About the Owner

We first visited The Lake District separately as children. Many years later on Honeymoon in the Lakes we made a promise to ourselves to own our own cottage before our 25th Anniversary. We kept our promise and purchased The Retreat just in time for our 25th Anniversary.

After much thought, effort, love and money we have now renovated the 150 year old former cattle shed into a luxury holiday retreat for ourselves and guests to enjoy.

Wonderfully relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful cottage. Feels secluded and private but with very easy access to Bowness and the south lakes. It was a perfect place to get away from it all. The cottage is very tastefully decorated, with extremely cosy lounge and log burner, modern kitchen with everything you could need and comfy bed in a lovely dark bedroom. The garden with views of lake windemere would be ideal in warmer weather. Would highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your nice comments. It's nice to read you enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the location, whilst also benefiting from the amenities in the village, a short stroll down the hill. We have plans for the garden and hope to start our project soon, building a raised decking area. We hope you will return in the summer to enjoy the garden more.

Gorgeous cottage in fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

My family have just returned from a fabulous week at The Retreat. The cottage is beautiful, located right at the top of a hill in Bowness overlooking the lovely lake. It is equipped to a high standard and the log burner was a real treat. However, the weather was very kind to us so only needed to light it once to experience a real fire for ourselves!

We walked miles around Grasmere, Rydal, Elterwater, Blea Tarn the Langdales and Grizedale Forest. The children loved the Treetop Trek at Brockhole too.The scenic autumnal colours we encountered, were simply stunning. After a full days walking, it was great to return the car to The Retreat and meander down into Bowness for dinner. We enjoyed tapas at Bodega, an Italian at Villa Positano and traditional at The Angel Inn - all worth a visit. A great, sunny week - we would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your nice comments. It's important to us our guests enjoy their time at our cottage. We too love the log burner on a cool Autumn or winters eve after being out in the beautiful countryside. Autumn is so colourful it is wonderful. We considered wifi but remain undecided as to whether it will spoil the tranquility. Thanks again.

Shh! Don't tell anyone, or they'll all come!

What a fabulous find! This little gem is hidden away at the top of a hill with lovely views over the lake. The cottage itself is immaculately kept and perfect for a short or longer stay. It's incredibly well appointed with everything you'd ever need to feel at home, right down to the lovely fresh flowers which greeted us on the windowsill - such a thoughtful touch. Not having to worry about bringing our own linen was a big bonus too.

The cottage is perfectly located for a stroll into town. The steep climb back up each day was worth it for the views and the exercise, which we certainly needed after all the food and drink we sampled! The Dalesway route is right there on the doorstep too, taking you as far as you like, although we only managed a few miles. There are very helpful suggestions of walking routes and places to go in the information book in the cottage. We were only sorry we couldn't be there longer and explore more.

Our favourite place for breakfast was #4. We tried other places, but came back here. They're open all day for other meals and snacks too. We tried lots of the pubs (would have been rude not to!) and particularly liked The Angel Inn, where we also had a good meal. Try Porto and Bodega to eat and the Fizzy Tarte champagne bar if that's your thing. Also the Arts Bar and Grill and The Country Hut (tiny but a great little bar). In fact, we didn't really come across anywhere we wouldn't be happy to go back to! Happy days!

Bowness is a great little town. You're spoilt for choice with restaurants, pubs and cafes, and the shops are really good too. It was great to see so many independent businesses and none of the usual chain stuff. Quality at reasonable prices all over the place. We preferred it to Windermere itself, and to Ambleside too, although Ambleside is definitely worth a visit for the lakeside walks. There are some nice walks around the lake, and the ferry trips are worth doing too.

Thanks so much Robert and Anne for sharing your beautiful little place with us. We had lots of fun and will definitely visit again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great feedback, it's always nice to hear our efforts are appreciated by our guests. It is important to us our guests enjoy thier precious time away. A cold beer in the garden (Windermere Pale) watching the lake and fells is also one of my relaxing pleasures. Location

From the Owner

It was love at first sight when we saw the cottage. From the quirky upside down layout to the beautiful tranquil setting. We knew instantly it was the one for us. We have spent much time love and money transforming the cottage to what we now feel is the perfect retreat for ourselves and our guests. Each season at The Retreat is magical from crisp cold days snuggled in by the log burner to summer evenings spent in the garden watching the sun set over Claiffe Heights. Enjoy a summer evening barbeque in the courtyard garden furninshed with a local slate bench and good quality table and chairs.
