Country Retreat For Two People

Updated: 19-May-2015
Lodge in Great Elm, Nr. Frome, Somerset, England - It Is A Peaceful Location But Not To Far From Amenities Although Transport Would Be An Advantage

The Lodge is perfect for a few days getaway if you want peace and quiet. It has wonderful walks with woods in the village. There is a cycle track that runs along near the farm. There is fishing on the river at Great Elm and Mells.

The Lodge is built with Green Oak and is a beautiful building with underfloor heating and hot water powered from the hidden solar panels. We also have our own water hole on the farm.

The lodge building and interior is based on nature and upstairs in the seating area of the bedroom are two comfortable chairs with room to put your feet up and relax and watch the sunset over the rolling Somerset countryside.

It is also based on comfort with soft fluffy towels and white company sheets .

About the Owner

I live in a pretty village in Somerset and have a farm with mainly dressage horses but also chickens, pigs and sheep. I used to be an Interior Designer and have used this experience to decorate my little retreat for guests to stay on the farm. We have our own eggs and own meat and like to be as self sufficient as possible.

Fantastic Short break

  • 5 of 5

A lovely spot - Barn was clean and beautiful , great views from the upstairs lounge area . Straight from the front door a Lovely walk along the river to Mells which is very quaint with a great garden cafe . We also visited Wells which is nearby and is a stunning town . Couldn't ask for anything more , Sarah has thought of everything . Enjoyed feeding the chickens from the kitchen window , as said Rooster did like to wake us up but it is so tranquil here it was lovely to just let the sounds of the countryside just wash over you .

Can't recommend enough

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a weekend here.. Sarah gave us a warm welcome and there were fresh goodies (eggs, bread, milk etc..) on arrival which is a really lovely touch. I also arranged with Sarah for a cake to be made as we were there as part of my other halfs Birthday - it was delicious.

The barn is absolutely stunning. Beautiful throughout, comfortable, modern and cosy. We done some exploring (including Bath and Cheddar) but mainly we just wanted to sit upstairs in the chairs looking over the view and relaxing.

The kitchen has plenty of utensils etc if you want to stay in and cook, the living room area is comfortable, we couldn't get the tv channels to work but watched one of the many DVDs available and listened to the DAB radio. The shower was nice and powerful and the large bed was very comfy too with high quality bedding.

Our only minor complaint (other than only booking 2 nights!) is that because we sleep with the window open, we were woken by the rooster at 5.30am ish which is a little before we'd usually want to wake up but it wouldn't stop us from returning - I can't recommend this place enough and we'd definitely love to return.

Thank you from Tiffany and Aaron x

We have just returned from a two night break and we now feel totally rejuvenated. Sarah was so helpful and gave us a great welcome with extra treats of bread, tea, fresh coffee and biscuits!

We loved the peace and quiet in such a stunning property.

Highly recommend it!

Arrived to a very warm, cosy and beautiful lodge with complementary eggs, bread, milk, tea and coffee - lovely touch! Pictures do not so this property justice! Very spacious and extremely clean - Contains everything you could need.

We loved watching the cows pass the lodge in the mornings and the wake up call from the rooster. Private courtyard where we sat in the mornings for breakfast. Definitely recommend staying here. Perfect location for visiting Bath and Longleat. A big thank you to Sarah who was very welcoming and helpful :)

A hidden gem in beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

The Lodge exceeded our expectations, and with a wonderfully warm welcome (and floor!), freshly laid eggs, bread, butter, tea etc to start us off not even a bit of rain dimmed our enjoyment of our trip to Somerset. The Lodge was immaculately clean, the bed fabulously large but snug at the same time. The views over the surrounding fields were amazing and the twice daily flyby by the local farmers cows going to and from their grazing field was a sheer delight for us city dwellers. It's funny how having a cow look inquisitively at you and wonder what you're doing makes you smile!!. An ideal base for exploring the surrounding area, Bath, Frome, Wells and Cheddar are a must. The Talbot Inn in nearby Mells is beautiful to look at and does great food. We had a really wonderful relaxing time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Lodge.

From the Owner

I love this part of Somerset as it is so beautiful. It is close enough to Bath and Salisbury for anything needed in the city. Frome the local town just 3 miles away is very alternative with local markets on certain days of the month. It is full of unusual vintage and interesting shops and cafe's In our lovely village of Great Elm we have fantastic woods to explore full of wildlife some fabulous scenery where an old railway track has been turned into a cycle track. We are on the boarders of Wiltshire and Dorset two other beautiful counties. We are about a mile from the village of Mells which is also very pretty. It has all our local amenities, a postoffice with an Internet cafe, a walled garden to explore serving coffee, homemade cakes and light lunches and a lovely 16th century coaching Inn fabulous for dinner.

From the Owner

The property is called the lodge and is a beautiful self-catering barn building with lovely rustic beams. It is a real country retreat for a couple who want to get away for a few days from the stresses and strains of a busy life. We offer our own eggs and at certain times of the year our own meat.
