Overview

Property

Updated: 24-Nov-2016
Large period house in St Davids and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with sea views - Quiet, rural position yet only 700m to the 'City'centre and 10/15 Mins walk to coastal path/beach

Welcome to our advert!

STOP PRESS : have a look at the COUNTRYFILE AUGUST 2016 MAGAZINE which has a great article all about this particular area of Pembrokeshire. Our favourite beach is on the front cover and many of our much-visited attractions are mentioned!

We are very proud of our holiday rental property and hope the reviews on this website, many from returning travellers, are helpful in your decision making. Our approach is to liaise and deal with our guests on a personalised basis - in line with the concept of Owners Direct.

We recommend you click 'More Details' below and read this section of our advert in full.

Ty Glasfryn has been renovated and furnished to a high standard. It is a stone built, former farmhouse dating from the 1850's in a good size plot, and there's over 3,000 sqft of space in which you can spread out and relax.

We can sleep 10 in 5 comfortable, large bedrooms with high ceilings and other Victorian features. Our photos show the style of the rooms. The high quality bedding includes mostly Vi-spring mattresses with 2 x King size and 2 x Superking size (which can be split into singles if required) and full-size bunks. There are also 2 extra 'Z' beds, with sprung mattresses, for use in any room if needed and so offering the chance to sleep up to a total of 12. We have a travel cot for you to use if required. See description of rooms under Facilities tag above.

There are 3 showers, one bath and 4 loos in the 2 family bathrooms, en-suite and ground floor cloakroom plus an external WC and a hot & cold outdoor shower for sandy wetsuits or mucky dogs.

We are surrounded by fields and yet only about 700m from the centre of St Davids, or just a short walk to the coastal path and nearest beach. There is a rural footpath opposite which leads to the supermarket and other central facilities including a large children's play area with swings etc (both within less than 5 mins walk).

PLEASE NOTE : the local Google street view image of Ty Glasfryn is very out of date. The Council are upgrading Glasfryn Road to incorporate a new pavement link and cycle route towards the Visitors Centre and the centre of St Davids which will run opposite Ty Glasfryn. We are advised work should start in the autumn of 2016 and be finished in early winter 2017.

The location is ideal for you to access all this important and historic City has to offer, including it's wonderful Cathedral and other historic monuments. The surrounding countryside and coastline within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is magnificent and has abundant wildlife for you to discover with Ty Glasfryn as your base.

The house sits in approx 1/3 acre with a number of mature trees and a south facing, mostly lawned garden. The perimeter is fenced and has been made as dog-proof as possible. The driveway is gated with parking area for at least 5 cars. The south facing patio has a teak table and chairs for outside eating & steamer chairs for relaxing. We also have a covered area with outdoor table tennis for you to use and a large, newly built BBQ area. From the first floor landing and two of the bedrooms there are lovely panoramic views over St Davids towards Whitesands beach which is about 2 miles away. It's a great spot to watch the sun set over Cardigan Bay .

For all your self-catering needs we have a 4 oven Aga in a large, very well-equipped kitchen with a separate electric oven for non-Aga users. There are 2 log burners and radiator central heating in all rooms. The new wooden windows are double glazed, adding to our significant investment in insulation throughout the house.

Ty Glasfryn is ideally suited for small or large groups providing family holidays for all generations. It offers a peaceful, comfortably spacious, well-equipped and conveniently located holiday home for you to explore everything Pembrokeshire has to offer, at all times of the year.

PLEASE NOTE : the Owners Direct booking system is highly automated and as a result it may not always provide you with the correct quote for your holiday. Should you, for example, wish to stay for less than 7 nights, or arrive other than on our usual changeover day, which is a Saturday, then please ask us if this is possible and for a specific price as the automated quote you receive may not include the right price.

We also suggest you click 'View Details' under the price shown when you enter your required dates. Then choose 'More Details' next to the Total. This shows a Service Fee which would be payable to Owners Direct to, "help Owners Direct provide a safer and more secure booking experience" - note this payment is optional from your point of view. We can provide further information when you apply.

