About anne parker

We first visited The Lake District separately as children. Many years later on Honeymoon in the Lakes, we made a promise to ourselves to own our own cottage before our 25th Anniversary. We kept our promise and purchased The Retreat just in time for our 25th Anniversary.

After much thought, effort, love and money we have now renovated the 150 year old former cattle shed into a luxury holiday retreat for ourselves and guests to enjoy.

anne parker purchased this cottage in 2013

Why anne parker chose Bowness-on-Windermere

It was love at first sight when we saw the cottage. From the quirky upside down layout to the beautiful tranquil setting. We knew instantly it was the one for us. We have spent much time love and money transforming the cottage to what we now feel is the perfect retreat for ourselves and our guests. Each season at The Retreat is magical from crisp cold days snuggled in by the log burner to summer evenings spent in the garden watching the sun set over Claiffe Heights. Enjoy a summer evening barbeque in the courtyard garden furninshed with a local slate bench and good quality table and chairs.

What makes this cottage unique

We have lovingly renovated the cottage, working closely with local tradesmen to ensure it's Lakeland character was retained. We took the opportunity to add extra features to give the Retreat it's uniqueness and special feel.

New for summer 2017 - A raised deck to the side garden allows our guests to enjoy views over the lake.

Charming well eqipped cottage ideally situated for exploring Windemere and the Lake District

  • 5 of 5

This was the ideal place to stay for our long weekend of discovering the Lake district and engaging in plenty of walking and rambling. The cottage comprised two levels, ideal for removing our walking garb without compromising the fine, well equipped living area, with all its amenities. The large external balcony provided outdoor relaxation together with fine views of Lake Windemere. The charming town of Bowness was a mere walk away. A cottage to be recommended

Beautiful, quaint cottage!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our pre-Christmas stay here. Bowness is a lovely village and it’s just a 5 minute walk from the cottage. It was perfect for our needs (a family of four!) in every way and I would definitely like to stay again. Top marks!!!!

Owner's Response: We love the Lakes, every season is different but Christmas time is very special. Just before the main holiday period is quieter and a good time to fully relax before the festivities. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and that you hope to return for longer during the summer. Many thanks for your nice comments. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back.

A cosy and well located cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very well appointed, had everything we needed. The location a short walk from Bowness has a good choice of restaurants for an evening meal and is easy for access to the south lakes for walking during the day. We had a very enjoyable holiday.

Beautiful cottage in a fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

We stay in self catering cottages 2-3 times a year and this is by far one of the best we have rented. Fitted out to a really high standard, modern but still very cosy. The location was perfect-close to Bowness (with a fairly steep walk back to the cottage to burn off the ice creams, fudge and local beer!!). The outside terrace has great views-even in November, it was good to spend time out there. We definitely hope to return.

Beautiful cottage in a wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely 4 night stay here for a few days of the Autumn half term. There are 4 of us - me, my wife, my 14 year old son and my 9 year old daughter.

The cottage is in superb condition and extremely well fitted out. The view from the garden of Lake Windermere is a real bonus too! As it was wet (October in The Lakes!), we didn't sit out in the garden but anyone coming during spring or summer would be able to have their meals there - wonderful opportunity.

You can walk the round of Bowness/end of the Dales Way from the cottage (we did a very pleasant 4-5 mile circuit) and the village centre is a short (but steep!) walk away.

I would have awarded 5 stars. However, we weren't keen on the parking - it's a good few yards down a very tight lane. We ended up parking out in the street as I nearly pranged the car. If you're a confident parker (which neither of us are) it shouldn't be any problem and I would highly recommend the cottage.

Owner's Response: It’s nice to read you and your family have had an enjoyable time at The Retreat. Hopefully next time the weather will be better and you can enjoy the sun deck. We love the Lakes for family time and whilst the weather in Autumn can be mixed, the colours are absolutely beautiful. We’re pleased you found many of the walks direct from door, it’s a nice way to enjoy your day. Sorry to hear you struggled with the parking, it is a long drive and best to drive in and reverse out. Private parking is a premium in The Lakes. Many thanks for your lovely review. We are pleased you and your family had a wonderful time.
