A charming and beautifully modernised old farmhouse in a tiny hamlet, overlooking vineyards and sunflowers in the heart of the Tarn 'golden triangle', between Gaillac, Albi and Cordes-sur-ciel. Surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful countryside, many villages classed in the 'Les Plus belles villages de France' category. Four bedrooms, one with up to five beds. All new, fine clean linen and towels. High Standards! A huge terrace on two levels leading off form the very large kitchen, down through enchanting gardens to lawns and heated pool, boules pitch with a backdrop of vineyards, sunflowers on the edge of the ancient forest of the Gresigne.

We fell in love with the area after several visits, bought a house and went to live in the Tarn with our young children for a year while restoring the house and landscaping and planting the gardens.

It is a heavenly place where you can happily forget about anything else in the world for as long as you care to stay.

We have been back a week and ever since our return I have been meaning to send you this, to say how very much we loved staying at your house. We found it absolutely delightful and just exactly what we wanted. It had so much atmosphere and was quite gorgeous. You have been very clever with the renovation and kept the farm house feel. We loved the simplicity of the decor and the bare floors. Also the pool was great with there being no need for that horrid stuff, chlorine! We also adored the area. It is all so pretty– real rural France at its best, with some wonderful villages round about to visit, and also Albi with the cathedral and the Toulouse Lautrec museum. We also loved Cordes and many thanks for telling us about the kayaking at St Antonin. That was another great day out.

Notes:
Outside: Lots of pretty outdoor areas and garden. Owner is a garden-designer. So many roses on the walls, lavender and olive and cypress trees. There is large rustic table on the lower terrace with benches that will seat 14 or so, the upper terrace can seat 8-10. The pool is an elegant 11m x 5m with a large decked area and a large covered area for shade. There are 3 water-spouts that pour into the pool form the wall above. Sun loungers are cotton-covered waterproof 'matelats' with head-rests and there are two wicker armchairs and small table at the pool as well. Pool is professionally maintained and checked weekly. Utility Room: Downstairs there is a devoted utility room with washer and dryer, sink etc, there is a drying line round the corner or a foldable hanger/dryer Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen included. Beds are made up on arrival, white towel sin the rooms for bathrooms and large fluffy brown towels for the pool. If staying two weeks this will include a change of linen and clean after one week.

We had the most gloriously peaceful week in this off the beaten track charming old farmhouse. It has been so carefully and cleverly restored to keep all the wonderful originality of the building, but has all the mod cons you need when on holiday like good dishwashers, tumble driers comfortable beds etc. The house is built of local old stone so keeps lovely and cool inside always, the rooms are light and airy and there is a huge terrace that runs along the length of the house, so plenty of room for lunches and dinners for lots of people! This then leads down to a lovely swimming pool and garden and the whole property is surrounded by beautiful vineyards for as far as you can see! We went on quite a few walks straight from the house and there is a great variety of terrains so there is something for everyone! Nearby there is also the medieval town of Castenlau which feels practically unchanged since the 15th century! There is a lovely market there too and quite a few delicious restaurants to eat at if you feel like going out in the evening! It is one of the most tranquil places I have been to and a place to simply unwind and enjoy and bathe in its peace and natural beauty! We also went on a fantastic kayaking trip not far away which is a wonderful 'day out' but again all this information in at the house when you arrive. There is simply something for everyone!

Location

Coast/Beach:

2-3 hours to the Atlantic or Mediterranean beaches

Travel:

Toulouse airport is a 55 minute drive, Rodez (cheap flights form Stansted) is 1 1/2 hours drive. Carcassonne 2 1/4 hours

Distances:

Castelnau de Montmiral, a very pretty bastide village perched on the hill with amazing views is 5 minutes away, with a small supermarket and bakery, bar and restaurants. Gaillac is 15 minutes for the big supermarkets, big market and other shopping. Albi is 25 minutes with interesting history, amazing cathedral and lots of city shopping.

The famous medieval town of Cordes-sur-ciel is 15 minutes drive and packed with shops, gardens, and places of interest. St. Antonin du Noble Val is 25 minutes.

Restaurants

Castelnau: choice of steak/frites at Les Arcades or more upmarket La Table des Consuls

Cahuzac: La Falaise is supposed to be excellent but more expensive. For a cheap and cheerful Plat du Jour, La Bonne Auberge is hard to beat (11 euros a head with wine). Not haute cuisine but authentic.

Gaillac: if you are in town a coffee or lunch at Bar du Sport in the square is no-nonsense and hard to beat. For more elegant cuisine across the road is Vigne en Foule.

Chateau de Salettes: Just outside Cahuzac. Very slick Barcelona style restaurant in beautiful surroundings but expensive. Be sure to drive on for 2 minutes past Chateau de Salettes just to see Chateau du Mauriac even if you don’t want the full tour (open to public after 3pm) worth seeing the facade.

Albi: Le Clos Ste Cecile has a lovely outdoor terrace (not on the street) and is situated just below the Cathedral. Very good food with prices to match.

Bruniquel , another beautiful hilltop village, has a good restaurant L’Etape du Chateau with a 18 Euro 3-course menu and kids menu (does not accept credit cards)

Canoeing

There is a great canoe trip from St Antonin du Noble Val, about 35 minutes drive. There are lots of companies to choose from to rent canoes. We have used both Canard a L’eau and Les Pieds dans L’eau (on the river bank just before the bridge that crosses in to town on the left and right respectively).

No skill or previous experience required and trip takes about 3-4 hours. Kids need to be 6 years +. Take a picnic and dry clothes, which all goes into watertight barrels. You can easily stop along the way. At the end the company picks you all up and takes you all back to base. Best on hot days!
