxton chose Lot-et-Garonne

Nick spent several summers during his teenage years helping to restore a farmhouse not far from Le Rusthe. When he introduced Sara to the area a few years later, she agreed that it was a great area to start looking for a project ! 25 years later, Le Rusthe has been transformed in to a comfortable but rustic holiday home, with the character of the house preserved, but with modern comforts and necessities added.

Le Rusthe is close to the busy towns of Eymet, Duras and Miramont, but far enough away from all of them to offer, peace and privacy.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Le Rusthe is very well placed for access to two of the football European Cup 2016 venues - Toulouse and Bordeaux. Perhaps your favourite team will be playing in both cities !

We enjoy walks and bike rides from Le Rusthe , perhaps up to Soumensac for the wonderful summer Sunday lunches, or to the enormous Lac de L'Escarou, a couple of km's to the east.

The golf and country club at Chateau des Vigiers is about a 20 minute drive, and there are weekly markets in Eymet and Duras that are fun to visit.

The airport at Bergerac is only 30km, and the town itself, perched on the edge of the Dordogne river, is well worth a trip, as are the canoe stations a little further east - the trip through the steep gorges at Beynac and Castelnaud being a particular family favourite.

We always make a trip to the fabulous beaches on the Atlantic coast at Cap Ferret, and to climb the huge dune at Arcachon, followed by oysters on the edge of the 'bassin' !

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to say thank you to you for all your help leading up to our stay. We found the property really easily and completely loved it. It is so beautiful - I love the way you have furnished and done it all - and it was so well set up and perfect for us all, including all the kids (and the big kids, i.e. adults, who probably had as much fun up in the games room as the kids had once the kids had gone to bed!) We also followed lots of your tips about things to do and really enjoyed everything. Thanks again for all your help and for the stay.

Outside: The house is approached from a very large gravelled area with parking for lots of cars, including a couple of covered spaces beneath the ancient 'garage'.Large terrace immediately outside of the kitchen door with fab open outlook across the vines and large dining table that can be used beneath the covered area or in the sunshine. When the sun is shining, lunchtime is always warm in this sheltered area - any time of year ! Approximately 3/4 of an acre of gardens and a large (12 x 6m) swimming pool with terracotta tiled and wooden boarded surrounds. Secure gates at either end to prevent access by small children, although supervision is recommended at all times. Plenty of flat, grassy space for ball games (careful though - a hard hit or kick and you ball will be in the vines !). Highly recommended is night-time star-gazing from the terrace or the garden when planets, satellites and 'shooters' can be seen Utility Room: Utility area near the 2 main bathrooms with washing machine and ironing facilities. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included (saves on suitcase space on budget flights !). Cleaning and towel/linen change generally weekly. Other: Very large 'grenier' upstairs with an enormous leather sofa, television/Playstation 3 inc. a selection of games/DVDs, table tennis table, 'Babyfoot' table football, and dart board. Great chill out zone for teenagers or all the family if it rains !

Gorgeous property in a great location, can't recommend highly enough

  • 5 of 5

We really loved this property - which in my view is even more beautiful than in the pictures. It is beautifully furnished, a real quintessential French farmhouse, but also contains so many useful additions to ensure you've everything you need for a great holiday (really well stocked kitchen, loads of games and books and things to do, etc). We stayed as a couple of families with kids and the set-up was really great for them, with the pool and the games room keeping the kids very happy and occupied! The surrounding area is very pretty and there's lots of things to do nearby (or else you can just stay at home and relax and enjoy the property). The hosts were extremely helpful, always very prompt in responding to questions and providing lots of useful tips on things to do once you're there.

A fabulous holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a week at Le Rusthe. We were a party of 6 adults and 4 children. We have had the most fabulous time. The house was equipped with everything that we could possibly need. The rooms, full of character , have been lovingly decorated and furnished. It is difficult to describe adequately the complete tranquility of sitting on the terrace with early morning coffee to hand, fields of vines and sunflowers stretching towards the woods across the valley and feeling restored and relaxed. The pool and garden were adored by all and the games room was a huge hit with the teenagers.

