Just what the doctor ordered

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful stay in Glenelg. Glenbeag cottage is by far the best cottage we have stayed in. Very comfortable and warm and all the mod cons we needed to make our stay perfect. There is a good information file, about the cottage and all things local. Glenbeag is close to the Inn and the local people are warm and friendly. The Inn serves up good food, as you are warmed by an open fire. The scenery in the area is stunning. Will be going back

Beautiful home from home, fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at Glenbeag Cottage with our two young children (6 months and 3 years). The property itself is very clean and tidy, with everything we could have needed for our stay. Rooms are decorated beautifully and it really does feel like a home from home.

The location is excellent. Beautiful scenery in all directions, quiet and remote - whilst close enough to the main roads that you can get further afield to Skye without much hassle. That said, there's loads to do on your doorstep, too. We particularly enjoyed Sandaig and the Brochs just up the road.

We had a fabulous time staying here and would highly recommend it.

Location

Special interest holidays:

Glenbeag Cottage is an ideal location for wildlife, beach, water or hill based holidays, as relaxed or active as you wish to be. It is in a stunning area that includes the site of Gavin Maxwell’s ‘Camusfearna’ at Sandaig with its white sand and coral beaches. Glenbeag has some of the best preserved Iron Age brochs. Close by are Munros including Beinn Sgritheall and the Five Sisters of Kintail, South GlenShiel ridge and Knoydart. And you may still ‘sail over the sea to Skye’ on the traditional Glenelg ferry crossing at Kylerhea. The local wildlife includes sea otters, white-tailed sea eagles, golden eagle, red deer and pine marten.

Coast/Beach:

The shore with views across The Sleet to Skye is one minutes walk away. There are two other pebble and sand beaches within 5 minutes walk and the huge sand beach at Bernera, on the way to the Glenelg Ferry, 20 minutes walk or 5 minutes drive away. There is a pier within 5 minutes walk. Boats and kayaks may also be launched from the beaches.

Travel:

From Inverness take the A82 south to Loch Ness. At Invermoriston turn right onto the A887 which joins the A87.

Or from Fort William take the A87 north turning left at Invergarry signposted to Kyle of Lochalsh. On A87 after passing the Cluanie Inn continue to Shiel Bridge. Immediately beyond the shop and service station turn left to Glenelg. Climb over the spectacular Mam Ratagan Pass, continuing down Glenmor to Glenelg.

Use of a car is essential though some people do cycle the Highlands.

Distances:

Glenelg is 20 miles south of Kyle of Lochalsh. Nearby are Eilean Donan Castle, Plockton, Loch Duich and Knoydart. The village is approached by the spectacular Mam Ratagan Pass from Shiel Bridge. A variety of sand or shingle beaches are from 1 to 20 minutes walk; protected bays and exposed rocky peninsulas abound. Wonderful wildlife includes the chance of seeing otters, eagles or a whale. Views of Skye are ever present and ever changing. Sunrises and sunsets are often amazingly colourful.

Further Details:

The Glenelg Shop is open Monday to Saturday and is remarkably well stocked with a variety of groceries, fruit & veg, bread & milk, and daily papers. The petrol station at Shiel Bridge also has a shop and small café, and there are several small grocery stores and a larger Co-op store in Kyle of Lochalsh.

Sheena’s Tea Hut in Corran is a must during the summer, and there is a yurt café open at the organic salad farm in Glenbeag, near the second Broch, Dun Telve.

There is a small gift shop in Glenelg main street, and souvenirs & postcards are sold at Glenelg Shop and at the Glenelg ferry jetty in the summer.

The Glenelg Inn has a great atmosphere, huge log fire, good bar meals as well as a lovely restaurant (please check opening in Winter).
