A chance to stay in an unspoiled part of Spain in a beautiful house in an equally beautiful village setting. Parts of the house date back 400 years and most of the original stone and timber features remain but the recent renovation has combined the old charm with modern conveniences and all you need for a relaxing and comfortable holiday. The property has been updated to include underfloor heating, solar panels for hot water, a wood burning stove and bedrooms and bathrooms finished to a very high standard. As an older property with thick stone walls it is also brilliant at staying cool in the summer and retaining the heat in the cooler months. All the rooms provide space to relax and unwind, entertain or simply share the experiences of the day. Outside is a large courtyard garden with planted areas and a range of patios to enjoy the sun or sit in the shade. A garage at the end of the garden provides storage for bikes as well as the car.

About Steve Barrow

We are a family of five and we lived in Spain for 2 years in the property we are now renting out. My wife is half Spanish and we have strong links to this area of Spain. We also holiday in the area at least once a year.

Our children are all of school age and we are both teachers. We are passionate about Spain and we love this area because of its scenery, wide variety of activities and it is unspoiled nature.

Why Steve Barrow chose Palencia Province

We have always loved this area of Spain because of the countryside, the climate, the outdoor lifestyle and the people we have met.

It is an unspoiled part of Spain where many traditions still continue. The economy is mainly agricultural and thriving communities have developed within the small villages and the local town of Aguilar de Campoo.

Our children went to the local school for 2 years and we have many close friends in the area. We return every year to catch-up, relax and enjoy all that the area has to offer from walking in the mountains, cycling, experiencing the local cuisine and to just wind down.

What makes this house unique

The property has an open plan feel with four spacious bedrooms and three bathrooms. The house combines exposed stone walls and timbers with tiled and wooden floors. It is cool in the summer and cosy and warm in the colder months with the added benefit of a wood burning stove.

Parts of the house date back 400 years and the renovation has retained all the old charm of a traditional stone house but carefully integrated it with modern living to include underfloor heating, solar panels for hot water, well equipped kitchen with larder and plenty of space to relax and entertain.

The house has its own private courtyard garden surrounded by stone walls with a variety of areas to enjoy both in the shade or to soak up the sun.

The property is cleaned once a week but we expect the house to be looked after by all our guests and returned in a tidy cleanly state. Beautiful property inside and out in a unique plac

I’ve stayed in lots of self-catering cottages in the UK and abroad, some of them very expensive, and this probably had the best interior finish of any. The stone walls, wooden beams and many other features made you feel you were in a Grand Designs house. Yet it wasn’t intimidating, just comfortable.

The garden is on the small side but perfectly big enough for a BBQ, or relaxing on a lounger. We live in the countryside but what is almost overwhelming is the silence and peace of the place. There are plenty of walks and bike rides from the house. I went out on my bike in the morning along normal roads for two hours and saw only 5 cars. The area is very quiet.

The nearby town has most things you could need and the market is definitely worth a visit. There was a good atmosphere there and you would probably be the only tourists there but without a sense of awkwardness. The nearby lake by the town is definitely worth a visit. It’s great for swimming and there’s even a sandy beach next to pine trees.

Burgos is worth a visit and the beaches by Santander are great, and both only an hour away. Lots of mountains are closer and whether you want to walk or cycle, there is a lot to do and explore.

The English owners were very helpful and the business side of things was very straight forward and efficient.

Don’t come here if you want clubs and crowds but if you want a relaxing or active holiday, staying in a beautiful cottage, this is a great place to come. Don’t miss out on ordering an empanada from the housekeeper!

Already Planning our Return

If you want some peace and quiet, in beautiful countryside, under blue skies, come to this place! We had a fabulous week here at the end of July with our two daughters. The house is beautiful - clean and modern but with all the character retained. There is loads of space and the kitchen is well-equipped. I don't think there was anything we looked for and couldn't find. It didn't take long for each of us to find a favourite spot in the garden to read our books with only the buzzing of bees to disturb us. If the girls got bored (which they didn't), there were plenty of games to keep them busy. We really appreciated the bikes as it was lovely to explore in the early evenings. There are any number of little tracks to follow. We did many of the activities and visits suggested by the owners and loved the walks. The scenery is spectacular in places. We were a bit worried about being so far from the sea as we usually book a beach holiday, but we found the lake which was uncrowded and the water was warm.

The locals were friendly and helpful, but be warned, they speak no English, so a good phrasebook and guidebook are essential if you speak no Spanish, and especially if you want to understand a bit of the history. There were no leaflets available in English in the places we visited and we saw not a single Brit during the whole of our stay. This is authentic Spain!

Best bits for me: the beautiful, tiny Romanesque churches; the storks who flew in to feed in nearby fields in the early mornings and evenings; the food!

Best bits for my husband: the first time we have come home from a holiday with euros in our pockets; the walking in beautiful countryside; the food (lovely restaurant at Salinas de Pisuerga called ‘Casa de Las Campanas’)!

Wonderful week

We thoroughly enjoyed a most relaxing and restorative week in Villacibio. If you want a beautiful house in perfect quiet in which to zone out, then this is the place for you. We have never stayed in a better equipped house - everything you could want - excellent cooking equipment, loads of dishes, great chairs for garden, games for kids and fantastic information packs for each town and area nearby. The house is a real pleasure in itself - the pictures don't really give you the scale of the spacious, luxurious feel of this lovely renovation.

You do need to be organised about food as shopping needs to be done in Aguilar - a real treat in itself. We had terrific weather and we did two long walks, a couple of bike rides on the local caminos through the amazing limestone gorges and hillsides plus visits to Burgos and the Ebro gorge. Families can swim in summer at the lake 5 miles away - it looked idyllic.

The peace, quiet and privacy of this house touched us deeply - highly recommended!

We stayed here for a week - myself, my husband, nineteen-year-old son and his girlfriend. It was the perfect place for us. The house was large, private, peaceful and extremely comfortable. Beautifully restored. The view over the fields and hills when we opened the shutters in the mornings couldn't have been more relaxing. We explored the local area on the bikes, swam in the reservoir, ate great food. The teenagers wandered up to the bar/cafe in the nearby village of Mave when they had to plug in. We happened across a local food market in Aguilar on Saturday - not sure if it was a one-off or a summer feature - which was great; spectacular cakes. This is a area of Spain we certainly hope to return to.

Lovely Holiday

We spent two weeks staying in this house. The house is absolutely fantastic. A loving and beatiful restoration and modernising of a character traditional spanish village stone house.

We had a lovely welcome from the local family who look afer the house and clean it each week - they were lovely.

Destpite being so easy to get to being only a short drive from the motorway, you cannot hear any traffic at all. It is really peaceful.

We had some great visits while we stayed here. We would recommend both the indoor and outdoor swimming pools at Auquilar De Compoo - both are excellent, as is the nearby reservoir. A trip to the cable car in the Picos mountains takes just over two hours and is well worth it as are the local beaches near Santander which are just over an hour away.

I would definitely recommend as stay here - a lovely place to stay, a very relaxing and peaceful holiday in a wonderful house.

Great house in great location

This is a very spacious, well equipped and interesting house.

The private garden is quite a suntrap whilst inside the house seemed to remain lovely and cool - even on our hottest day.

Set in a little gem of a village it was easy to get to and very well located for exploring the surrounding area. We found that driving to cities such as Burgos and Leon both quick and easy.

Nearby we found many interesting places to visit as well as some great walks.

Our stay in this property was just one part of a longer tour of Northern Spain so after a week we moved onto another area. However we could have quite easily stayed here for a lot lot longer.
