Waldron, Heathfield, E Sussex - Secluded but a Short Walk To The Village With A Fabulous Pub And Shop

It is hard to find the real countryside so easily accessible from central London, Gatwick or Heathrow Airports. Waldron is perfect in every way. A lovely little village complete with gastro pub and a romantic church and all set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Our home is totally private with views over the South Downs to the sea at Beachy Head yet within commuter distance from central London and only 30 minutes from the South Coast of England.

About Beth Cook

Hello,

I am the owner of Old Glebe and Les Bosses. I live and work in London but plan to spend my retirement in the countryside, hence having these two lovely houses which I dont have enough time to enjoy.

My houses are personal properties and are very different. Les Bosses, is a charming simple cottage set in very peaceful rural Brittany. Old Glebe and Stable Cottage are perfect for large family gatherings, weddings and landmark parties and only an hour on the train from London.

I hope you enjoy your holiday, I am always very happy in both places and delighted to share them with you!

Why Beth Cook chose Heathfield

Old Glebe is a British Rural idyll. Peace and quiet, big skies, views of the South Downs and the coast beyond. All this just 60 minutes from central London on the train.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The house and stable cottage are perfect for a family get together, landmark birthday or break. The house has a huge dining room table for a lovely long dinner party and the grounds offer plenty of activities from Tennis, Football, Swimming Pool (May-Oct), Trampoline, Croquet etc.

Being only an hour by train from London you can spend more time enjoying life and keep travel to a minimum.

Old Glebe is perfectly situated close to the village, but private in its own grounds. It makes a great base to explore the South Coast, South Downs and the villages of East Sussex and Kent.

NB: Whilst we are very private, noise carries down to the village and out of respect for our neighbours we request all music to stop at midnight and limited noise outside after 11pm.

Notes on accommodation: The Big House and Stable Cottage are ideal for families or groups of friends (over the age of 30 years). There are 10 bedrooms of which 5 are huge and 5 are average of which 2 are small, but comfortable. The fact that the house is so private (set in 30 acres of garden and farmland) yet only a short walk from Waldron with its lovely gastro pub (The Star) and village shop/café, plus only one hour's commute to central London means this is an ideal country retreat. To be within daily commuter distance of London, a stone's throw from the village facilities, 30 minutes from the south coast and with a stunning view of the South Downs is remarkable. The Old Glebe offers you the best of all worlds. Outside: The house is up a long cherry tree lined drive, safe for children and dogs. With sweeping lawns, wooded areas (with hammocks, camp fires and view of the sunset), a kitchen garden and orchard (help yourselves) and plenty of space to explore and have fun/play games. Stable Cottage is just beyond the house, within easy reach for groups of friends or quite private if rented separately. There are even some stables and a paddock if a pony needs to come along too (by separate arrangement). There are outside games including football pitch on the tennis, a trampoline, heated swimming pool and croquet. In summer hammocks are strung up offering a lovely place to relax in the shade. There are swings in the trees of the little copse. Strict Pool Rules must be observed for your own safety. The pool has an electric safety cover. Open May - Oct. Old Glebe is wonderful for the imagination and to have an adventure in your own space and land. Utility Room: Big House: Washing machine, laundry line, outside washing lines, iron and ironing board, etc. Stable Cottage: Washing machine, iron and ironing board, etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning during your stay by arrangement priced at £15 per hour. After stay clean is included in the price if house left tidy and organized with everything back in place. Linen included. Pets charged at £10 per night per pet Broadband/WIFI which can be slow with 20 people all logged in.

A beautiful property in a stunning peaceful location. Everything you would want or need is provided,

A gorgeous family home set in wonderful grounds. Spring blossoms abundant framing a beautiful house. A large family - 6 siblings and their children - needed a place we could all stay together whilst our sister got married nearby and for a few days afterwards to relax. 10 bedrooms of varying sizes but all with very comfortable beds, luxurious bedding and either ensuite or access to a bathroom. The attic room can sleep 8 people as long as you don't mind sharing! Wonderful kitchen/ dining space which is the heart of the building - a fabulous place to congregate for meals. A CD player with inbuilt ceiling speakers added music to our celebrations. This place feels special whilst homely. There are enough places to explore that 24 of us didn't feel crowded in. A large lounge, separate games room and snug provides enough space to have some downtime. The separate cottage is as lovely as the main house - some lovely period features entwined with modern (awesome lampshades, sinks and toilets!!) The bank holiday weather surpassed itself so we were able to fully enjoy the swimming pool and tennis court. Such fab sunshine we felt we were abroad! The owners clearly want you to enjoy the property and make yourself at home. There are a few sensible rules to adhere to but you don't feel restricted in any way. We enjoyed a BBQ and a roast dinner and all managed to get a seat at a table with lots of arm room (usually unheard of at family gatherings!). We didn't really explore the surrounding areas as we were enjoyjng being together at the house so much. There's ample storage, fridges so you can cater for yourself and 2 dishwashers to take the pressure off washing up! The house has wooden flooring throughout which is beautiful (and convenient) but does carry noise a bit so be prepared to know when early risers are awake! Little touches all over the house (toiletries, slippers, books, games etc) make you feel very welcome. The owner Laura (and Beth) have been helpful and gracious throughout the booking process. The whole family has positively commented on how wonderful Old Glebe is. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed their stay - again no mean feat which such a big family. Children and adults alike were in their element enjoying which ever bit of Old Glebe suited them. We would thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay to enjoy the house, beautiful gardens and surroundings and each other's company. Wonderful family memories made to treasure for always. Thank you.

