About the property

Villa in Trebes, Nr. Carcassonne, Aude, Languedoc Roussillon, France - Rural Location Within Easy Reach Of The Historic City Of Carcassonne

Thanks to it being situated on a private estate that is less than 20 minutes away from the historic city of Carcassonne and close to the medieval village of Trebes, 4-bedroom Villa des Vignes offers guests the sense of being in the heart of the French countryside while still within easy reach of civilization. As our second family home, the Villa is generously furnished throughout, with the large private garden providing areas for relaxation & dining as well as swimming in the 11m pool. Lower bedrooms open onto the garden, while upper ones enjoy garden & vineyard views from a shared balcony. Bordered by the Canal du Midi, the 175 acre estate of vines, olives & pines offers beautiful views, while Trebes has everything needed to fuel your stay by way of supermarkets stocked with a wide variety of local and international goods; bakeries for daily croissant & fresh bread; excellent butcher, fishmonger & fresh vegetable shops. There are also a number of delightful bars & restaurants alongside the canal.

About TCaven

As we do not live in Europe, Villa des Vignes is our home away from home that we are happy to share with caring guests when we are not able to enjoy it ourselves.

TCaven purchased this villa in 2006

Why TCaven chose Carcassonne surroundings

We wanted a base in Europe and fell in love with this property thanks to the tranquillity offered by its private location but also the wide range of cultural and outward bound activities easily accessible in Trebes, Carcassonne and across Cathar country.

What makes this villa unique

Living in a part of the world that is always changing, it is reassuring to find a place that still moves at a quieter pace and where family-run businesses remain just that. Summer just would not be the same without renewing our acquaintance with the owners of the fish restaurant, cheering on the knights in the jousting at Carcassonne and braving the "rapids" down the Aude.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"This was the second year that we have stayed at the Villa and it has fast become a favourite for all of us. When we can drag ourselves away from the Villa, there is so much to do around the area, we'll just have to come back again to do some more!" Lofthouse family, 2013 & 2012.

"The kids love the pool, the garden and all the activities that they can do, we love the loungers, the daybed, barbecue and fact that the kids are pleasantly exhausted by day's end! Thanks for having us back." Jones, 2013 & 2012.

A freshwater lake area called Carcassonne Plage lies about 15-20 minutes away from the Villa and in Summer has a number of family activities available.

Less than an hour away are miles of typically packed beaches at resorts like Gruissan & further south is Collioure, the "St Tropez" of the Languedoc. There are over 70 km of sandy beaches stretching from the mouth of the River Aude, down the length of the Golfe du Lion to the rugged cliffs of the Côte Vermeille at the Spanish border.

Carcassonne Airport is only 20 minutes away from the Villa, with a good range of car-hire available. Many guests also fly in to Toulouse, which is just over 100 KM (1 hour's drive) away.

While Trebes is within walking & biking distance, we do recommend that guests hire cars if they are to fully enjoy the experience of staying in Cathar country.

The nearest village with supermarkets, shops, restaurants, post office, pharmacy and medical services is Trebes at just over a kilometre away.

Carcassonne, with its stunning Cite and other places of historical interest is 9.8km away, around 15 minutes drive time.

Lastours one of the nearest and most gratifying of the Cathar castles, is just over 18km away.

Further Details:

Established in the late twelfth century, Trebes (or “Tres B’s”) is set on the Canal du Midi and, until the early 20th century, was a prosperous staging post in the transit of wines along the canal. Today the village is a popular stop-off for people travelling on or along the canal, offering a number of shops, banks (with cash points),opticians, hairdressers, pharmacies and good Italian and French restaurants - all within walking distance of the centre of the village.

Being on the main tourist route from Carcassonne to the region’s vineyards, Trebes is known as the "Gateway to the Minervois". Leaving Trebes, you soon arrive at local "domaines" where you can buy wine direct from the growers.

With the Carcassonne skyline dominated by the breathtaking Cite, you cannot get away from this area’s rather dark history. Amongst historians and purists there is some argument about what constitutes a Cathar castle (most were in fact built by the French after the brutal suppression of the free-thinking, liberal Cathars), but across the region many impressive towns, such as Minerve, and the ruined castles of Queribus, Termes and Peyrepertuse in the Pays Cathares or the castle of Montferrand on the ridge of the Pic St Loup, are striking examples from this bleak and violent period of local history.

