Notes:
Notes on accommodation: We have a large wildlife pond so please keep a close eye on young children, I would never forgive myself if there was an incident. Very well behaved pets are welcome. Parking for 2 cars but more space available for special occasions. Barbecue available if not in use. Outside: Table and chairs to side of cottage, sitting area under grapevine. We have a beautiful award winning garden with amazing views and a large wildlife pond which you are very welcome to wander or sit in (the garden not the pond!). The garden has featured on Channel 4's Landscape Man, Gardeners World and Alan Titchmarsh series "Britains Best Back Gardens". It has also appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers ranging from the Financial Times to a Shanghai garden magazine, we even made it onto the front cover of The English Garden magazine. As you can tell we were a little astounded at all the interest! If you are into Wildlife this is the garden for you. Please see the garden website www.follersmanor.co.uk Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen provided. Change of linen/towels and cleaned once a week.

Amazing rural retreat

We had a fantastic weekend at Follers cottage, beautiful countryside and gardens, lovely village with many cafes pubs and restaurants. The owners couldn't have been more welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our whole stay was fabulous.

Not as depicted on website

  • 2 of 5

The cottage is in the back yard of Follers Manor house within a few yards of the house and the owners back door

There are no or very limited views of the South Downs from the cottage

The photograph of the front of the cottage shows a table and chairs and it is be assumed that these table and chairs are for the sole use of the cottage, not so, these chairs and table and several others scattered throughout the gardens are for the use of coach loads of people visiting the gardens

The owners have large dog which is loose in the grounds from dawn to dusk

If the cottage door is open the dog walks in uninvited, it approaches you on every occasion you are outside sometimes jumping up at you with its front paws on your body

The owners employ two gardeners?/handy persons who also have two dogs one of which can not be trusted and if anyone is in the Manor house grounds this dog has to be shut away

When the gardeners/handy persons are in the grounds they let their two dogs out to wander everywhere in the Manor house grounds

When we wished to go out we had been told to shout for someone and the dogs would be shut away

One morning we wished to leave the cottage but all three dogs were outside of the cottage front door, I opened a window to shout for assistance and one of the dogs jumped up at the window eventually someone did come and took the dogs away without any exaggeration this experience was upsetting to us

On one occasion the male gardener approached my wife and his dogs had been locked in his van all day and it was her fault, my wife did not tell me about this until we had traveled home or I would have had something to say to this gardener and the owner of Follers Manor

The fault is not with my wife, we are not to blame for a dog that evidently cannot be trusted

When we booked this holiday we was not made aware of the serious problems we would have with a gardeners dog

One morning on opening the cottage front door one of the dogs had left us a pile of exrement

The last night we stayed in the cottage the hot water system failed the lady owner came over to the cottage but she was not able to help in anyway to quote"I have had too many glasses of wine" she did smell strongly of alcohol

the owner said she had two electrician qualified sons she phoned them both one did not answer the other could not help

The lady owner said there was nothing she could do

There is much more but not enough words remaining

Owner's Response: On reading this review I was upset. I have to admit I did not sleep well at all that night. To get things into perspective the following day, I read through all of the 41 reviews on the website and all the comments in the cottage guest book, which guests had kindly taken the time and effort to write. Everyone made such lovely comments. So why this one terrible one? Then I asked myself why Mr. Evans in the whole two weeks you where here did you never say one word to our Gardeners or ourselves even though we had tried to engage you in conversation to be polite. Indeed Mrs. Evans you never made any complaints. Until your final evening, complaining the water was cold in fact during your long shower all the hot water had been used and on testing the water found that the immersion was already reheating. Then Mr. Evans you spoke and informed me the cottage was a disgrace and sub standard, I quietly listened to your endless complaints and your request for a discount and left. On Friday we said goodbye to a lovely couple from Birmingham who came down for Gyndebourne, who would like to come again next year. I am sorry to say that I have come to the conclusion that your comments are down to your outlook on life rather than your stay with us!

A completely excellent experience

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely, well kept cottage in the most stunning location. Anne and Geoff have produced a little corner of heaven and are generous in sharing it with others. Everything was perfect and as hosts they were warm, welcoming and keen to meet our individual requirements. Cannot recommend highly enough

Comfortable cottage, beautiful gardens and views across South Downs.

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable cottage and ideal for a family of 4. Modern and well equipped cottage. The gardens are stunning and you can walk or cycle directly from the cottage into the South Downs, Friston Forest or down to the Coast. Short walking distance along the river to Alfriston or Litlington (great pub the Plough and Harrow). Anne and Geoff were very welcoming and the gardeners Steve and Julia gave us much history on the gardens. Highly recommend.

Lovely cottage and beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cottage in beautiful grounds. Walking round the garden and looking at the views is an added bonus. The cottage is well placed for either walking or driving to explore the area. We were able to start our walks from the back gate and immediately find ourselves strolling through the Sussex countryside. There are great pubs in Alfriston and Littlington are only a brisk walk away. We will definitely be looking to visit Follers Manor again.

Location

Special interest holidays:

My husband is a keen amateur Astronomer. We suffer from very little light pollution for the south east. So if the night is clear and you're interested there is quite a view to the stars. If you would like to study the sun he also has a Solar Scope which allows you to safely look at the sun. The area attracts cyclists, windsurfers and para-gliders. There is kayaking on the river at 7 Sisters Country Park. Of course instead you could just walk to your hearts content stopping at village pubs for lunch. If history is your thing, Alfriston's Clergy House was the first property bought by the National Trust. There are a great many other Historic attractions in the area. For younger guests and young at heart adults there is one of the best small zoos in the UK. Please check out Drusillas Zoo website, it really is worth a visit only 2 miles from the cottage. We are situated between Eastbourne, Brighton and Lewes which you can get to by driving or train. The surrounding countryside is amazing.

Coast/Beach:

Approximately 2-3 miles along river to coast (Seven Sisters Country Park). 3 miles by car.

Travel:

Gatwick is the nearest airport about 45 minutes away. 20 minutes from Newhaven Port. Trains to London go from Seaford and Berwick.

Further Details:

Alfriston has a number of independent shops and restaurants. While Seaford approx. 2 miles has all you would expect from a small town. We are more or less in the middle of a triangle between Eastbourne, Lewes and Brighton so you can take your pick for shopping.
