Overview

About the property

Large period house in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with distant sea views - quiet, rural position only 700m to the 'City'centre and 10/15 Mins walk to coastal path/beach

Welcome to our advert!

We are very proud of our holiday rental property and hope the reviews on this website, many from returning travellers, are helpful in your decision making. Our approach is to liaise and deal with our guests on a personalised basis - in line with the concept of Owners Direct.

We recommend you click 'More Details' below and read this section of our advert in full.

Ty Glasfryn has been renovated and furnished to a high standard. It is a stone built, former farmhouse dating from the 1850's in a good size plot, and there's over 3,000 sqft of space in which you can spread out and relax.

We can sleep 10 in 5 comfortable, large bedrooms with high ceilings and other Victorian features. The high quality bedding includes mostly Vi-spring mattresses with 2 x King size, 2 x Superking size (which can be split into singles if required) and 2 x full-size bunks. There are also 2 extra adult size 'Z' beds, with comfy sprung mattresses, for use in any room if needed and so offering the chance to sleep up to a total of 12. A travel cot is available for you to use if required. Do browse through our photos and see the description of the rooms under Facilities tag above.

There are 3 showers, one bath and 4 loos in the 2 family bathrooms, en-suite and ground floor cloakroom plus a courtyard WC and hot & cold outdoor shower for sandy wetsuits or mucky dogs.

We are surrounded by fields and yet only about 700m from the centre of St Davids, or just another short walk to the coastal path and nearest beach. There is a convenient footpath which leads to the supermarket and other central facilities including a large children's play area with swings etc (both within less than 5 mins walk).

PLEASE NOTE : the local Google street view image of Ty Glasfryn is out of date. The Council have recently upgraded Glasfryn Road to incorporate a new pavement link towards the award winning Visitors Centre and then on to the middle of St Davids. This runs opposite our house and has improved further the opportunity to walk safely into the nearby central area without having to worry about parking in busier times.

Our location is ideal for you to access all this important and historic City has to offer, including it's wonderful Cathedral, Bishop's Palace and other monuments. The surrounding countryside and coastline within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is magnificent and has abundant wildlife for you to discover with Ty Glasfryn as your base.

The house sits in approx 1/3 acre with a number of mature trees and a south facing, mostly lawned garden. The perimeter is fenced and has been made as dog-proof as possible. The driveway is gated with parking area for at least 5 cars. The south facing patio has a teak table and chairs for outdoor eating & steamer chairs for relaxing. We also have a covered area for table tennis and a large, purpose built BBQ area. From the first floor landing and two of the bedrooms there are lovely panoramic views over St Davids towards Whitesands beach which is about 2 miles away. It's a great spot to watch the sun set over Cardigan Bay .

For all your self-catering needs we have a 4 oven Aga in a large, very well-equipped kitchen with a separate electric oven for non-Aga users. There is a log burner in each of the two reception rooms and radiator central heating throughout. The new wooden windows are double glazed, adding to our significant investment in insulation throughout the house. For those who yearn modern facilities we provide a large TV with freeview channels and a 'rural' Wi-Fi service is available.

Ty Glasfryn is ideally suited for small or large groups providing family holidays for all generations. It offers a peaceful, comfortably spacious, well-equipped and conveniently located holiday home as a base for you to explore everything Pembrokeshire has to offer, at all times of the year.

PLEASE NOTE : the Owners Direct booking system is highly automated and as a result it may not always provide you with the correct rental quote for your holiday. Should you, for example, wish to stay for less than 7 nights, or arrive other than on our usual changeover day, which is a Saturday, then please ask us if this is possible and for a specific price as the automated quote you receive may not show the right costs.

Lastly, I'm afraid we do not accept bookings from Hen or Stag parties.

About Liz and David Cooke

We are based near Oxford and have owned Ty Glasfryn for over 6 years. The purchase coincided with both our daughters being at University which meant we had time to oversee the substantial refurbishment and improvement works to set the house up how we had planned and hoped.

We applied our respective interior design skills and surveying experience and so after more than 25 years of just one week holidays to the area we now have a comfortable, spacious and permanent base from which we can explore and enjoy everything this special part of the country has to offer all year round. As you can see our dog Saffi is quite pleased to visit too!

Having furnished throughout for use by our family and close friends we decided to make it available for holiday rentals in 2014. We have been delighted with the feedback from all the guests who have stayed for short or long breaks, many of whom have returned each year, and if you decide to book some time here then we hope you enjoy Ty Glasfryn and the surrounding area as much as we do.

