About the property

St. Grave, Morbihan, Brittany, France (close to Rochefort-en Terre) - Calm Retreat, amid beautiful countryside, local walking and cycling. 30 mins to coast.

We consider Le Petit Perche to be a comfortable, well equipped and inviting property for the discerning visitor. It is located on the edge of a small village surrounded by stunning scenery ideal for walking and cycling; the Nantes-Brest canal is closeby as is the Voie Verte. There are several interesting places to see and to visit in the locality

It benefits from solar heated hot water, a rain harvesting system which services the toilets and the washing machine. There is a heat-exchange ventilation system and an efficient wood burning stove. There is a high level of insulation from ecological sources. There are two double bedrooms and a twin bedded room and a cot is available for a baby/small toddler. The living space is open plan comprising: a fitted kitchen with a dishwasher, electric oven and hob, a large fridge with a freezer compartment and ample food storage; a dining area with table and chairs for six people, a sideboard equipped for six people to eat and drink; and a large airy lounge which is furnished with ample seating, a television, DVD player and there is a box of games /books. This room faces south/south west and is always light and airy; it opens onto a gravelled terrace equipped with a picnic table and sun canopy, wooden garden funiture, sun loungers and a barbecue. The garden is mainly lawn at present, let's say it is a developing feature.

Old stonebuilt longere this is not; large, typically French house with a cellar? no BUT you will find modern, clean comfortable facilities in a pretty part of Morbihan, well worth a visit

Nearby are the beautiful Cites de Charactere of Rochefort- en-Terre and Malestroit. To the east the market town of Redon is an inland port which sits on the confluence of the canal and the river Vilaine.

About Rick and Fran Story

Rick and I retired from careers in education in 2005. We have lived in here since 2007 and love it. We love gardening and walking and have settled into the community well. I taught English in the local primary school until summer 2014 and was on the Governing Body for four years; I still help out occasionally.

Having helped to refurbish the bibliotheque (library) between 2010 and 2013; and helped relocate its venue I now volunteer once or twice a month as a librarian. It is great fun meeting library members, discussing the books they have read or might enjoy.

We both walk three or four time a week in the locality or along our beautiful coastline. We consider ourselves to be privileged living in such a beautiful part of the world.

Rick and Fran Story purchased this house in 2012

Why Rick and Fran Story chose Saint-Gravé

We built Le Petit Perche on the same plot as our own house so we are here for our guests. We are interested in the environment and have modified our own house somewhat. We decided to build a house with as many eco friendly features as possible, furnish and equip it to a very high standard and let it to people who have a similar interests in walking, outdoor life and the environment.

The property is easily accessed by road from.the main ports and there are airports at Nantes and Rennes(car hire essential). Although access is easy St Grave is a quiet, out of the way village. The house, however, is not "out in the sticks"; we are on the edge of the village, close to a bar/ restaurant and a boulangerie.

What makes this house unique

Le Petit Perche is set in the grounds of a larger, earlier built property in which we live. The garden of the property is delineated, but not fenced; guests are not directly overlooked by us or our neighbours. Guests may venture beyond the garden onto our plot whilst respecting our privacy. In season there may be crops available from the garden.

Out of season guests might be interested in the functioning of the eco features, perhaps with a view to incorporating similar into their own future projects.

There are numerous and varied restaurants in Rochefort-en-terre, Malestroit, La Gacilly and Peillac

Guestbook comments from the owner

I am French . I stay with Fran and Rick for three months. The house is lovely, I did not know the area, so pretty. I think you will enjoy your holidays in Le petit Perche.

Fran and Rick were always there to help if needed, and always discreet.

Thank you, Fran and Rick

Notes on accommodation: We pride ourselves on the standard of comfort and quality we have provided. Come and find out for yourselves. In the winter months (our low season) there may be a small charge for electricity; logs are provided for the wood burning stove. Outside: Le Petit Perche is on the same plot of land as that of the English owners but is discreetly screened to give privacy; the house has lawn all round, the garden is in process of development (my ongoing project) and there is a gravelled terrace area with garden furniture including lounging chairs and a picnic table with sun canopy. There is a Weber barbecue and outside lighting. Access to further garden space is at the discretion of the owners. Utility Room: The newly fitted utility room houses a sink unit and the washing machine, a small table top ironing board and iron; a vacuum cleaner, broom, etc It contains the solar heated hot water tank, a heat exchange ventilation system and the water recycling unit. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels are provided and the property is cleaned when guests leave. If guests stay more than one week fresh linen will be provided at the end of each week. Other: There are no other rooms but because the living room opens onto glorious space we feel this house provides the perfect setting for a wonderful, restful holiday; privacy, peace and calm.

An excellent bright and well furnished property with everything you could want for a holiday let.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely property, spacious and well furnished with everything you could need for a holiday let. The garden is beautiful and there is an ample supply of outdoor chairs and loungers. The owners, Fran and Rick, who live on site, are extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. They are a mine of information about the area and this helped us greatly. We would rate this property as outstanding.

Relaxing, comfortable eco house in a peaceful spot

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Le Petit Perche. The house is light airy and comfortable, and well equipped.

Saint-Grave is a quiet village in a great spot for exploring the Brittany coast, the Nantes-Brest Canal and lots of pretty and interesting towns and villages. We had a very relaxing holiday with fantastic weather.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, we are not responsible for the weather but the house is in such a pretty setting good weather does enhance its many attractive features. Take advantage of the maps and guides we provide, try our suggestions and you too could have a good holiday. It is really lovely to have guests make a second visit. It confirms for us that the service we provide is valuable.

