About the Owner

I live in Hertfordshire, England with my husband and two children. The cottage was refurbished as our second home and, as such, is fitted to an excellent standard. We bought the cottage after being frequent visitors to Eye for many years and used to spend much of our spare time there. My husband and I both work together in our family run business and sadly find that we have less and less spare time with the demands of our family and expanding business, so we've decided to let our cottage for others to enjoy it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

An extremely comfortable and very well equipped cottage. It has the feel of someone's home rather than the minimal equipment often found in holiday rentals. Plenty of space for 2 people. We used it as a base for a week's walking holiday in Suffolk/Norfolk. Although in Suffolk it is close to the border with Norfolk so possible to visit both counties. The house is close to local shops and the village pub is only a couple of minutes walk away. We ate there twice and found it welcoming with excellent pub food. A side table in the sitting room would be helpful.

Immaculate cottage in a beautiful little village

  • 5 of 5

Wow - this has to be the most immaculately clean cottage ever - everything was perfect from the moment we opened the door. Being over 6 foot tall I am somewhat suspect at some cottages but didn't need to worry with Orange Grove cottage - plenty of ceiling space and good width staircase, in this deceptively large cottage. Th lounge had a very comfortable couch, greta for relaxing, plenty of room around the spacious dining table, and the kitchen was a delight, large range and plenty of space, including a very large fridge. Upstairs was two generous bedrooms and a good size bathroom. Only issue was having to get into bath to have a shower with a bad back, but this a minor issue.

Eye itself is a lovely quaint village with some lovely little shops, plenty to choose from for meals. It also is a great place from which to explore Norfolk and the surrounding areas. The owners also provide plenty of suggestions of where to go, especially those with kids.

Overall this was definitely one of the best cottages we have ever stayed at, and we will definitely try to get back here sometime in the future. If considering a place in Norfolk, this is one cottage well worth considering!

A lovely cottage in an excellent location. Good selection of shops in Eye and enjoyed a meal at the village pub. Would recommend to others.

Relaxing in Eye

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was in a lovely location in the village, very peaceful and relaxing. It was easy to get out and about the local area. Parking on the street is a little difficult but there is a public car park very close to the cottage. The cottage itself was exactly as it was advertised and was a welcome place to come home to at the end of day. The only disappointment was there is no outside space to enjoy. The local public house cuisine and atmosphere was excellent. We would recommend you visiting this cottage and there is plenty to see and do in the local area.

Well equipped, well looked after, well situated

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was every bit as good as it sounded. Equipped and maintained to a high standard and both comfortable and warm. Spotlessly clean which made it easy to keep clean. Loved being able to decide what we wanted for breakfast and to nip to the bakery (superb), butchers (excellent) and the coop (well its a coop with friendly staff) all within a 5 minute round trip. Local Queens Head pub provide very good food, friendly service. Need to book as early as you can for Sunday lunch as they get busy. Loads of scope for local travel but the Thornham walks and a good wander by the Pinnings or Abbey House can provide a healthy burst of fresh air on your doorstep. We loved our stay (visiting our daughter nearby) and the cottage provided the perfect venue. Would thoroughly recommend this for a relaxing stay.

Cosy cottage

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful, cosy cottage in the heart of Eye. Great location to explore Eye Castle and Church.

Cottage was very clean and comfortable...fully equipped kitchen.

Sarah was on hand to answer any questions, and text us to make sure everything was ok with cottage.

Day trip to Aldeburgh recommended (about a 45 minute drive)...best fish and chips I've had in a long time!

Orange grove colttage, Eye< Suffolk.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very well equipped for a self catering break. It is really well cared for and exceptionally clean - initially a little daunting for two old age pensioners who are not very tidy at home!- but in retrospect was a good week of self discipline for us.

The owner, Sarah, was very attentive to our requests for the central heating to be adjusted and consequently we were very comfortable.I would have no hesitation in recommending this holiday home for a visit to Suffolk and the surrounding area and its tourist attractions. One could visit Minsmere RSPB reserve,Thetford forest, Sutton Hoo and locally walking in the forest at Thornham walks is a very peaceful outing. If you want retail therapy the cities of Norwich and Ipswich are an easy drive. Bury st Edmonds is also an interesting town to visit.

The coastal towns Aldeburgh and Southwold are an easy drive and quaint seaside towns.

All in all a good holiday destination.

Location

From the Owner

We've always loved Eye since our very first visit some twenty years back and it will always have a place deep in our hearts. We felt so at home in Suffolk that we even chose to get married in Eye some twelve years ago (despite all of our family and friends living in London and Herts). It's a fantastic base for exploring East Anglia and there are so very many interesting places to visit locally and further afield.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Recommended beaches :

Adleburgh – well renowned for serving the UK's best fish and chips

Gorleston – great for children with a lovely long golden sandy beech with children's paddling pool set on the beech itself

Great Yarmouth – lovely beeches, donkey rides, amusement parks

Southworld

Thorpeness

Distances:

Situated within the heart of the Conservation Village being almost equidistant to Norwich, the coast (Southwold and Aldeburgh), Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and all of the beautiful villages and towns in between.

Eye has a great variety of shops including a bakers, TWO butchers, TWO Co Ops, a newsagents, a deli, a pub (The Queens Head), a hardware store, various antique and gift shops, beauty salon, hairdressers, post office, restaurants and cafes/tea rooms.

Further Details:

The nearest 'big' town is Diss, just over the Suffolk/Norfolk border (5-10 minutes by car). Diss has a bustling pedestrianised quaint high street with shops such as Boots, Tesco, Costa Coffee, Co Op and a large number of wonderful independent shops (Carnells the butchers is highly recommended!).

You will also find a great park in Diss for the children with a large play area and stunning Mere, a big soft play centre (Monsters) and a swimming pool.

Thornham Country Park is just 5 minutes by car and has approximately 12 miles of marked footpaths on the Thornham Estate and offers some surfaced paths, suitable for push chairs and wheel chairs, which leads for half a mile to the Thornham Walled Garden and takes walkers past birds hides, a pets cemetery, along the Thornham Rock Trail to the Victorian Foll. There is a cosy tea room at one end together with a children's play and picnic area and a restaurant at the other end.

The Ruins of Eye Castle in Castle Street is less than 5 mins walk from the cottage (seasonal opening)

Eye has its own equestrian centre who are happy to arrange lessons for complete beginners right through to advanced riders.

Banham Zoo sits just outside Diss and also makes a great day out for the little ones.

Many people also enjoy visiting Bressingham Steam & Gardens which is located just a little west of Diss. The cottage is is also well positioned for access by car for Thetford Forest, Newmarket, The River Deben and The Norfolk Broads.

The Norfolk Broads makes a truly lovely day out and is recommended for all ages, lots of places to eat overlooking the water and boats for hire.

Thetford Forest is home to 'Go Ape' and is also a super place for walking, cycling (bike hire available), playing, picnic's and simply enjoying the natural beauty of the forest and all it has to offer.
