Lonsdale cottage is situated in an elevated position in the seaside village of Rockcliffe. Close to the beach and surrounded by pretty gardens it provides comfortable spacious accommodation for six people. Large bike store.

About David Walley

Living on a farm in Cheshire we fell in love with Rockcliffe whilst on holiday in the area. We especially enjoy the wonderful walks, which we are still discovering, and the birds, red squirrels and deer.

Why David Walley chose Dumfries & Galloway

Rockcliffe is a beautiful coastal village at any time of the year. It is so quiet and unspoilt, but, only an hour from the M6 so easily accessible. Lonsdale has the most amazing views from all main rooms and set in lovely gardens it was love at first sight. We enjoy walking and the property connects to NTS land and forest paths and the coastal path from the beach is wonderful. The 7 Stanes mountain biking is so close by and of course lots of birds and butterflies to spot and enjoy.

What makes this cottage unique

Lonsdale is just as wonderful in the winter as the summer with double glazing, full central heating and a cosy wood burning stove. Sit back in the swivel chairs in the warmth and watch the weather come in from the sea.If you are sitting ,washing up, in bed or cleaning your teeth there is always an amazing view from the window. Relax with books,games and jigsaws and enjoy the peace and beautiful surroundings.

Location

Coast/Beach:

Rockcliffe beach is approx 250 metres and is a sheltered bay suitable for families with sand and rock pools and safe bathing. Walk across the sands to Rough Island at low tide. Access to coastal path and walks to sheltered bays.

Travel:

Car recommended. Airports at Glasgow 100 miles and Prestwick 65 miles where car hire is available. Nearest Railway Station Dumfries 20 miles. Good bus service. Irish Ferry to Stranraer 65 miles.

Distances:

Colvend with good shop/ post office 2 miles. Dalbeattie for small supermarkets, butchers, petrol, banks etc 7 miles.Castle Douglas specialist food town 12 miles. Dumfries main shopping and entertainment centre 20 miles.

Further Details:

Mountain biking at 7 Stanes through the forest. Walk to the eating pubs at Kippford along the Jubilee path 1 mile. Walks in all directions along the coastal path, through the forests or up the Mote of Mark for lovely views. All direct from the Lonsdale .

RSPB centre at Mereshead, Threave Gardens and Castle, Sweetheart Abbey,Lock Ken Red Kite Trail, Kircudbright (the artists town), Mabie Farm Park, Horse Riding and much more all nearby.

There is a rear lawned area surrounded by azaleas, camellias, rhodedendrums and magnolias and a sunken Japenease garden complete with a sheltered gezebo seat. Paved dining area (table and 6 chairs) overlooking the sea. Large lockable bike store. Sloping woodland garden. Utility Room: Sink, washing machine and new tumbler drier. Coat hooks and shoe rack. Iron, ironing board and clothes maid. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Property cleaned for arrival and beds made up with all bed linen included. Large bath and hand towel per person included. Linen changed weekly. Other: Free WiFi. Sunny porch with plants. Hall/landing with desk, bookcases, books, games and jigsaws

Stunning

A wonderful position, spacious with beautiful views from literally every window, including the bathroom.

The large kitchen/ dining room was perfect for everyone to cook, chat and eat together . Likewise the very comfortably furnished, light, spacious lounge was a great place to relax or just sit on your own admiring the views or watch the red squirrels scamper around.

The beds were extremely comfortable. We slept in the ensuite room downstairs and let the family sleep upstairs with their own bathroom.

The area is considered to be Scotland's best kept secrets! The position in Rockcliffe is perfect for evening strolls in both directions along the coast- Castlepoint to your left or Kippford to your right. Although the one mile walk to the pub in Kippford was a favourite.

The fittest family members were very impressed with the seven stanes mountain bike trails. The walk along the cliff path to Sandyhills is spectacular and the national trust threave garden and castle are well worth a visit. The youngest and oldest simply enjoyed exploring the rock pools on Rockcliffe beach.

Of the many places we have stayed in within the area, Lonsdale cottage is definitely the best. We will hopefully return next year.

brilliant stay

We stayed with our daughter, son in law and two small granddaughters. This is the best self catering I have stayed in and we have traveled extensively, it is roomy and so comfortable and has everything you could need. The layout was perfect as we had the ground floor ensuite room and the family were upstairs with the very large family bathroom. The large kitchen diner also has comfy seating if you needed some quiet time and overlooked the lovely patio. Lonsdale is a credit to the owners who have created the perfect retreat.

Lonsdale Cottage

The cottage exceeded our expectations, with outstanding views from every window, well-equipped kitchen and lovely, large rooms. We would certainly like to return in the future.

There was also lots of information in the cottage about things to do in the area, and plenty of choice of activities. Rockcliffe itself is a pretty village and offers the choice of a relaxing or active holiday, with lots of lovely walks without having to go far afield.
