A Great Place To Visit - Charm And Culture With Low Cost Living

Updated: 25-Oct-2016
House in Porto, Costa Verde, Portugal

Sleeps 4/6 comforably. Relax and enjoy in outstanding modern comfort and style in Rua Tomas Gonzaga, Porto. The house is located in a quiet street in Porto’s stunning historic district. There are magnificent views over the river and it is ideally situated to explore the city on foot. It is close to the metro, the main railway station (Sao Bento) and many bus routes. There are plenty of good restaurants and bars within easy reach too. The house has been completely renovated to the highest standards. As a guest said recently "Fabulous location.Central to everything. Thank you so much for providing everything for our comfort".

Guests will be welcomed by Sofia Alves who will have provided coffee, tea, milk and bread etc for your arrival.

About the Owner

My husband worked at the Casa da Musica in Porto and we fell in love with the City. We were very lucky to find this recently renovated house in 2008, situated in the wonderful old city with incredible views over the River Douro. The feedback from all our visitors has been hugely enthusiastic and for most of them it was their first visit to this beautiful and utterly unspoilt city. But we are spoilt in the way house is managed by Sofia Alves who keeps it to immaculate, hotel standard.

As the Evening Standard wrote in July 2012 "For great city life plus beaches on the doorstep, and unbelievably low prices, Porto, in the North, is unbeatable".

Fantastic Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic holiday in Porto due primarily to Camilla's gorgeous house. It was comfortable, spacious, clean and well thought out - everything was provided for and more than enough room for the six of us. The outstanding views from 3 different levels in the house really set it apart. Every morning, afternoon and evening held a different mood due to those views! Porto itself was, for us, an undiscovered gem. Glorious food and wine that was inexpensive, friendly people, amazing sights and great beaches. We could not have asked for more. Camilla and her housekeeper Sofia were so helpful and kind. We are still talking about this wondrous holiday.

Owner's Response: What a wonderful review - thank you very much and particularly glad you appreciated the beautiful views. They are the ultimate USP for the house and we probably don't emphasize that enough. But you have, so many thanks. And I will of course pass on your comments to Sofia without whom nothing would work as well. Best wishes, Camilla

We fell in love with Porto - and this little house. The views, location, design, comfort, cleanliness, greeting and prior communication with the owner were all just outstanding. Book it. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

We Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Porto. The house was perfectly placed and the owner had thought of everything, eg tea towels, washing up liquid, hand soap, shower gel, shampoo. These things are rarely provided in properties costing a lot more. The house was immaculate and the local lady looking after the property was easily contactable and very helpful. We would certainly recommend this property to friends or relatives.

Great accommodation in Porto

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is refurbished to a very good standard and provided excellent accommodation for us. Everything worked and it was very clean. The location is excellent and it served us very well. We would recommend taking the steps down to the quay (turn right out the door and then right again down the steps on the corner of the square) where you come out almost exactly at the first stop for the red hop-on, hop-off bus. This provides an excellent way of getting your bearings in Porto, which was larger than we had expected. We chose the combined ticket which gives 2 days bus plus a river cruise plus a Cockburns Port tour for 24 Euros pp - excellent value. We would recommend Taylors for lunch or dinner - good value, very good food and superb views of the city from the opposite bank of the river.

Clean, modern, great river views from all 3 floors

  • 5 of 5

This house provides a real haven in the old part of Porto. Completely modernised with imaginative design and wonderful uninterrupted views across the Douro to the port wine lodges from all three floors. The beds were really comfortable and there were plenty of supplies of all the basic consumables we needed for our 5day stay for four people (butter, salt, pepper, dishwasher tabs etc). A real benefit. A package of lots of really useful local advice from the owner (who was very helpful with queries) and plenty more guides maps etc in the house.

Very well situated for the main attractions of Porto and Sao Bento station (we took the train to Guimaraes one day, the birthplace of Portugal and a beautiful old centre and a chance to travel through the countryside)

We wouldn't hesitate recommending this delightful house to friends and relatives and hope to find an excuse to return ourselves some time.

Beware the Andante tickets. We bought them with two Z2 journeys loaded then tried to recharge them. Big mistake. We tried to recharge two but the machine took our money, did not recharge the tickets but even worse, invalidated them. We had to buy new ones (they were thin card with a chip embedded). It is a 48 hour process to reclaim the lost fares which are not refunded but given back aa a new preloaded card - not very useful the day before you leave. Though helpful the ticket staff said problems were common - not impressed.

We love the Portuguese coffee/confectionary habit and it's easy to do this for less than 2 euros but treat yourself to a crème brûlée at the Cafe Majestic. We had really good meals at O Caracas ( round the corner from the house), O Lusitano in the port of Matosinhos ( down the steps from the house and get the bus along the river). Both are in the house notes.

If you visit the port lodges walk across the highest level of the bridge for great views then to eat avoid the riverfront tourist restaurants with pictures of food and turn 100 yes up Rua Cândido dos Reis 27 for authentic well sourced regional delicacies delivered by the two brothers with a touching passion for the food and their country. A real chance event for us.

All in all a wonderful few days enhanced considerably by this house

Further Details:

A recent article in the Guardian newspaper said Porto was “nothing like as popular with tourists as Lisbon or the Algarve, which is a shame as few western European cities so successfully combine charm and culture with a low cost of living.” Porto is certainly cheap. A beer rarely costs more than a Euro and you’ll pay the same for a three day pass which gives access to the cities excellent public transport system.

Porto is a beautiful unspoilt city sited on the steep banks of the River Douro just before it reaches the sea. It has architecture dating from the Middle Ages to 19th Century neo-classical. The historic centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renowned for its port wine, this industrious, friendly city offers a warm welcome to visitors and has particularly strong ties with its “oldest ally”, England.

There is no better way to enjoy the delights of Porto than actually staying in the old town and we can offer a thoroughly modern recently renovated house in a very quiet street. It has a magnificent view over the river and is ideally situated to explore Porto on foot. It’s also close to the city’s metro system and the main Sao Bento railway station.

Porto facts:

Porto is Portugal’s second biggest city.

The city has a population of just over 200,000.

There are some excellent museums and art galleries.

Porto cathedral is the city’s oldest surviving structure.

Nightlife in the city has been described as “turbo-charged”.

From the Owner

Since buying this house 5 years ago Porto has become a very popular tourist destination. Our house is unique with its amazing views and location and beautifully looked after by Sofia. As a result it is standing up well to the increased competition. This is what our guests say - not just us! Recent article (Jan 30th 2016) in the International New York Times: "Stunning 18th and 19th Century buildings, new indie bars and restaurants and a laid back vibe, facilitated by the excellent wine - its hard to find anything to dislike about Porto. Its walkable center is crammed with cobbled streets and balconies adorned with flowerpots and the city's love of food and design is apparent in concept stores and trendy restaurants offering innovative small plates. An ideal day in Porto combines both the grandeur of its history and its very up to minute cool" Our house is right in the center of l these attractions all easily reachable by foot!