Home away from home

We received a warm welcome to this lovely, clean eco house which had everything we could ever need. Bright, homely, immaculately clean and well located. Fran and Rick were really helpful and provided us with milk, juice, wine and home grown vegetables. Highly recommend this house and will definitely stay here again.

A relaxing and enjoyable holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a really enjoyable and relaxing holiday in Fran and Rick's Eco house. It was immaculate, light and airy, very comfortable, with plenty of space and storage, and had everything we needed. The terrace is the perfect spot to while away the time with a book and a glass of wine, and dinner outdoors in the evening with a view over Fran and Rick's much cared for garden was a delight.

We were very impressed with this beautiful area and the house is well placed to visit the coast and many interesting villages. We soon found our favourites - La Gacilly being one - and there are many excellent restaurants in the local villages. We also enjoyed some peaceful evening walks from the house.

Fran and Rick are such welcoming hosts without being intrusive. They have plenty of helpful tips and are happy to answer any questions you may have. We loved staying at Le Petit Perche and are sure that those who follow us will too. We are looking forward to returning - for longer next time!

... a memorable stay at Le Petit Perche

  • 5 of 5

We had a very lovely stay at Le Petit Perche. The accommodation is spacious, well kitted out and well maintained. Fran and Rick are very welcoming, thoughtful and helpful at all times. They are a credit to Owners Direct.

Saint-Gravé, France is well positioned for the archaeology around Carnac, and the beautiful coastline between Lorient and Saint-Nazaire.

Everything is close at hand, with a hypermarket with services at nearby Malansac. Quiet roads lead to picturesque local towns such as Vannes, Josselin, La Roche-Bernard and La Gacilly. We had plenty to see and do for a fortnight, without having to travel far each day.

The beaches between Lorient and Quiberon were some of the best we'd visited in Europe.

All-in-all, a brilliant stay. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Yet another very positive review. We work hard to maintain our standards and are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. We believe St Grave is ideally situated, placed almost in the centre of Morbihan, for a really good holiday with plenty of choice between coast and countryside; walking, cycling , swimming; with an abundance of chateaux, museums and tourist attractions. There is almost always something to do in the local vicinity according to the season, but should visitors choose to spend a day "at home" the house is a comfortable base in which to be relaxed and lazy. We are here to welcome visitors at almost any time of the year. Please note, not for the rest of October, 2016 nor for Christmas and New Year 2016/1017. Fran and Rick Story

We had a fantastic week exploring this part of Brittany. We loved everything about the eco house, and the owners were very welcoming and helpful. The beds were very comfortable, and the outdoor space was spacious and great for adults to relax, and children to play.

St.Grave is 30kms from the beach at Kervoyal/Damgan. There are beautiful stretches of beach, a coastal path which winds its way round the headland at Penerf giving wonderful views of the eastern Golfe, and a peek over hedges into wonderful gardens of privately owned holiday residences!

A perfect day out - walk, swim, picnic and there are always bars and seafront restaurants.

Further afield the whole south Brittany coast is stunning and waiting for you to visit.

Closest aiports are at Rennes (1hr.) Dinard (1Hr. 40) and Nantes 1hr. 50.

If travelling by plane car hire will be necessary.

Most convenient ferries are to St. Malo (2hrs.), Caen (3hrs.) and Roscoff 3hrs.) We can provide detailed directions to Le Petit Perche to supplement your GPS system

It is 5km to Malansac - the nearest supermarket.

The delightful town of Malestroit (market Thursday mornings) is 15kms away; there is a market in the town of Questembert 15kms.

The old town of Rochefort-en-terre is a mere 5 km. Stroll along its cobbled streets and admire the mediaeval architecture.

You will find a small artisanal town at La Gacilly, 10km and in summer there is a wonderful photo exhibition in the streets.

The cultural/commercial centre, Vannes, is a 45 min drive

Further Details:

The bread sold in L'Assiette Arrosee is wonderful. Sonia also sells newspapers, some groceries and local cheese; her espresso coffee or chilled rose wine are delicious after a local walk.

Next door to L'Assiette, Laurence and Dominique will welcome you warmly to Le Lion d'Or our very local, very French restaurant and Bar, open on weekday lunchtimes and on Sundays with a reservation.

On a Tuesday afternoon a local fruit and vegetable seller comes to the square outside the school and also a woman who makes crepes.

A pizza van comes early on a Wednesday evening to the same square. Order by phone and collect....scrummy!

There is a newsagent, butcher and baker at Malansac and a small, local market on a Saturday morning; there are also two banks. Just on the edge of the town is the nearest supermarket, open all day Mon - Sat (no lunchtime closure) and Sunday mornings; in the high season they have English displays and promotions in English. Some of the staff speak English.

In the direction of Redon you will find: Peillac, a rapidly developing artisanal town(look out for local exhibitions) with two or three very good restaurants; St Vincent, an expanding town with access to the Nantes-Brest canal for canoeing and other watersports and St Perreux a pretty canalside town. Redon itself is a bustling town with a fascinating Port and historic old town at the confluence of the canal and the river Vilaine.

There are markets at Malestroit (Thursday); at Questembert(Monday) and at La Gacilly(Saturday).