We loved exploring the local area and returned home with many bottles from La Brossiere thanks to an impromptu degustation hosted by the very kind owner. The pizzeria in Eymet was a highlight; fantastic food, location and amazing service. We canoed at Allemans as it was too hot to drive to the popular spots along the Dordogne and visited the Thursday market in Monpazier which filled the square and surrounding streets. A day trip to St Emilion and an exploration of the surrounding vineyards was well worth the drive . We found the Hyper market on the outskirts of St Foy really useful for stocking up and the boulangerie in Sauvetat convenient for bread ; the pain au chocolate and croissants were the biggest that we had ever seen but you need to get there early ! We really enjoyed the Sunday lunch at Soumensac , sat under the lime trees.... We even persuaded some of the children to try snails. Some of our party flew in and out from Bergerac which was a very straightforward 30 minute drive, whilst others had taken the train from Paris , also a straightforward pick up. Thank you for enabling us to have a holiday that surpassed our expectations in every respect.

Idyllic French Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a glorious week’s holiday at Le Rusthe. What a magical place! Surrounded by sunflowers and vines, the view stretches over woods and fields, with spectacular sunsets reflected in the large swimming pool. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, and have blissfully comfortable beds. The ancient stone walls and painted wooden shutters keep the house cool even on the hottest days, and the hilltop location means there is always a gentle breeze – better than any air-conditioning!

The kitchen, with original beams and fireplace (complete with rocking chairs!) is huge and fully-equipped, and we ate outside every day on the veranda, where there is a second large table. The 2 new bathrooms are huge and have great showers, and it is useful having a 3rd bathroom not far from the pool.

There is so much to see and do, we feel we have only just started to explore the area and will certainly be coming back again – from the delicious Sunday lunch at Soumensac, just a walk away through the vines, to the lovely market and castle in Duras, or the epic Pizzeria in Eymet… not to mention the amazing white wine from Domaine D’Eybro – head from Soumensac towards Eymet, and turn right when you get to the lake.

The children loved the pool, and the games room upstairs was ideal, with hilarious games of table tennis and table football, as well as the vast sofa which seats an entire family – the massive screen was very popular for playing racing games on the PS3!

We would strongly recommend Le Rusthe for family holidays, as there is something for everyone – we will be back!

Peaceful France

  • 4 of 5

We spent an enjoyable week in this spacious farmhouse. We were a party of 7 adults and two children aged 1 and 4 years. The house is in a nice elevated position with rural views including vineyards. The bedrooms are light, attractive and roomy. All the accommodation is on one level which is good when there are young children. The kitchen/dining and living area is all one room. There was space for everyone to eat although the room was rather dark and there are no sofas. As we had fine weather we ate outside so this was not a big issue.

The pool is a good size and is protected by a gate. Our little ones did soon work out how to open it though, so we had to be vigilant. There are some loungers and a table and chairs which was nice place for aperitifs. There is no shade or parasols near the pool. The two shower rooms are very new and efficient.

Possible downsides. There is no wifi (which could be an advantage) and no landline. The furniture and fixtures are quite old which made us rather nervous about getting our deposit back. However we only had a couple of minor breakages so no problem in getting a swift return of the £300. There is no Boulangerie in Soumensacc and the one in St Jean de duras has very limited opening hours and only sell bread.

The Soumensac Sunday lunch was good and usefully timed for the day after arrival. If you want a table get there early. The walk from the house is lovely. We also enjoyed the gourmand evening held on Fridays during August in nearby La Sauvetat-du-dropt. This saved cooking on our last evening.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the trouble to write a review of your stay at Le Rusthe ! We have had a successful and enjoyable first season registered with "Owners Direct", and we intend to build on this by making the necessary adjustments to make 2015 even better ! We do have the kitchen set up for cooking and dining, and for post-prandial board games and cards, but we take note of your suggestion of a sofa area, so, for 2015, there will be a large leather sofa upstairs in the television/games room. The pool gate is the French regulation recommended 'child proof' item, but we will look in to making this more secure, although there is no substitute for vigilance in case someone props it open or doesn't close it properly. It may be that a guest from the week before you arrived put away the parasol that normally slots in to the 'aperitif' table by the pool, so I am sorry that wasn't where it should have been. We are considering wifi for 2015, although I must admit are torn between having all mod cons and instant communication with home, work etc. or enjoying the 'away from it all' tranquility of the French countryside !