Top Traveller Review

About the Owner

We are based near Oxford and have owned Ty Glasfryn since 2011. This coincided with both our daughters being at University meaning we had time to oversee the substantial refurbishment and improvement works and for setting up things how we had planned and hoped.

Liz applied her interior design flair and David his surveying experience as a long distance project manager which - fortunately - involved many regular visits! After 25 years of just one week holidays to the area, we now have a permanent base from which we can explore and enjoy everything this special part of the country has to offer all year round.

We are now set up for holiday rentals and hope you enjoy Ty Glasfryn and the surrounding area as much as we do.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A wonderful 6 days here in St Davids. Ty Glasfryn has been a perfect family 'home from home' and we have enjoyed every minute! We hope to return one day"

"We came, we saw..... and we were utterly conquered - by this house, this part of Wales, the scenery, the sea, the surf, the sand and even the weather"

"A wonderfully relaxed few days. The world stopped and I got off for a while - a real haven. Thank you. Please can I come back?"

A Perfect Pitch

  • 5 of 5

I have found a downside to taking on holiday lets and that is when it is constantly pointed out to me by my family how outdated our own house is. We were a family group of 10 in St David's for a wedding and I found little opportunity to escape such remarks. Ty Glasfryn was exceptionally appointed with masses of room for all ages to eat, play and be merry. For those tasked with supermarket visits, it could not have been more convenient: perhaps a 400m walk down the footpath opposite BUT beware taking those with playground leanings with you as there were also great distractions en route. Masses of places to walk and swim within a short drive. The hills above St David's Head beckoned daily.

The sun had only to wink and we were eating outside, thanks to the wide range of garden furniture. Our dogs slept in the car but it was a great relief that they could take the air by wandering outside within a securely fenced driveway.

Oh - I've always wanted an electric Aga; the dining room table is just a perfect size isn't it?; now this is a serious Nespresso machine; this dishwashers projects the time left to run onto the floor; that is a proper power shower; you can actually read in bed as the light is so good... I will obviously have to be more selective where my remaining children get married from.

Owner's Response: Thank you for all your fun comments! We have spent quite a few holidays at places where the comforts of home have sadly been missing so on setting Ty Glasfryn up for holiday lets, whilst we didn't include an over-the-top specification, we were determined to provide plenty of creature comforts which fortunately the house and gardens lend itself to. We just need to make sure there's time for us to visit too between lettings! Thank you again for this review, Liz and David

Perfect holiday house

  • 5 of 5

We have returned from a second holiday at Ty Glasfryn and had another wonderful time. Our young adults found it the perfect place to hang out, and with two spacious reception rooms and a beautiful kitchen and dining room, we all had plenty of room to relax and enjoyed eating in, helped by such a well equipped kitchen. We enjoy the proximity to St David's and the fact that we don't need to take out the cars, and yet still have access to a large garden, table tennis and a barbecue. We love the area with its beaches and coastal walks and hope to come back soon.

Owner's Response: Many thanks Jane and it was lovely to have your group stay again. As you say the area has plenty going on for you to enjoy and it sounds like Ty Glasfryn had enough facilities to keep the different generations entertained too! When we first saw the house we definitely thought it was a bonus to be able to leave the car in the drive and walk into St Davids. Thank you again from us both, Liz and David

This is a super place to stay within walking distance of St David's. Plenty of games and space - inside and out - so great for families with children. A joy to spend a week here.

Fantastic house!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a great weeks stay at 'TyG', the house is perfect, very well laid out, well equipped. Everything you need and more. All the bedrooms are lovely. Great kitchen diner and a large garden which our children thoroughly enjoyed. The outdoor shower was very handy after a day at the beach! We would not hesitate to return and were sad to leave. Liz the owner was excellent, great communication and very helpful.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments Helen - we're so glad you made the most of the garden as well as the beach by the sound of things. We thought the warm shower in the courtyard was going to get some use! So pleased the messages back and forth between us were useful - whenever we book a holiday like this we are well aware of the importance of being able to get hold of the owner. Maybe we'll be welcoming you back soon? Thanks again, Liz and David

