About the Owner

We first visited The Lake District separately as children. Many years later on Honeymoon in the Lakes we made a promise to ourselves to own our own cottage before our 25th Anniversary. We kept our promise and purchased The Retreat just in time for our 25th Anniversary.

After much thought, effort, love and money we have now renovated the 150 year old former cattle shed into a luxury holiday retreat for ourselves and guests to enjoy.

Shh! Don't tell anyone, or they'll all come!

What a fabulous find! This little gem is hidden away at the top of a hill with lovely views over the lake. The cottage itself is immaculately kept and perfect for a short or longer stay. It's incredibly well appointed with everything you'd ever need to feel at home, right down to the lovely fresh flowers which greeted us on the windowsill - such a thoughtful touch. Not having to worry about bringing our own linen was a big bonus too.

The cottage is perfectly located for a stroll into town. The steep climb back up each day was worth it for the views and the exercise, which we certainly needed after all the food and drink we sampled! The Dalesway route is right there on the doorstep too, taking you as far as you like, although we only managed a few miles. There are very helpful suggestions of walking routes and places to go in the information book in the cottage. We were only sorry we couldn't be there longer and explore more.

Our favourite place for breakfast was #4. We tried other places, but came back here. They're open all day for other meals and snacks too. We tried lots of the pubs (would have been rude not to!) and particularly liked The Angel Inn, where we also had a good meal. Try Porto and Bodega to eat and the Fizzy Tarte champagne bar if that's your thing. Also the Arts Bar and Grill and The Country Hut (tiny but a great little bar). In fact, we didn't really come across anywhere we wouldn't be happy to go back to! Happy days!

Bowness is a great little town. You're spoilt for choice with restaurants, pubs and cafes, and the shops are really good too. It was great to see so many independent businesses and none of the usual chain stuff. Quality at reasonable prices all over the place. We preferred it to Windermere itself, and to Ambleside too, although Ambleside is definitely worth a visit for the lakeside walks. There are some nice walks around the lake, and the ferry trips are worth doing too.

Thanks so much Robert and Anne for sharing your beautiful little place with us. We had lots of fun and will definitely visit again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great feedback, it's always nice to hear our efforts are appreciated by our guests. It is important to us our guests enjoy thier precious time away. A cold beer in the garden (Windermere Pale) watching the lake and fells is also one of my relaxing pleasures. We have big plans for the garden and subject to planning (and the weather) we hope to have it completed by the end of the year. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back. Thanks again for your lovely comments.

Wonderful weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful long weekend at The Retreat with our two children aged 12 and 9. The cottage itself is beautiful, traditional with a clean, modern interior and is in a great location. Anne and Robert were very friendly and helpful, they were able to recommend places to visit and to eat, all of which were spot on. This was our first visit to the Lake District and we were all sad to leave, there's so much to see here. I would highly recommend a stay at The Retreat, we would be very happy to stay there again.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your great comments. We too love the Lakes and it's nice to read you and your family enjoyed our reccomendations. There is so much to do and see it's easy to keep all the family happy. Thank you for your kind comments on the cottage. We spent considerable time in the planning and execution of the refurbishment to ensure it met both our high standards and those of our guests who seek tranquility yet the facilities and attraction of the village and lake only a short stroll away. We are so pleased you all had a great time. Thanks again.

Great cottage, great location

  • 5 of 5

We booked the Retreat for half term week, not being too familiar with the area, so were extremely pleased to find ourselves in such a great location, only a 5 min (energetic) walk up from the main lakeside of Bowness. The property has recently been refurbished to a high standard and was very clean, comfortable, cosy and well equipped.

There are fantastic views from Brantfell just a short walk above the cottage, and, weather permitting(!), the sunset can be enjoyed from the garden.

Great access by foot to various attractions around Bowness/Windermere, e.g lake cruise, ferry to other side, 4 mile walk to Wray Castle (which our 2 boys (7&10) managed without too much complaint!),and well located for visiting further afield by car, though the traffic around Ambleside can get busy.

Note that you have to reverse either up or down the drive to the cottage as no turning space but we didn't find it a problem.

Overall couldn't fault the Retreat, it's a credit to the owners Anne & Robert, who were a pleasure to deal with, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a fantastic base for visiting the Lakes.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your fabulous comments, it is always pleasing for us to read our guests had a good time at The Retreat. It's nice you too enjoyed some of the many things directly from the door. The short easy walk up Brantfell behind the cottage gives fabulous 360 deg. views of the lake and surrounding fells. The nice easy walk to Wray Castle via the ferry, then home made cake before deciding whether to walk or take the boat to Ambleside. And my favourite (especially in summer), to sit in the garden with a bottle (or two) and watch the sun set over the lake as it drops behind Claiffe Hights opposite. Is is nice to read you too enjoyed these simple pleasures. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts and the great review. We hope you will return. Anne & Robert

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful few days away at this stylish and quiet retreat. The property is set up the hill from Bowness, less than 10 minutes walk to a number of decent pubs and restaurants. The walk back up the hill is invigorating and helps burn off a few of those calories. Anne, the owner is lovely to deal with, friendly helpful and efficient. The property has undergone a complete makeover, it is simple without being minimalist, very well equipped and cosy. Tons of great walking, starting right outside your doorstep, but if you want to hunker down with a glass of wine and a book, it's the perfect place. I'd highly recommend it.

From the Owner

It was love at first sight when we saw the cottage. From the quirky upside down layout to the beautiful tranquil setting. We knew instantly it was the one for us. We have spent much time love and money transforming the cottage to what we now feel is the perfect retreat for ourselves and our guests. Each season at The Retreat is magical from crisp cold days snuggled in by the log burner to summer evenings spent in the garden watching the sun set over Claiffe Heights. Enjoy a summer evening barbeque in the courtyard garden furninshed with a local slate bench and good quality table and chairs.
