About the property

Set In A Very Quiet Location - Easy Access To Dorchester & The Jurassic Coast

Wren Cottage is a modern detached house offers a very well equipped centre for a holiday exploring all the wonders of West Dorset and is set on a hill to offer views of the local countryside from both bedrooms. The excellent Martyrs Inn is a short walk away but you will not be disturbed. You can also walk to the historic Martyrs Museum; a childrens' play area and; with a longer walk, to Athelhampton House and Gardens with tea room and restaurant. It is some 2 miles to Puddletown where there is a village shop with post office and butchers and 8 miles to the County Town of Dorchester with its cinema, leisure centre and museums. There is much to explore in the area including the Jurassic coast with Chesil beach, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove; Monkey World, the Tank Museum, Max Gate and Thomas Hardy's cottage to name but a few. Our visitors love this modern yet homely cottage with excellent facilities - we hope you will too! There is allocated off road parking for two cars in front of the cottage.

About Helen Frost

Alan and Helen love Dorset and love sharing their cottage with you as, cheesy though it sounds, if we can't be there all the time, we enjoy you enjoying being there! With effect from February 2014, our new blue roan cocker, Watson, enjoys Dorset too!

We have had a holiday rental cottage in Dorset since 2007.

You will find a good number of reviews on our service on this site and also on Trip Advisor under both West Lane Cottage Piddlehinton and Wren Cottage Tolpuddle.

Why Helen Frost chose Tolpuddle

We love the Piddle Valley - you are near to Dorchester and yet also close to both countryside and coast. There is so much to explore in the area and lots going on. From village fetes, to Farmer's Markets, Jousting at Lulworth Castle, feeding Monkeys at Monkey World, fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast or just walking with beautiful views - we truly believe that there is something for everyone in West Dorset. Despite this, you will not find it a crowded place - there is no motorway here and there is a slower pace of life.

What makes this house unique

Tolpuddle is well positioned to visit the whole county - Dorchester, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Weymouth, Swanage, Bournemouth and Poole, Bridport, Sandbanks, Corfe Castle, Cerne Abbas, Wimborne, Wareham and Blandford are all easily reached.

We feel that Wren Cottage offers a balance of modern fittings and décor in a rural setting - a peaceful location with views. Many visitors return so we can't be the only ones who love this part of the world!

Do have a look at our Visitor Comments.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A beautiful cottage - you literally have thought of everything - I particularly love your beautiful art work and pictures - it made it feel extremely homely. We also fell in love with your mattress!

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: We hope that we have thought of everything that you could need on holiday. We regularly visit ourselves so this is truly a "home from home" and not just a holiday let. The standard of furniture and equipment in the cottage is high (Neptune, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer). Great attention has been paid to "the little things" - from recipe books in the kitchen to a plug in revolving fan in the master bedroom for when it gets really hot in the summer! Some visitors have returned several times already and have recommended us to their friends. Outside: The rear garden is a particular feature of the cottage - it is private and enclosed and offers a pretty patio area and much planting to provide colour all year round. We have a table and chairs with parasol and a BBQ for you to use and a shed which you may use to store bicycles. A short walk will take you to the village pub and you can take various other walks from the cottage either to the Martyrs' Museum or perhaps a longer walk to Athelhampton House and Gardens. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage will be cleaned before you arrive and we provide all bed linen, hand and bath towels throughout together with tea towel & oven glove. There is washing up liquid and some dishwasher tabs. For longer stays, the cleaners will call each Friday. Other: There is a ground floor cloakroom.

Gorgeous cottage, well furnished and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Property very much as described, well equipped, well furnished and comfortable. The village is quiet, with a lovely dog friendly pub. The owners have left maps and lots of ideas for things to do, including walks. We would definitely recommend this cottage to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review Helen - from our email correspondence after your stay, it was particularly good to know that you enjoyed the maps and information about walks in particular and that you found the beds so comfortable. We too have stayed in cottages where they were not and it is very important! Thank you for your kind recommendation to others and we hope to hear from you again.

Peace wrapped up in a beautiful rural cottage ❤️

  • 5 of 5

Wren Cottage is deceiving to the eye for a two bed cottage. It feels far bigger when you’re inside - so much so my daughter wants a house like it now!! Pristine inside and out with everything you could possibly want. Bit weird having no Vodafone signal inside the house but good WiFi so my children’s lives could continue without spontaneous meltdowns over no internet!!!! We had to cut our stay short by a night but Helen was very gracious about us leaving early and understood our situation. We will absolutely be back at some point. Oh and the Martyrs Inn food was lovely! Thank you for a wonderful couple of days of relaxation and fresh country air.