A wonderful venue in a stunning setting

We booked this venue for a family gathering of fifteen to celebrate a joint 70th birthday and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Old Glebe. We loved the house from first sight and it proved ideal for our family group which comprised of three generations with each of the family able to spread out and relax in the spacious accommodation of the main house and stable cottage.

We were fortunate with the weather but on one chilly day enjoyed the benefit of a log fire in the lounge which was lovely.

Some of our party managed to make use of the heated outside pool, trampoline and the tennis court and we had great fun playing croquet on the front lawn and it was also good to be able to play table tennis indoors on the cooler day.

A lot of adult time was spent gathered in the spacious kitchen and the lounge and the children were able to find plenty of places to retire to such as the snug or games room.

All in all, a wonderful venue for any special occasion and we very much look forward to returning to Old Glebe again.

Fantastic house for large group or family!!

This property is fabulous. It is very well equipped for adults and children both indoors and outdoors. The pool, tennis court and trampoline were firm favourites with the children and the grounds are simply beautiful. Inside there is lots of space and the bedrooms and bathrooms are decorated very nicely. The children loved sleeping in the upstairs ‘dorm’ room!! The weather was fabulous and we even enjoyed lunch in the local pub. Beth was very helpful with our booking and arrangements too. Everyone enjoyed a brilliant weekend and we hope to return next year.

Charming, modern & spacious in a wonderful setting

The Old Glebe is spacious, modern and luxuriously charming - everything we hoped it would be for a special birthday weekend gathering. The bedrooms were comfortable, welcoming and spotless, the kitchen was a truly social place to cook, eat and chat (perfect for self-catering), and the lounge/snug great for relaxing (or playing table tennis!), lighting a fire and admiring the views. The separate cottage was also brilliant. The grounds are extensive and well-maintained and we played all sorts of games including lots of swimming in the outdoor pool in April - the water was lovely and warm. We received lots of info/recommendations/communications from the owner in advance and everything was extremely well explained in the house pack. We would thoroughly recommend this venue for groups of all ages. In the local area we had lunch in the village pub, played golf, went for walks, travelled to the coast and popped into town. The sort of house you dream of living in one day!

A perfect venue for a family Christmas

Our family spent the most perfect Christmas week imaginable at Old Glebe. The kitchen was the hub of the house where everyone congregated. With the huge dining table at one end and the cooking facilities at the other, there is still room left for a large sofa and two trestle tables for great grandchildren's colouring and adult jigsaw enthusiasts! With four generations ranging from one to ninety there was never a dull moment and we all went home with so many happy memories.

Beautiful Property with glorious views.

It was my surprise 60th birthday party and one of the surprises for me was finding myself and all my oldest friends staying in this beautifully put together property for the whole weekend. We were lucky and had fabulous weather so used the pool, the tennis court and the croquet set. We had lunch outside both days and managed to seat 18 people round the main kitchen table in the evening. We loved the log fires which are always a treat and played games every evening. We all found the property so relaxing and felt at home in it very quickly which again helped to make this a weekend I will never forget.

Special interest holidays:

The house is ideal for a Yoga Retreat or Tennis & Swimming. The large pool is heated from mid May to end October with an electric cover. Local riding stables. 15 mins from Glyndebourne Opera House.

This is the only house we know with a football pitch on the tennis court. Easy to remove net, converts court into pitch with full size 7 a side goals. No astros.

The local Gliding school also offers courses.

Coast/Beach:

Waldron is just north of the South Downs, Eastbourne and Beachy Head. We are about 35 minutes drive from Brighton and about 30 minutes from Tunbridge Wells.

Travel:

Gatwick Airport - 45 minutes drive (£50 taxi)

Heathrow Airport - 90 minutes drive

Buxted British Rail Station - 4 miles (10 minutes drive) - approx. 1 hour to London Bridge or Clapham Junction.

Distances:

Waldron with pub/café/shop/church - is 1/4 mile

Heathfield with supermarket and all facilities - is 4 miles

Brighton/Eastbourne - is 35 - 40 minutes drive

Central London - is 1 1/2 hours drive.

Further Details:

This area of East Sussex has so many fabulous attractions that we could not mention them all. From Goodwood Race Course to Bewly Water Park, The South Downs National Park, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Brighton Marina etc. It would be very possible to spend a month in the house and visit a new attraction each day.

PLEASE NOTE: Whilst we are very private we are in a slightly raised location and noise travels. There is to be NO LOUD MUSIC outside at any time of day and evening parties must have the music turned off at midnight. Please be kind to our neighbours - apparently whilst they are two fields away they can hear every track since the noise travels down from our elevated position.