Liz and David Cooke purchased this house in 2011

Why Liz and David Cooke chose Saint David's

A position just on the edge of St Davids ticked pretty much all the boxes on our wish list for a long-term base in Pembrokeshire. Visiting this area with our daughters from almost the day they were born our needs have changed from simple, quiet beaches with acres of sand to those with rock pools for catching shrimps, to harbours with jetties for crabbing, to surfing beaches, to long walks along the beautiful coastal path, all of which are nearby. More recent options include outward bound activities on land or sea, fishing, boat trips and a variety of equipment hire for the energetic visitor.

The beaches have remained wonderfully quiet by the way - no sign of speedboats or jet skis! On days of good old UK mixed weather, the Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, galleries, gift shops, woollen mills, wood turning shops, etc are all here for you to visit and explore. Not forgetting the option for retail therapy, restaurants and welcoming pubs. Ty Glasfryn is a great starting point from where you can walk or drive to your favourite beach, cove, part of the coastal path or leave the car behind and walk into the nearby 'City'!

What makes this house unique

We ultimately chose this spot for it's peaceful and convenient location. It's a short and safe walk into central St Davids to pick up the morning papers, visit the local bakery or any gallery, shop, restaurant and pub without needing a 'designated' driver! Equally we're only a short distance from everything the Pembrokeshire National Park has to offer.

Ty Glasfryn stood out for us due to the size and scale of the rooms, it's Victorian features and the overall feel of the house when you walk through the front door. We were especially keen to create a home for both summer or winter visits which was as comfortable as possible. So we have invested in quality bedding, new showers and bathrooms, an Aga, woodburners, comfy sofas and many other conveniences including broadband and wifi.

There's ample room for outdoor games, dining and relaxing should you choose to spend time in the private, south facing garden.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A wonderful 6 days here in St Davids. Ty Glasfryn has been a perfect family 'home from home' and we have enjoyed every minute! We hope to return one day"

"We came, we saw..... and we were utterly conquered - by this house, this part of Wales, the scenery, the sea, the surf, the sand and even the weather"

"A wonderfully relaxed few days. The world stopped and I got off for a while - a real haven. Thank you. Please can I come back?"

Great house, Great owners, Great Place...

  • 5 of 5

We had some great family time this Autumn staying in David and Liz's house. Can't fault it or them in any way from the moment of booking, during our stay, through to follow-up communication; every thing just right for us. We very much hope to return.

Lovely spacious house, very well equipped, beautifully clean, short walk into St David's.

  • 5 of 5

Just a long weekend for 8 friends and two dogs who hadn't been to St David's before. What a beautiful part of our country, the coastline very dramatic and we were lucky enough to see some seal pups. The house was so comfortable, especially the beds. So nice to be able to cook a meal and eat together, then light the wood burner and relax. Also great to be car-free, coastal path about a mile away, bus service fantastic and local cabs if you need them.

Period elegance with 21st century convenience.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family holiday with 3 generations and two dogs in this stunning property. We were really impressed with how well equiped the house is and the level of detail to which the owners have gone to to make this a real home from home. It is very spacious accomodation both inside and out, the patio makes for a fantastic outside dining area over looking the well cared for gardens. The house has the elegance of the early 1800's complemented by all the modern necessities, you get a real feel for life as a 'Country Gent'.

The house is well located for the local ammenities of St. Davids but without being in amongst it. It is easy to find and the parking is good, I cannot recommend this house enough it is one of the best places we have ever stayed in.

The things we really liked

The large well equiped kitchen diner.

The sunny patio with table and chairs.

Light and airy main sitting room.

Outside dog shower and servants stairs (first time we have stopped anywhere with these).

Well done Liz and David 10 out of 10.

Superbly equipped, comfortable and well maintained

  • 5 of 5

Ty Glasfryn is a superb, well maintained and equipped and conveniently located holiday home. Our family of 10 with ages ranging from 75 to 2 years spent a very happy, comfortable and memorable 2 weeks there.

On arrival, we found the house to be all that we had hoped for and more. It was clean, comfortable and spacious. The presence of 2 lounges, one with TV and DVD player and the other without provided the opportunity for those wishing quiet comfort to separate themselves from the media demanding youngsters ! We appreciated the kitchen and separate utility room both of which were generously equipped and the supply of cutlery and crockery was more than enough for a house full. We all slept very well in the well proportioned bedrooms and comfortable beds. Due to the carpeting throughout, the house was quiet.

