This apartment has a genuine 'WOW' factor as soon as you step onto its spacious and private balcony. It is the perfect location for a romantic getaway for two, or, with its security and privacy, it is ideal for the solo traveller. Just imagine waking up to these views every morning. The fun of people-watching during the day, gazing down at the fish in the clear waters below, the occasional sighting of dolphins off the headland, enjoying the late evening sun (over a glass of sangria, of course!), then dinner al fresco or in the village – followed by the peace of the balcony with an unfettered view of the night sky that allows you to watch for shooting stars. And because of the lack of light pollution, night time offers a simply breathtaking vista of the cosmos so clear that even the Milky Way is quite clearly visible above. And when the day is done you can head off to the generous kingsize bed where you will be lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping sound of the waves beneath you...

About Fiona

Having spent most of my life in and around St Albans and endured the London rat race for too many years I decided to make a break for freedom some 5 years ago and moved with my partner (Sam) to a quiet village near Cardiff. While it took some time to adapt to the culture shock (complete strangers passing you by on the pavement say "Good morning/afternoon"!) it is a really beautiful part of the country and a great place to bring up children. As a family we have been coming to Menorca for the about 40 years and have owned the apartment for about 30. Although now in their late 70s/80s, my parents still enjoy staying there and my Dad puts me to shame as he zips up the stairs then heads down to the beach for a swim out to the headland. But then, somebody has to stay back to chill the sangria!

Why Fiona chose Cala en Porter

We first fell in love with Menorca. Then Cala'n Porter. I still remember the first time we visited this apartment with the estate agent - it was complete love at first sight. Thirty years on and still with every visit the purest, most undiluted 'WOW' factor hits me when I arrive.

I've travelled extensively worldwide but this is the place I always do - and always will - return to. In the bay below the vast ever-changing tapestry of life weaves a hundred different stories every day, while the pure majesty of the night sky simply has to be seen to be appreciated. (However, after a great many experiences, I can categorically say that wishing on a shooting star simply doesn't work!)

And the Menorquins are as warm as their island - the only thing that surpasses both is their ice cream!

What makes this apartment unique

As a resort, I love Cala'n Porter as it has everything you could need and is also very safe.

The apartment and the island genuinely reflect a home-away-from-home for us. You can enjoy as much of the holiday experience as you wish either in the village or down on the beach and then be back enjoying the peace and privacy of the apartment and away from the hubbub in a matter of minutes.

Everything you could want is within a short walk, so after a hard day's relaxation, you can enjoy an evening walk around the shops, go for dinner or cocktails, or head to one of the nightclubs (which are open until 4am) … but then you can come back to the quiet of the apartment and fall asleep with the gentle lapping of the water beneath you - and prepare yourself to do it all over again the following day!

Special interest holidays:

The island boasts a wealth of historical features, from the primitive taulas and navetas unique to the island to the historic port cities of Ciutadella and Mahon with their mixture of cultures from the Spanish, Moors, French and British.

Coast/Beach:

A lovely clean and safe beach with good facilities. It has a gently shelving sandy shoreline, becoming deep enough to enjoy snorkeling or a longer swim. You can hire pedaloes to explore the bay or even venture out a little futher to see the old pirate caves at Xoroi.

Beyond the beach the sands melt into a reserve with a nature trail which goes around the whole island.

Beside the beach is a selection of excellent bars and restaurants, while a beach shop sells everything from lilos to lotion.

Travel:

While everything you require for the perfect relaxing holiday can be found in Cala'n Porter, there is also a regular bus service running into Mahon.

There is a taxi rank in the village, as well as a company which arranges trips ranging from boat rides to excursions around the island and evening visits to whichever of the towns may be having a fiesta celebration (of which there are many during the summer months!)

While a hire car is a nicety it is certainly not a necessity.

Distances:

Cala'n Porter is about 15 minutes from the airport (at a cost of about 20 euros by taxi). It takes about 20 minutes by car to the centre of Mahon city and about 45 minutes to drive to Ciutadella at the far end of the island.

Further Details:

Cala'n Porter is a resort that the British love - with good reason - and have very much made their own. Although it retains a very spanish feel to it, you will find that the language is not a barrier and many of the locals speak embarrassingly excellent English.

The village has bars, restaurants and nightclubs (including the must-see Caves of Xoroi) to suit every taste and budget. You will also find a variety of shops as well as a tobacconist (from mid-June to mid-September), hairdresser, post office, bank, small medical centre and chemist.

There are three main supermarkets, all of which deliver for free and are very well stocked from toothbrushes to Tetley teabags to beach towels – so don't worry about packing the kitchen sink!

If your preference is for a day lounging by the swimming pool, there are several in the vicinity. The nearest (and probably best!) is less than a 10 minute walk away and the full facilities can be used just by buying a soft drink (about 1 euro).

In the apartment you will find a very comprehensive guide which covers the apartment, resort and the island. You will also find details of the local property management company who look after the apartment and provide a 24/7 emergency number which you can contact to reach an English-speaking local should you need it. Hopefully you won't – but it always helps for peace of mind to know that there is someone available to help if required.

