About Mrs Rebecca Maxwell Macdonald

We have lovingly restored and refurbished this family owned property for others to explore the history connected to it. We also run a nearby holiday park, 1 mile down the road, so not only are we on the doorstep for any little challenges that may occur we also have a wealth of knowledge of the tourism market and the local area.

Having travelled extensively ourselves as a couple and with our young family we have tried to create a holiday home that provides for everyone.

We look forward to welcoming you to Balure.

Mrs Rebecca Maxwell Macdonald purchased this house in 1949

Why Mrs Rebecca Maxwell Macdonald chose Campbeltown

Located on the beautiful Mull of Kintyre, there si so much to see and do in this very quiet and unspoilt corner of Scotland which clings onto the mainland by a 1 mile stretch of land at the top of the peninsular.

Wildlife abounds, sunsets never fail to amaze and the beaches are long, sandy...and peaceful.

As descendents of the Lords of the Isles and Flora Macdonald, our family have been in Kintyre since 1482.

This historic property was once the favoured holiday home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Lang

The scenery and the beauty of the area remains largely unchanged in all those years and is just waiting for you to follow in St Columbas footsteps and explore Kintyre from Balure House.

Nearby are the famous golf resorts at Machrihanish and the Springbank Whisky Distillery.

Local ferries make day trips to the islands of Islay, Gigha, Bute & Arran easily accessible.

Nearby is the fishing village of Tarbert - the seafood is amazing, freshly caught every day. Tarbert Seafood Festival - first w/e July.

What makes this house unique

Situated in mid Kintyre, Balure is a luxury holiday home boasting stunning views across to the islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha.

Set in 5 acres of private grounds including woodland, extensive gardens and paddock this is a nature lovers paradise and the gardens make for the best game of hide and seek for all the family.

Balure has 5 bedrooms inc 2 en-suite bedrooms. Newly fitted kitchen, drawing room, dining room and 2 snug/TV rooms plus laundry room & boot room. WiFi throughout.

The Games Lodge has been a really hit with guests enjoying pool, table tennis, darts and the outside decking to soak up the views!

Nearby is the owners holiday park which guests have access to with exclusive use of the private beach in close season.

There isn't a whiff of the meanness of your average self catering accommodation: plenty of large fluffy towels, logs for the wood burner (wow does she chuck out heat!), mugs for lots of tea (and teaspoons!), plenty of dishwasher tablets, cupboards well stocked, Rebecca even brought round freshly baked brownies! How's that for an amazing welcome after hours of travel?

Our bed was bigger than our bed at home (missing it now...) and linen was wonderfully soft.

The layout of the house was very good too. The kids had lots of space to play, yet we still felt connected as they were on the same floor. They loved the two staircases. The gardens were a treasure trove of places to explore. Rabbits, woodpecker and swallows were gorgeous to watch. We didn't even get round to exploring the games cabin, but I can see that would be a godsend for teenagers.

The location is perfect with views of Gigha, Cara, Islay and Jura. A massive sandy beach and playground just one mile away (Point Sands). I'd also recommend a trip to Gigha on the ferry, eat lunch at The Boathouse (booking recommended) and a trip to the twin beaches. Jaw-droppingly beautiful. The local pub at the Argyll Hotel serves excellent local produce and is situated on another beautiful beach. Westport beach is good for surfing. There was so much to do, we certainly didn't want to go home.

Rebecca was incredibly helpful with lots of ideas for things to do. Overall it was a very positive experience and we were very happy.

Beautiful, well situated to tour the area

  • 5 of 5

We had a large family gathering and Rebecca gave us a warm welcome with a friendly smile and home baking, the owners sent us good advice prior to our arrival for places to stop and visit or eat along with things to look out for on the journey. They provided everything we needed and were only ever a call away if needed. We had the best stay and look forward to returning to stay at Balure House it's all it says and the owners make you feel at home.
