About Raymond Turner

My wife and myself are still working though beyond retirement age! My wife as a Medical Secretary with the NHS, myself mainly as a membership consultant with the Federation of Small Businesses having a background with Esso Retail Marketing for over 30 years.

We have two daughters and two grand children all living close by and we see them often. There also three elderly cats in the family plus an elderly but fully restored Morris Minor convertible.

Raymond Turner purchased this villa in 2000

Why Raymond Turner chose Chania area

Friends we met during the '90's had fallen in love with Crete, searched the island for the ideal location to build their dream villa and the result is Villa Ionaida located in a beautiful valley close to an ancient Cretan village, Douliana. All essential facilities are in the nearest towns, Almerida, Kalives, and Vamos.

Although close to the nearest rustic Taverna just 140 metres away with delicious food, we have perfect peace and tranquility almost like being on your own island!

Those who have stayed return year after year.

What makes this villa unique

Villa Ionaida is unique in being surrounded by its own 2/3 acres of land with views to the sea and the White Mountains. It has an 'orchard garden' of nearly an acre with lemon, orange, apricot, bananas, almonds, fig trees and wild herbs in abundance and of course olive trees - even an ancient corn circle.

There is almost continuous bird song and the occasional sound of sheep bells and if you can tolerate this sound intrusion then Ionaida is for you!

We cannot keep away !!

  • 5 of 5

We have always resisted the temptation to return to a holiday destination until now. We have just booked our third visit to this idyllic villa. What is so special about this place?

We totally agree with all the comments made by the Williams Family review but would add things that we particularly like about the villa. The area around the villa feels unspoiled and contains several small villages with Tavernas and bars with a friendly atmosphere. Driving around the area is very easy and even a trip to the south of the island is a very pleasant and picturesque drive.

Having said this, our biggest problemwas tearing ourselves away from the villa.

The pool and area surrounding it are superb and the peace and seclusion would be difficult to surpass.

We found that a mix of eating at the villa and at the very friendly local taverna suited us perfectly.

We cannot wait to return.

A Little Piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Villa Ionaida is a little piece of heaven on the beautiful island of Crete.

Breathtaking views await you when you step out onto the balcony, especially in Springtime when the mountains are still covered with a blanket of snow. Often the only sounds to be heard are the buzzing of bees, birdsong and of course the sound of the greek sheep bells.

The villa is clean and very well equipped and help is always at hand if needed from David and Maria who live in the village and look after the property for the owners.

A hire car is a necessity especially for shopping trips but there are plenty of opportunities for walks from the villa if you don't want to venture far.

The nearby Taverna Douliana (5 mins walk from the villa) serves delicious Greek food as well as freshly made pizzas for the less adventurous.

The coastal resorts of Kalyves and Almyrida are very close if you fancy a meal and paddle. We found Almyrida to be the prettier option.

Ray was very helpful before our holiday at answering queries and providing very detailed instructions on how to reach the villa by car so we reached our destination feeling relaxed.

We enjoyed our stay enormously and really didn't want to leave so I anticipate a return visit in the not too distant future.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. On our own visits we strive to provide and improve the amenities of Ionaida so expect to see these in the future, and at the right time of year you may very well be able to enjoy the ripe fruit from the various banana, apricot, orange, lemon and other trees in the orchard garden. Best wishes.

Peace perfect peace

  • 5 of 5

This villa exceeded our expectations and the website cannot convey the tranquillity of the location. The pool is superb and the various balconies and paved areas gave plenty of options for dining or relaxing. The local taverna is within easy walking distance and we enjoyed visiting several times. The food is simple but very tasty and reasonably priced. David and Maria were readily available to answer any queries and did a great job of maintaining the villa. The biggest problem for us was tearing ourselves away to see more of Crete. We have taken relaxation to a new level. We have already booked again for next year.

Villa Ionadia

  • 5 of 5

Five of us spent a week over the Easter period at Villa Iondia. the villa is in a beautiful location on the outside of Douliana a hilltop Cretian Village. The villa is spacious and well equipped both inside and out, the grounds are lovely and cleary well cared for. The pool is great, if a little chilly in April, in the heat of the summer I am sure it is perfect. A very pretty walk to the beach at Almyredia take around half an hour, its ideal for those with teenagers who want a bit of independance without needing a car to ferry them placesand a stroll around the village is very worthwhile. Any advice? Though we felt safe at all times, we kept the annex door locked whilst we were in the house or by the pool, its very close but out of sight. Put half a dozen diswasher tablets in your case if you don't want to fork out 15 euro when you get there. I would recomend this villa to anyone looking for relaxation, privacy and a base to explore the north of Crete.