Location

From the Owner

A position just on the edge of St Davids ticked pretty much all the boxes on our 'wish list' for a long-term base in Pembrokeshire. Visiting this area with our daughters from almost the day they were born our needs have changed from simple, quiet beaches with acres of sand to those with rock pools for catching shrimps, to harbours with jetties for crabbing, to surfing beaches, to long walks along the beautiful coastal path. On days of good old UK mixed weather, the Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, galleries, woollen mills, wood turning shops, etc are all nearby for you to visit and explore. Not forgetting the option for retail therapy or restaurants or welcoming pubs. Ty Glasfryn is a central base from where you can walk or drive to your favourite beach, cove, part of the coastal path or leave the car behind and walk into the 'City'!

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Caerfai - the nearest to us. It has it's own car park and nearby shop in the high season. It's about 10/15 minutes walk from Ty Glasfryn.

Whitesands - the main beach for St Davids just over 2 miles away. Facilities include a car park, cafe, toilets, surf school and wet suit hire, lifeguards. No dogs between 1st May and 30th September.

Newgale - huge at low tide! About 6 miles away. Parking, toilets, shop, cafe, surf school, kite surf. Some dog restrictions.

Many others to visit!

Travel:

Haverfordwest rail station is within 16 miles

Fishguard ferry and rail station is within 15 miles

Drive to the end of the M4 and keep going - plenty of dual carriageway to keep you moving!

There are regular local 'hopper' buses linking to places of interest (pick up point within 250m of Ty Glasfryn) and national bus services to/from St Davids. The use of a car however is recommended to explore the wider region.

Distances:

Centre of St Davids - 700m

Cathedral/Bishop's Palace - just off the central area

Nearest supermarket/bakery - 300m

Oriel Y Parc award winning visitors centre - 250m

Hopper bus stop - 250m

Coastal path - 1.25km (0.75 miles)

Caerfai beach - 1.35km (0.85 miles)

Whitesands beach - 3.6km (2.25 miles)

Further Details:

There are numerous activities in this area for you to explore, at all times of the year and in all weather conditions!

Just put 'St Davids' or 'Pembrokeshire Coast National park' in any search engine for a taste of what's on offer and a list of local events and activities.

Not surprisingly the St Davids Cathedral is the centrepiece of the 'City', which you can easily walk to from Ty Glasfryn. This is one of the most important ecclesiastical sites in Wales with the original church established here in the 6th Century. The current buildings - the ruin of the Bishop's Palace and the wonderful Cathedral, which is in full use today - stem from the 12th Century and are a 'must see' to appreciate their full splendour.

Don't think St Davids is a metropolis though - the resident population is only around 1,600 people!

Ty Glasfryn also sits within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park so apart from the many beaches, coves and the coastal path to explore there is the wonderful wildlife to admire and plenty of places to visit and activities to pursue.

Beyond the Cathedral and Bishop's Palace our favourites include the numerous galleries in St Davids and the wider area, the nearby villages and towns of Solva, Porthgain and Narberth, the local TYF Adventures for coasteering, surfing, sea kayaking & rock climbing, and Voyages of Discovery for boat trips. There's Ramsey Island, horse riding and pony trekking, sheep dog trials, woollen mills, pottery painting, gardens to explore and restaurants to enjoy - the list goes on!

Facilities

From the Owner

We ultimately chose this spot for it's peaceful and convenient location. You can walk to pick up the morning papers, visit the local bakery or any shop, restaurant and pub without needing a 'designated' driver! Equally we're only a short distance from everything St Davids and Pembrokeshire has to offer. Ty Glasfryn stood out for us due to the size and scale of the rooms, it's Victorian features and the overall 'feel' of the house when you walk through the front door. We were especially keen to create a home for both summer or winter visits which was as comfortable as possible. So we have invested in quality bedding, new showers and bathrooms, an Aga, woodburners, comfy sofas and many other conveniences. There's ample room for outdoor games, dining and relaxing should you choose an 'at home' day in the south facing garden.
