Overview

Property

Updated: 25-Nov-2016
Set In A Very Quiet Location - Easy Access To Dorchester & The Jurassic Coast

Wren Cottage is a modern detached house offers a very well equipped centre for a holiday exploring all the wonders of West Dorset and is set on a hill to offer views of the local countryside from both bedrooms. The excellent Martyrs Inn is a short walk away but you will not be disturbed. You can also walk to the historic Martyrs Museum; a childrens' play area and; with a longer walk, to Athelhampton House and Gardens with tea room and restaurant. It is some 2 miles to Puddletown where there is a village shop with post office and butchers and 8 miles to the County Town of Dorchester with its cinema, leisure centre and museums. There is much to explore in the area including the Jurassic coast with Chesil beach, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove; Monkey World, the Tank Museum, Max Gate and Thomas Hardy's cottage to name but a few. Our visitors love this modern yet homely cottage with excellent facilities - we hope you will too! There is allocated off road parking for two cars in front of the cottage.

About the Owner

Alan and Helen love Dorset and love sharing their cottage with you as, cheesy though it sounds, if we can't be there all the time, we enjoy you enjoying being there! With effect from February 2014, our new blue roan cocker, Watson, enjoys Dorset too!

We have had a holiday rental cottage in Dorset since 2007.

You will find a good number of reviews on our service on this site and also on Trip Advisor under both West Lane Cottage Piddlehinton and Wren Cottage Tolpuddle.

A beautiful cottage - you literally have thought of everything - I particularly love your beautiful art work and pictures - it made it feel extremely homely. We also fell in love with your mattress!

Super Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Originally booked to stay at the owners cottage in Piddlehinton but due to an unavoidable problem at the cottage I was offered Wren Cottage for my stay.

Great property with everything you could possibly need. Quiet with very comfortable beds and two bathrooms was a bonus with excellent shower. Lovely garden too.

Kitchen has everything you need too and of a good size.

Lovely location and loads of places to visit nearby. Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door well worth a visit and Abbotsbury Gardens were lovely. Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum just up the road and very interesting. Hardys cottage interesting and great cafe at Thorncombe woods nearby.

Martyrs Inn serves excellent food and the Sunday lunch is a must.

Very dog friendly and my dog Murphy had a great time as there are lots of walks nearby and Puddletown Forest is just a short drive away.

The owners Helen and Alan are superb! Great at sorting my stay at Wren Cottage when I was unable to stay at the cottage I had booked with them in Piddlehinton and they even left credit for me at the Martyrs Inn due to the change in cottages which was very kind and above my expectations.

Would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone for a stay in Dorset as it is so close to places to visit and so comfortable to come back to.

Would definitely return

Many Thanks

Owner's Response: We were so sorry to have to move you from West Lane to Wren Cottage due to a leaking water tank. Although we were lucky enough to get a plumber out within 20 minutes of discovering the problem, he was unable to fix it in time for you to stay and the job was completed later that week. It was great to read that you enjoyed our cottage in Tolpuddle and the West Dorset region in general. Thank you for all your kind comments and for telling us about the Under The Greenwood Tree café at Higher Bockhampton. Good too to hear about the Martrys Museum and pub which are both very close to the cottage. While you were at the Martyrs Inn on Sunday, we were having a roast at Athelhampton House so I am sure both meals were equally good! Murphy, like Watson, enjoys Dorset because, as you say, there are lots of walks to be had and I must say that the oilseed rape makes a big difference to the scenery at this time of year - I have posted some photographs on facebook! It is very nice to know that you "Would definitely return" - at least you know that West Lane Cottage now has a brand new water tank!

What a gem!

Wren Cottage is a beautiful holiday home! So clean and comfortable. Has everything you could need. Its so well decorated and obviously has been done with real care and to a high spec. I really didn't want to come home.

From the first enquiry Helen was so lovely to deal with and so professional. Great customer service, great booking system. Incredibly detailed information. A joy to deal with.

There is so much to see and do in Dorset. We visited Monkey World, Swanage, Chesil Beach and Dorchester.

Cant wait to return next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Wren Cottage. We are glad you found it clean and comfortable with everything you could need. It has just been redecorated with Dorset based Farrow & Ball of course and the Neptune furniture was also locally supplied. It's good to hear that you found dealing direct with the owner worthwhile - I think the owner is often best placed to advise on local attractions and so on and it is so much easier to liaise one to one rather than through an agency. As you say, there is much to visit in the area - I have no doubt you will find more attractions when you return next year - Corfe beckons as does Cerne Abbas, Kimmeridge, West Bay and Bridport to name just a few!