We enjoyed the wide variety of games provided and the large garden with delightful lawn and very well appointed BBQ area. The undercover table tennis table was put to good use and provided excelled pre and post prandial entertainment.

There was no need to take the car into town as Ty Glasfryn is located within an easy walking distance of all the facilities that St Davids offers...The Cathedral (of course), banks, restaurants, a range of small art galleries, pubs, shopping facilities.

This is a truly glorious part of Pembrokeshire with the coastal path offering some of the most stunning scenery in the country (if not the world). There is a large range of beaches to visit, all beautiful in their own way but we particularly liked Whitesands and the one at Druidstone Haven. We enjoyed the walk from Abereiddy to Porthgain and the fish and chips that awaited at the end. The beach at Marloes is worth a visit albeit an hour's drive away.

There is no shortage of good eating places in St Davids but we particularly appreciated St Davids Kitchen and Cwytch. At the cheaper end, The Bishops and The Farmers Arms provide decent pub meals.

A number of companies run boat trips from the Lifeboat Station. A trip round Ramsay Island in a fast moving RIB was thrilling and revealed spectacular cliff formations, seals and sea birds.

The 9 hole golf course above Whitesands was delightful and challenging and always quiet. Take plenty of balls if the wind is blowing !!

We were appreciative of the wise counsel provided by David and Liz Cooke, the generous "welcome pack" and information and the thorough cleaning of Rosie. We most strongly recommend this place.

Coast/Beach:

Caerfai - the nearest to us. It has it's own car park and nearby shop in the high season. It's about 10/15 minutes walk from Ty Glasfryn.

Whitesands - the main beach for St Davids just over 2 miles away. Facilities include a car park, cafe, toilets, surf school and wet suit hire, lifeguards. Dogs - not permitted on the beach between 1st May and 30th September although there's space adjacent to the sand where you can base yourself. This is on the coastal path and there's a small cove within a short walk where dogs are permitted.

Newgale - huge at low tide! About 6 miles away. Parking, lifeguard, toilets, shop, cafe, pub, surf school, kite surf. Some dog restrictions.

Many others to visit!

Travel:

Haverfordwest rail station is within 16 miles

Fishguard ferry and rail station is within 15 miles

Drive to the end of the M4 and keep going - plenty of dual carriageway to keep you moving!

There are regular local 'hopper' buses linking to places of interest (pick up point within 250m of Ty Glasfryn) and national bus services to/from St Davids. The use of a car however is recommended to explore the wider region.

Distances:

Centre of St Davids - 700m

Cathedral/Bishop's Palace - just off the central area

Nearest supermarket/bakery - 300m

Oriel Y Parc award winning visitors centre - 250m

Hopper bus stop - 250m

Coastal path - 1.25km (0.75 miles)

Caerfai beach - 1.35km (0.85 miles)

Whitesands beach - 3.6km (2.25 miles)

Further Details:

There are numerous activities in this area for you to explore, at all times of the year and in all weather conditions!

Just put 'St Davids' or 'Pembrokeshire Coast National park' in any search engine for a taste of what's on offer and a list of local events and activities.

Not surprisingly the St Davids Cathedral is the centrepiece of the 'City', which you can easily walk to from Ty Glasfryn. This is one of the most important ecclesiastical sites in Wales with the original church established here in the 6th Century. The current buildings - the ruin of the Bishop's Palace and the wonderful Cathedral, which is in full use today - stem from the 12th Century and are a 'must see' to appreciate their full splendour.

Don't think St Davids is a metropolis though - the resident population is only around 1,600 people!

Ty Glasfryn also sits within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park so apart from the many beaches, coves and the coastal path to explore there is the wonderful wildlife to admire and plenty of places to visit and activities to pursue.

Beyond the Cathedral and Bishop's Palace our favourites include the numerous galleries in St Davids and the wider area, the nearby villages and towns of Solva, Porthgain and Narberth, the local TYF Adventures for coasteering, surfing, sea kayaking & rock climbing, and Voyages of Discovery for boat trips. There's Ramsey Island, horse riding and pony trekking, sheep dog trials, woollen mills, pottery painting, gardens to explore and restaurants to enjoy - the list goes on!