For those who wish to combine site-seeing with adventure, the area offers endless choice of activities from mountain and road-biking, to kayaking down the Aude river, hiking in the Black Mountains, horse riding in the Black Hills and valleys near Limoux, golf at Carcassonne, tennis at the courts in Trebes, forest-adventure tree climbing at Carcassonne Plage and water sports. One visit will not be enough to cover them all!

A beautiful region....

  • 5 of 5

We have never visited this region of France before, but have always wanted to see Carcassonne. We were not disappointed. It's a lovely area to sightsee. The villa was perfectly placed for visiting local attractions. We loved the villa. It was spacious, very well equipped and the A.C was a bonus! The children loved the pool and the hammocks and we became very competitive at ping-pong....I would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you Tess.

Peaceful spot

  • 5 of 5

Villa des Vignes is in a beautiful peaceful setting close to the Canal du Midi and surrounded by vineyards. There are a couple of other holiday lets nearby but apart from this there is little to disturb you and the grounds are very private. Despite the relatively remote location the broadband speed was very good. The house was clean and tidy and has everything you could need for a two week stay. The owners and the local houskeeepers are unbelievably helpful and accommodating.

Trebes is a half hour walk for good local shops and restaurants. Carcassonne is not quite as close by foot as it looks at a glance due to the limited river and canal crossings but it is nevertheless a pleasant day's walk and public transport will get you back to Trebes at minimal cost.

We had a couple of little problems during our stay which were dealt with very promptly and efficiently.

Warmly recommended!

We have recently returned from a week long family holiday at Villa Des Vignes. We found the villa was very well situated, only a short drive from Toulous Airport, and only a 10 minute drive from the lovely Carcassonne. The villa itself is set within a lovely quiet location and you really could be mistaken that you were miles from anywhere even though the village of Trebes is only a short distance away. Trebes has lovely walks along the canal du midi, shops, restaurants and a large super market selling everything you are likely to need for a self catered holiday.

The Villa itself was perfect for our family. We had 6 adults and 2 children under 10 years old staying at the villa with more than plenty of room. The pool was a huge hit in the 36 degree sun. The villa had everything you could possibly want and the games room was a real bonus with the children. 2 of the bedrooms also had air con which was a treat we werent expecting. The 2 other rooms were equipped with electric fans. The kitchen has everything you would need and we made use of the bbq. The garden was huge and safe for the children to run around.

Tess the owner was a pleasure to deal with and responded to our emails promptly. We had a couple of very minor issues during our stay. One was the pool filter and the other was a few outside bulbs not working. Tess gave me the contact details of Dan and Sarah the caretakers before our visit and they were very quick to respond and sorted the issues immediately.

We would love to visit again sometime and would recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing holiday in the sun. Book now!

A calm, private, relaxing environment.

  • 5 of 5

Villa des Vignes is an attractive house with a generous garden conveniently situated for the airport whilst being plumb in the middle of lovely countryside. The views from the upstairs balcony when you emerge from your bedroom will give you a lift every morning.

I stayed there with my three teenage sons and our time was divided between lounging by the pool, playing table tennis and using the barbecue (oh, and snoozing in the amazingly comfortable hammocks) mixed in with sightseeing excursions and meals out.

There's lots to do in the area and plenty of places to eat. The attractive local town of Trebes is only a stone's throw away and has good restaurants, shops and a supermarket.

The villa is very well equipped - absolutely nothing found wanting. It's furnished in a

way that manages to combine homeliness and practicality and, above all, comfort.

The owner is extremely friendly and helpful and a delight to deal with.

It's a long time since we've been on a holiday which ticked every box. This one did.

A perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

In the middle of a vineyard , in a quiet part of France, this lovely, very well equipped house ( a pizza wheel short of perfection !) is a perfect holiday retreat and base to explore around Carcassonne and the Canal Du Midi. A car is essential but the little town of Trebes is within walking distance but probably not in the heat of the Sun. We had a wonderful week and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this beautiful villa and pool.