  • The bathroom has the rarely found benefit of an actual bath! There is also an overhead shower in the bath. A large mirror cabinet is fixed over the sink with an integral light and there is a shaver point. In addition to the w/c there is also a bidet.

Notes on accommodation: The balcony is southerly facing and enjoys the sun from around 10.30am until sunset. It faces open countryside on the far side of the bay which is not open to the general public and therefore ensures you are not overlooked. The apartment benefits from being built into the actual cliff face at the rear, as this helps to keep the place cool, as do the gentle sea breezes. All the windows have mosquito net blinds, so you can always have the windows fully open to enjoy the full ambiance of the setting without having to worry about any pesky critters getting in! The apartment is charmingly furnished in a simple, traditional Menorcan style. Outside: The apartment's French doors can be opened up completely to naturally extend your living area into the balcony, where you will find a table, chairs and loungers. There are only a handful of places in Menorca available for rent with this stunning view and strict planning regulations ensure that this will remain the case. No building is allowed on the cliffside opposite the apartment, ensuring that you are not overlooked and to the left you can enjoy fabulous views of the beach and nature reserve beyond while to the right you can enjoy spectacular views of the open sea. Unlike the majority of apartments in Cala'n Porter, when you look down you will not see the roofs of other villas but instead the clear waters of the bay. The sea here is so clear that you can look down from the balcony and see fish swimming in the sea below, while on a still day the small boats moored in the bay appear to be floating in mid-air! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Fresh hand and bath towels as well as bed linen are provided for your arrival. These are changed on a weekly basis for guests staying for two or more weeks. You will need to bring your own beach towels for use on the balcony and outside of the apartment. Other: The balcony is effectively an outdoor room, as it is partially covered by a roof to give shade from the midday sun - so should you encounter a brief Mediterranean shower, you won't be stuck completely indoors!

Spectacular location

I have just returned from a week with my 2 teenage children. The apartments views are absolutely spectacular and we could have just sat on the balcony for the week..... amazing.

The apartment was clean but basic and dated, it had all we needed, but we really only used it to sleep in and have breakie. I must point out that there are total 257 steps to get to the beach, 81 from the apartment to the pavement. We are a very fit active family but this was really hard work in the heat, especially carrying our beach bags and there is no way of avoiding the apartment steps, if you have a car you can drive to the beach but it is really too far to walk.

The village is small but has all you need with a wonderful safe atmosphere. The resturants are happy to cook meals not on the menu (we are vegetarians) and they were delicious.

There is also a very small clothes and accessories market twice a week.

There is an easy bus system that can take you all over the island.

We had a wonderful time and would recommend the apartment even for the views alone they are really very special.

Extremely disappointing.

On arrival one is immediately impressed by the balcony and the stunning view of the beach and surrounding area. However, that was the only impressive thing about the apartment. The apartment sadly was not clean and in fact was rather scruffy and dirty on our arrival. The first stop was the supermarket to purchase some bleach to clean the bathroom, kitchen and floors. The owner sent us lots of information and instructions prior to our holiday but it would seem that whoever was in the apartment previously obviously did not read or adhere to the very clear instructions. Outdoor furniture had to be cleaned before sitting on it and the cover on the sofa inside was very dirty and on removing unearthed cobwebs and dead insects down the back of it.

Fortunately the bed had clean linen and the bedroom was cleaner although the paintwork required cleaning.

The view was wonderful and the balcony huge. Lots of restaurants and supermarkets nearby and a lovely beach. Would go back to Menorca but would not go back to this apartment. There are much nicer apartments available for the same price. All in all very disappointing.

Best location in Cala en Porter

Will be going back to this apartment for the 4th time in a few weeks. The most stunning location, fabulous balcony, and lovely clean apartment, and as a solo traveller perfect for all my needs. Fiona is a pleasure to deal with as, always accommodating and really helpful both before and during visits. I can't wait to get back to my wee home from home! I would say this apartment is ideal for either singles or couples.

The most beautiful location in Cala en Porter

I have stayed in this beautiful apartment for either one or two weeks for the last three years, and booked for this summer. As a solo traveller, Fiona was more than accommodating in answering all my questions beforehand, and went out of her way to help during my holiday as well. A gorgeous little home from home for me now, with amazing views from the huge balcony, and a fab central location to travel the whole island from, as well as having an incredibly safe and secure feeling. I can imagine I will be coming here for years to come, and would definitely recommend it to either solo travellers, or couples.

What a Fantastic Holiday

If you like to holiday close to the sea this is your place, the views from the balcony both by day and by night are stunning. Although the apartment is quite compact the balcony more than makes up for this, and as on holiday we spend more time outiside than in, this was not a problem. The walk up and down the 84 steps is well worth it. It is very close to the airport and you dont necessarily need a car as there is a good bus service, although we did hire one and it was very nice seeing a bit more of the island, it is a very steep climb back from the beach so the car was handy. We will definately return some time in the future.

While the 'official' time for arrivals is after 2pm and is by 10am for departures, wherever possible we try to arrange the cleaning schedules to enable our guests to have use of the apartment for as long as they require it.
The changeover day is Friday.

The prices shown are applicable for a couple staying for one week. Please enquire if your needs differ, as we may be able to accommodate a third person (sleeping on the sofa bed).