Owner's Response: It's very kind of you to review Wren Cottage, Sarah, thank you. So glad you enjoyed it and only wish you could have stayed for the whole time you had hoped to. Sorry about the Vodaphone signal - Dorset is a bit of a black spot for some networks I'm afraid but at least the wi-fi meant you could stay in touch with those you needed to. The Martyrs Inn are always happy to let you use their phone if you can't get a signal too. We hope to welcome you again at some point. Best wishes

Lovely cottage with everything you could possible need.

  • 5 of 5

Wren cottage is a home from home, fabulous accomodation with everything you could need from a coffee machine to dishwasher tablets!

Very well presented with a homely modern decor.

Great location for exploring Dorset.

Local pub, literally around the corner, a warm welcome with good ale and food.

Excellent communication with owners when needed, friendly and accommodating.

Owner's Response: We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your break at Wren Cottage and that you found it a great base for discovering the many delights of West Dorset. We do try to provide all home comforts and we like a nice coffee in the mornings! The Martyrs Inn is very handy isn't it - we were a little nervous at first that it might be noisy but we never hear anything despite its close proximity. You'd be very welcome to return!

Lovely few days here!

  • 5 of 5

Great location for visiting the Dorset coast & area in general. We had dry weather and even sunshine so did fabulous walks along front at Weymouth, Branscombe and Swanage. Cottage was great for us with everything we needed, garden was particularly good for the dog - secure and hardstanding! Would definitely recommend a stay here, locals we met in the pub were very friendly too!

Owner's Response: It is always good to hear from our holidaymakers and to know that they enjoyed the cottage and Dorset scenery as much as we do! As you discovered, there are some fabulous walks to be had along the coast and many are dog friendly. So nice to hear that you would recommend us and that the cottage had all that you needed, including a safe and secure dog friendly garden - not something easily found! Thank you for persevering to get your review posted.

Super Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Originally booked to stay at the owners cottage in Piddlehinton but due to an unavoidable problem at the cottage I was offered Wren Cottage for my stay.

Great property with everything you could possibly need. Quiet with very comfortable beds and two bathrooms was a bonus with excellent shower. Lovely garden too.

Kitchen has everything you need too and of a good size.

Lovely location and loads of places to visit nearby. Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door well worth a visit and Abbotsbury Gardens were lovely. Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum just up the road and very interesting. Hardys cottage interesting and great cafe at Thorncombe woods nearby.

Martyrs Inn serves excellent food and the Sunday lunch is a must.

Very dog friendly and my dog Murphy had a great time as there are lots of walks nearby and Puddletown Forest is just a short drive away.

The owners Helen and Alan are superb! Great at sorting my stay at Wren Cottage when I was unable to stay at the cottage I had booked with them in Piddlehinton and they even left credit for me at the Martyrs Inn due to the change in cottages which was very kind and above my expectations.

Would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone for a stay in Dorset as it is so close to places to visit and so comfortable to come back to.

Would definitely return

Many Thanks

Owner's Response: We were so sorry to have to move you from West Lane to Wren Cottage due to a leaking water tank. Although we were lucky enough to get a plumber out within 20 minutes of discovering the problem, he was unable to fix it in time for you to stay and the job was completed later that week. It was great to read that you enjoyed our cottage in Tolpuddle and the West Dorset region in general. Thank you for all your kind comments and for telling us about the Under The Greenwood Tree café at Higher Bockhampton. Good too to hear about the Martrys Museum and pub which are both very close to the cottage. While you were at the Martyrs Inn on Sunday, we were having a roast at Athelhampton House so I am sure both meals were equally good! Murphy, like Watson, enjoys Dorset because, as you say, there are lots of walks to be had and I must say that the oilseed rape makes a big difference to the scenery at this time of year - I have posted some photographs on facebook! It is very nice to know that you "Would definitely return" - at least you know that West Lane Cottage now has a brand new water tank!

What a gem!

  • 5 of 5

Wren Cottage is a beautiful holiday home! So clean and comfortable. Has everything you could need. Its so well decorated and obviously has been done with real care and to a high spec. I really didn't want to come home.

From the first enquiry Helen was so lovely to deal with and so professional. Great customer service, great booking system. Incredibly detailed information. A joy to deal with.

There is so much to see and do in Dorset. We visited Monkey World, Swanage, Chesil Beach and Dorchester.

Cant wait to return next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Wren Cottage. We are glad you found it clean and comfortable with everything you could need. It has just been redecorated with Dorset based Farrow & Ball of course and the Neptune furniture was also locally supplied. It's good to hear that you found dealing direct with the owner worthwhile - I think the owner is often best placed to advise on local attractions and so on and it is so much easier to liaise one to one rather than through an agency. As you say, there is much to visit in the area - I have no doubt you will find more attractions when you return next year - Corfe beckons as does Cerne Abbas, Kimmeridge, West Bay and Bridport to name just a few!
