Great Villa With Lots Of Space
We have just got back from a wonderful holiday to celebrate my two children's birthdays with my husband and his mum.It was only a short simple drive from Castellón airport. The village was signposted as soon as we left the airport. We were met at the villa and given a quick tour and given some recommendations for the area. The rooms were all lovely and spacious and well kept. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything you could ever need, It meant when preparing meals I could do so easily. We did have a slight issue with the freezer not working but after checking the plug we found it had become unplugged. Once it was plugged back we had no further issues. All of the beds were comfy and there was plenty of draw and wardrobe space to store our clothes. The master bed was especially comfy and being superking it meant there was more than enough room for both my kids to climb in, as being young and being on holiday they would join us early in the morning as they were too excited to sleep. It got a little chilly at night but with central heating throughout it meant we were warm and cosy. There is a log burner in the lounge which also helped warm the villa at night, this made for cosy nights in, in front of the fire.We attempted the pool once but it was too cold, we left it alone and decided to explore the surrounding area instead. The village itself is beautiful with lots to see and explore. There is a local tourist information centre which provides a map of all the places to visit. There are also information signs in multiple languages to explain what things are. The square is lovely to sit in and watch the world go by, most of the eateries has wifi making it easy enough to check in with people at home. The locals speak limited english, but with the use of a spanish dictionary we made it through the week. my mother in law stepped in to babysit one night so my husband could take me out to a local restaurant. we couldn't believe how cheap it was to eat out, we got a bottle of wine, bottle of water, salad, bread, starter, main and dessert for 23 euro. There are two local supermarkets as well as local shops providing us with enough choice to keep everyone well catered for. I will add that the shops take a siesta and do not open on a sunday. This meant if we wanted to go shopping it had to be in the morning or evening. We cant wait to stay again and will be recommeding to family and friends.
Surprisingly spacious launch-pad
We found the villa to be a surprisingly spacious launch-pad either for walking into the delightful town of San Mateu itself, or from which to drive to the coast for days out by the wonderfully clear and warmish waters of the Castellon coast.
The centre-piece of the property has to be the lovely little private swimming pool. It’s not heated but even in the second week of September when temperatures were considerable there was nothing more refreshing than to gingerly descend the steps to the cooling waters within. A nice touch is the retractable awning by the house so that those, like myself, whose ‘going for the burn’ days are long-gone can hide in the shade and sip cold beer in between pool plunges.
With four very well maintained bathrooms, you are unlikely to encounter too many family arguments whilst the kitchen is spacious enough for everyone to have their own agenda. Speaking of which, if the pool side conversations become too over-powering, why, just wander round to the back of the property and chill out in silence on the rear veranda.
Great efforts were made by the property manager to ensure that we had full international TV programming even though we haven’t the slightest intention of watching TV when on holiday in Spain!
Regarding the town itself, I would recommend brushing up on your rudimentary Spanish as English is not widely spoken. Having said that I am grateful to my teenage son for adding the Google Translate App onto my iPhone. Menus in Spanish? No matter! Hover your phone above it and miraculously the menu reads in English! Beware: the tapas portions are very big and for three adults with wine, it was hard to part with more than 40 Euros after each evening's restaurant meal.
Finally for beach lovers: head to one of the two horse-shoe bays at Vinaros. The beaches are immaculate, the waters wonderful and if you are particularly lazy, three sunbeds with parasol come at just 12 Euros total (well it was in September).
Thank you to Terry and Chris for assuming the role not just of friendly guardians of the property, but enthusiastic and bonhomie residents of this charming old town.
Great villa with private pool
A Lovely comfortable and spacious private property with everything you could need for the perfect relaxing holiday. The villa has a range of indoor and outdoor seating areas, spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and the kitchen is very well equipped. And of course it's own pool which is well maintained.
The town of Sant Mateu is quiet and peaceful yet full of character with its historic buildings, churches and its main square which has ample cafes and bars - and well within walking distance of the villa . We've booked again for next year, which says it all.
Brilliant Villa in a Great Location
The previous reviews sum up the villa, our experience of the villa , location and holiday were exceptional. We have taken villa holidays for the past 10 years and this was by far the most pleasant experience from beginning to end in every way. Terry is a great host, professional and lovely to deal with. We are definitely looking to return.
Excellent villa in lovely small town
The villa was very spacious, clean and well equipped. You can tell that it has been a family home. It is better than the description in many ways and is plenty big enough for at least 6 people. The superking size bed is very comfortable and having a downstairs bathroom (as well as the en suite to bedroom 3) was handy. The pool was lovely too. The only possible downside is traffic noise but it did not spoil our stay in any way. San Mateu is a delight, probably the most pleasant town or village we saw in the area. Terry was very welcoming and responded to emails quickly during the booking process.
We visited Farga restaurant at lunchtime - good value at €25 including wine although my fish was raw and had to go back to the kitchen. Perdi restaurant was closed for holidays but we enjoyed Ka Nostra in the square; the octopus tapa was particularly good. Other restaurants looked fine too.
Sant Mateu is well placed as a base for visits. We toured the Ebro Delta & this was well worth while though it takes more like an hour to reach good observation spots. Alcossbre looked fine for a day out at the sea and beach. Peniscola is much busier and more developed but attractive with good beaches too. Exploring the area is fascinating with many hilltop towns and villages. Morella is dramatic but so are others. The roads may have numerous hairpin bends but they are good and not that busy. Indeed the whole area has miles of quiet well cultivated valleys with very few houses to be seen.
Shopping - Espadrilles from La Juana in Salzadella are a must!
We were not familiar with this part of Spain but found it and Sant Mateu itself delightful with the villa being an ideal place to stay. The pool was a big bonus. All in all we cannot recommend this highly enough.
Faultless ...everything you could possibly want from a villa. Everything you would ever need in the kitchen lovely pool and BBQ area comfy lounge furniture ,and the tempur King size bed an absolute god send would recommend throughly especially for those who wish to go out and explore the beautiful Spanish country side rather than join the crowds on the costas . Already dreaming of my next visit .
Activity and Interests
The beaches of the Costa del Azahar are from 30 minutes drive away.
Car hire is recommended and the village is ideally suited and located just a short drive away from the Spanish motorway network. The villa is served by 3 main airports, the nearest being Castellon, just 20 minutes away and also by Valencia and Reus, both approximately 1 hour 15 minutes drive away or Barcelona Airport which is approximately 2.5 hours drive away.
The villa is just 5 minutes from the centre of Sant Mateu where you can find everything you would need for your holiday. The larger town of Vinaros is just 30 minutes drive away. The city of Valencia with its museums, art galleries etc. is about 1 hour 25 minutes by car. There is a wealth of exciting and interesting places in the area for those that wish to explore such as Morella, Peniscola, Ebro Delta nature reserve and the Lakes of La Senia.
Within the village you will find a supermarket, butchers, fishmongers, bakeries, general stores, banks, petrol station, pharmacies, typical Spanish restaurants and bars and the famous Roman wash houses! In the Plaza Mayor you can enjoy local cuisine such as paella, tapas and specialist dishes. You can enjoy ice cold Cervezas or blood red Sangria!
