About Camilla Whitworth-Jones

My husband worked at the Casa da Musica in Porto and we fell in love with the City. We were very lucky to find this recently renovated house in 2008, situated in the wonderful old city with incredible views over the River Douro. The feedback from all our visitors has been hugely enthusiastic and for most of them it was their first visit to this beautiful and utterly unspoilt city. But we are spoilt in the way house is managed by Sofia Alves who keeps it to immaculate, hotel standard.

As the Evening Standard wrote in July 2012 "For great city life plus beaches on the doorstep, and unbelievably low prices, Porto, in the North, is unbeatable".

Camilla Whitworth-Jones purchased this house in 2008

What makes this house unique

Since buying this house 5 years ago Porto has become a very popular tourist destination. Our house is unique with its amazing views and location and beautifully looked after by Sofia. As a result it is standing up well to the increased competition.

This is what our guests say - not just us!

Recent article (Jan 30th 2016) in the International New York Times: "Stunning 18th and 19th Century buildings, new indie bars and restaurants and a laid back vibe, facilitated by the excellent wine - its hard to find anything to dislike about Porto. Its walkable center is crammed with cobbled streets and balconies adorned with flowerpots and the city's love of food and design is apparent in concept stores and trendy restaurants offering innovative small plates. An ideal day in Porto combines both the grandeur of its history and its very up to minute cool"

Our house is right in the center of l these attractions all easily reachable by foot!

Lovely Stay in Porto

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful and comfortable apartment! The views over the Douro River to the warehouses storing Port across the river were stunning from the bedroom, the dining area and the deck. The danger of the deck was that we were tempted to stay there and not see all the sites of Porto or sample its outstanding restaurants. The location made it easy for us to walk everywhere in downtown Porto. The apartment was sparkling, well outfitted and extremely comfortable. Sophia greeted us most graciously, was thorough in explaining how everything in the apartment worked and helpful with suggestions for restaurants and things to see. Our next trip to Porto will find us in the same apartment.

Une maison magnifique au cœur de Porto

  • 5 of 5

Famille Marechal

Stunning apartment in Porto

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved this apartment so much last year that we booked it again this year. It is a wonderful apartment in which every detail has been considered to maximize the beauty and efficiency of the space. Camilla was wonderful regarding communication ahead of time. Sofia and Manuel were there to greet us when we arrived with some provisions to get us started in the apartment. The view facing the D'ouro is impressive! You can see it from all three floors. It was great for us because we were traveling with teenagers who slept late every day. We could enjoy coffee in the morning and just relax. There are so many wonderful things to do and see in Porto but one of our highlights was simply staying in the apartment and enjoying the view. Thank you so much for another wonderful visit. If we are lucky enough to come to Porto again, it will only be if we can stay here!

The Perfect Place in Porto

  • 5 of 5

Camilla's home is utterly delightful. If anything the pictures do not do it full justice. Ideally situated in Miragaia, it is the perfect place from which to explore beautiful Porto. Tranquilly located but only a short walk to the river and the old town.

The communication and information provided prior to our trip was prompt, thorough and always friendly. This matched the lovely welcome we received from Sofia and Manuel. Knowing it was my birthday holiday, Sofia had left a card and a rose. This thoughtfulness was also reflected in the attention to detail and little touches that make such a difference. Living in the the house really felt like being at home. All creature comforts were provided from coffee to literature to music to ..rooms with river views.

We soon became regular shoppers at Carlos' lovely fine food and wines (not expensive) emporium and Fernanda's convenient mini market store on Rua de Belamonte.

As for restaurants and bars, our favourites included San Antonio, Cafe de Muralha de Barca (a bit touristy but great location, super food and lovely staff), Casa Mezquita (back street near Continente supermarket) owned by Jose (it's been in his family for decades...tiny not a tourist in sight!). We also ventured out to Matosinhos in pursuit of jazz and had wonderful seafood. Talking of jazz Hot 5 is the place to go! it was a band we saw there that led us out to Matosinhos.

Another recommendation is the helicopter tour. We took the 20 minute trip. Another Carlos is the super pilot and Sara was the friendly face in the office and helper in and out of the helicopter.

Overall, we cannot recommend too highly both Camilla's house and Porto. We will be returning.

Stunning apartment in great location with fab view

  • 5 of 5

I stayed with my parents for 4 nights at this beautifully designed apartment and honestly can't praise it highly enough. Every little detail is thought of, Sofia who checks you in is lovely and very helpful if you need a taxi arranging, and the views from all the front Windows and the terrace are simply stunning. If you're going to Porto, stay here. You'd be crackers not to.

Further Details:

A recent article in the Guardian newspaper said Porto was “nothing like as popular with tourists as Lisbon or the Algarve, which is a shame as few western European cities so successfully combine charm and culture with a low cost of living.” Porto is certainly cheap. A beer rarely costs more than a Euro and you’ll pay the same for a three day pass which gives access to the cities excellent public transport system.

Porto is a beautiful unspoilt city sited on the steep banks of the River Douro just before it reaches the sea. It has architecture dating from the Middle Ages to 19th Century neo-classical. The historic centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renowned for its port wine, this industrious, friendly city offers a warm welcome to visitors and has particularly strong ties with its “oldest ally”, England.

There is no better way to enjoy the delights of Porto than actually staying in the old town and we can offer a thoroughly modern recently renovated house in a very quiet street. It has a magnificent view over the river and is ideally situated to explore Porto on foot. It’s also close to the city’s metro system and the main Sao Bento railway station.

Porto facts:

Porto is Portugal’s second biggest city.

The city has a population of just over 200,000.

There are some excellent museums and art galleries.

Porto cathedral is the city’s oldest surviving structure.

Nightlife in the city has been described as “turbo-charged”.