Great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Arrived at Wren Cottage which was absolutely spotlessly clean. All mod cons were available to use and quickly got associated with connecting to the internet. Ample parking and a lovely village. Although it was winter time, it was great to have access to a garden. Very comfortable accommodation and nice and warm. All amenities were very adequate. We found the village very nice to walk our dog. Would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: First impressions are always really important and the fact that you say Wren Cottage was absolutely spotlessly clean is fantastic and I will pass this on to our cleaner. We treat the cottage as our own home and do try to provide everything that you could need to have a good stay - we have always stayed in self catering holidays ourselves so have good experience to help us judge what you need. These days internet falls into this category! Having two parking spaces is useful for when we have four guests to stay and being just outside the house means you can keep an eye - not that much goes wrong in this village as you can imagine. Despite the season, it has been very mild and I am glad that the garden came into use. I am sure that, like us, you find Dorset to be a very dog friendly county. Thank you for your review and recommendation - we hope you return another time to continue your exploration of the lovely area.

Cosy cottage in quiet location

  • 5 of 5

Wren cottage is well maintained and contained all we needed for our holiday. Helen, the owner was very helpful giving us details of what's on and dog friendly walks etc. The property is in the quiet village of Tolpuddle very near the Martyr's Inn which we visited for dinner on a couple of occasions, very good food and the added bonus of a discount if staying in the cottage! Near to Dorchester, Maiden Castle, Lyme Regis, West Bay, Hardy's Cottage and many other places of interest.

Can highly recommend a stay here.

Owner's Response: It is great to hear that you can highly recommend Wren cottage. We do aim to provide all that you might need including plenty of tourist information, maps, guide books and up to date information about what is doing on in the area during your stay. The discount scheme with Athelhampton House and the Martyrs Inn is a little bonus! As you say there is much to do and visit in the area and we find that many people return to visit some of the places they did not get round to on their first stay. Corfe Castle, Cerne Abbas, Sherborne, Old Harry's Rocks and of course Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door all appeal and I always love a visit to Bridport and West Bay. We aim to move to this part of Dorset ourselves when we can - can't wait!

Perfect, home from home.

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I had the perfect holiday in this lovely cottage, peaceful, beautiful scenery, so much to visit. Everything you could think of was supplied by Helen and Alan. Shower was lovely plus extra bathroom and a downstairs toilet. Kitchen was equipped with everything you needed and more. We can not fault this cottage at all. Will certainly want to go again.

Owner's Response: What a lovely review - thank you! We have tried hard to "supply everything you could think of" but the peace and beautiful scenery was supplied by the Piddle Valley and Tolpuddle! As you say, there is so much to visit in the area and we find people return every year, some come more than once a year! We hope to welcome you back some time. The cottage is being decorated throughout in December so will be lovely and "new" for Christmas visitors, who will, I am sure, enjoy spending time there.

A beautiful cottage inn a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautifully decorated, well-equipped,

cottage. It is ideally situated for exploring Dorset and there was so much to do that we ran out of time to do it all. Helen, the owner, has thought of everything visitors might need and was most helpful. We would love to return in the future.

Owner's Response: We have been staying at self catering cottages ourselves for many years so feel that we know what visitors look for in a holiday home. Thank you for confirming this! We love West Dorset and Tolpuddle provides a central base to explore both the countryside and the coast and, as you say, there is an awful lot to do in the area. We find that visitors return again and again and we hope you will too!

Location

From the Owner

We love the Piddle Valley - you are near to Dorchester and yet also close to both countryside and coast. There is so much to explore in the area and lots going on. From village fetes, to Farmer's Markets, Jousting at Lulworth Castle, feeding Monkeys at Monkey World, fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast or just walking with beautiful views - we truly believe that there is something for everyone in West Dorset. Despite this, you will not find it a crowded place - there is no motorway here and there is a slower pace of life.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: We hope that we have thought of everything that you could need on holiday. We regularly visit ourselves so this is truly a "home from home" and not just a holiday let. The standard of furniture and equipment in the cottage is high (Neptune, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer). Great attention has been paid to "the little things" - from recipe books in the kitchen to a plug in revolving fan in the master bedroom for when it gets really hot in the summer! Some visitors have returned several times already and have recommended us to their friends. Outside: The rear garden is a particular feature of the cottage - it is private and enclosed and offers a pretty patio area and much planting to provide colour all year round. We have a table and chairs with parasol and a BBQ for you to use and a shed which you may use to store bicycles. A short walk will take you to the village pub and you can take various other walks from the cottage either to the Martyrs' Museum or perhaps a longer walk to Athelhampton House and Gardens. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage will be cleaned before you arrive and we provide all bed linen, hand and bath towels throughout together with tea towel & oven glove. There is washing up liquid and some dishwasher tabs. For longer stays, the cleaners will call each Friday. Other: There is a ground floor cloakroom.
