Beautiful Cotswold Thatched Bluebell Cottage Idyllic Village Near Legendary Pub

Overview

Property

Updated: 16-Nov-2016
Bluebell Cottage, Old Road, Great Tew, Oxfordshire Cotswolds - Wonderfully Appointed Cottage In A Unique, Peaceful Location With Unspoilt Views For Miles

Bluebell Cottage lies in the quiet and secluded village of Great Tew, well known for the legendary Falkland Arms pub. The village is at the end of a country road within the Great Tew Estate. This means that there is no through traffic and the only vehicles are those of residents and visitors. The cottage was built around 1850 from the local, golden Cotswold stone that is complemented by the beauty that only thatch can provide. Extensively modernised and updated, it now provides a luxurious, cosy hideaway furnished and equipped to a very high standard with full central heating and an open fire to keep you warm on even the coldest night. Uninterrupted views from the front of the cottage looking out across the beautiful Great Tew Estate are totally unique. There is even a wooden bench on the grass over the little lane for anyone that would like to sit and absorb the tranquility of the surroundings. Surprisingly, to the rear of the property is a large garden and private car parking as well as a shed for cyclists to store their bikes.

Top Traveller Review

About the Owner

We travelled around the very best parts of the English countryside from top to bottom to find what we believed to be the most beautiful village!

We succeeded! We are very pleased that our family and friends love our choice as much as we do.

If you need accommodation for more than 5 people, how about looking at our other beautiful holiday home in the idyllic medieval black & white village of Weobley in the heart of rural Herefordshire?

Guestbook comments from the manager

"Bluebell Cottage is delightful and in a beautiful setting - inside is surprisingly modern with every convenience; the beds are extremely comfortable and we all felt as snug as a bug in a rug! Thank you so much for sharing it with us"

"We had a wonderful time in your beautiful cosy cottage. The little extras - tea, coffee etc. were very much appreciated and The Falkland Arms is a little gem - a real rustic pub. Thank you!"

The latest in many wonderful stays here.

  • 5 of 5

It's all wonderful. Make sure you say how many beds you need made up as I was caught slightly short this time given they'd always been all made up before, but the linen cupboard was open so I think my guest managed. Mea culpa! We also brought a lot of logs along as we do like the fire here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely review and so pleased you enjoyed your second visit to our lovely cottage. We don't expect guests to make up their own beds (!), which is why we always ask how many people and how many beds, so sorry you had to do it this time :). Also, we keep the log shed supplied with logs, so please don't feel you need to bring your own as they are included to ensure you're always warm and cosy in the cottage. The shed is large enough to hold logs for a number of weeks! Please come again! Karen

Wonderful place in the Cotswolds

  • 4 of 5

My 2 sisters and myself stayed here for 4 days and what a welcome - flowers and wine on the table and the lights on - it was a wonderfully warm feeling to walk inside. The property is very clean and well maintained and exactly as described on the web site. It is very well situated for visiting other places in the Cotswolds as well as further afield. I was presently surprised at how short the trip was from Blenheim Palace to 'home' as it was rather late in the afternoon when we left Blenheim.

I do have one concern and that is with the washer/dryer - and as we had arrived from Australia the week before we were getting short of clean clothes. None of us were familiar with the washer/dryer but we did read the manufacturer's instructions and still managed to end up with soaking wet clothes after 5 hours. Clearer instructions would be good - we did get it to work once as we thought it should work but we were still trying to get clothes dry minutes before we left. I rang the 3 contact phone numbers and left a message on 2 of the numbers but did not get a reply. We had gone out for about an hour but were there for the rest of the day and did not receive any reply. This was disappointing as the cottage had lived up to expectations and I would certainly recommend it as a wonderful place to stay.

VERY COMFORTABLE COTTAGE IN AMAZING COUNTRYSIDE.

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is clean, cosy, extremely well equipped & comfortable for a stay in a beautiful little village. It has been sympathetically restored so retains 'Ye Olde Worlde' charm. Coming bang up to date the internet connection is faster than ours in London so you can look up all the surrounding places you wish to visit. If you want peace & quiet this is the place for you. There is nothing much in Great Tew other than the Falkland Arms pub, there is also a small florist/tea shop, 'Sweetpeas', but it was a bit hit & miss as to when or whether it was actually open. Some days it was others it wasn't!!

Great Tew is perfectly positioned for you to visit so many places, including Blenheim Palace, Chipping Norton, Burford, Oxford, Banbury & our particular favourite Sudeley Castle, the last resting place of Queen Katherine Parr, Henry VIII's sixth wife & the only one to survive him. If you like history this is the place to visit. Bladon is another must see, this is where Winston Churchill & members of his family are buried in the lovely little Churchyard of St. Martins there, this is about 12 miles from Great Tew.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Bluebell Cottage to friends & family.

Gorgeous Cotswolds cottage in the heart of one of the prettiest villages in the area.

  • 5 of 5

Impeccably presented property in excellent condition and with everything you could possibly need for your stay. Great location in the village and for exploring the surrounding area. As a host, Karen was so helpful and responsive. We could not recommend Bluebell Cottage more highly! We will definitely be back.

The perfect holiday cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Bluebell Cottage is without doubt a very pretty house in a beautiful Cotswold village. The cottage is in immaculate condition and very well equipped. Great Tew is a picturebook village, where about 20 thatched cottages and the wonderful Falkland Arms stand at the end of a lane in a gloriously peaceful setting.

Location

From the Owner

The cottage is absolutely beautiful! Thick golden cotswold stone walls and a lovely thatched roof .... how could you not love it? Great Tew is an amazing village and a step back in time. Nothing much changes here we are pleased to say! We love the location because it has a quiet, relaxing feel to it but is within easy reach of larger towns should the need ever arise to venture out into the big wide world! Have a pint of local ale at the well renowned Falkland Arms where on some Sundays you will be joined by a live folk band. The only problem you will face at Bluebell Cottage is that you may not want to leave!

Central heating radiators in every room help a lot! Situated in the beautiful Cotswolds, Bluebell Cottage is ideal for romantic getaways, family celebrations, couples and family holidays, walkers and cyclists etc. The cottage is ideal for all age groups and there is a travel cot as well as high chair and stairgate for young children. It is essential that children are supervised when the fire is lit to prevent accidents. Sorry no pets. Outside: On a sunny day, the garden is an attractive, peaceful suntrap with fruit trees, shrubs and wild flowers in abundance. Garden furniture is provided during the warmer summer months so you can relax in the sun on the patio at the back. There is a garden shed at the back suitable for storing bicycles. Please bring your own padlocks if required. In addition, there is an enormous expanse of parkland at the front of the house with park benches for taking in the views and country air or for children to play on the grass. Utility Room: There is an airer available for drying clothes inside if required. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: in keeping with the luxurious feel of Bluebell Cottage, lovely thick towels, crisp bed linen and soft duvets are all provided. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned and linen changed before each new guest arrives and at least once a week for longer stays.
