About the property

Farmhouse in Cortona, Arezzo Province, Tuscany, Italy - Peaceful Property Within Easy Day Trips To Many Historic Italian Cities

Our home is located 6 miles outside of Cortona, on the Tuscan/Umbrian border, near Lake Trasimeno. The house dates back to the 1700s and was originally a farmhouse. It is set a third of the way up the hill, below a forest and we have over a hundred acres in which you can roam. The house has 4 bedrooms: 2 double bedrooms and 2 with 2 single beds, 3 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, a dining room and a portico (outside, covered eating space). There is a large 12m pool with pool house, with wonderful views overlooking the hill town of Cortona.

There is also a separate property within the grounds, but with its own garden area and drive, which sleeps 2 very comfortably and would suit a couple on their own or with an extra guest or older child as there is an extra bedroom which is not en-suite. It also has its own kitchen, study, and spacious living room. Please note that this property is not included in the basic rental price of the main house and would be considered for rental at an extra cost.

The pool is in a secluded position above the property and not within view of the house which allows again for an extra sense of privacy.

About Laura Bayntun-Coward

Swiss citizen, who has grown up in Europe and now resides with her family in UK. Lived in and loved this property since 1970 and would like it to be used and enjoyed by other families.

Why Laura Bayntun-Coward chose Cortona

Bought in 1970 by my parents, it is a 400 year old farm house close to Cortona and other beautiful Tuscan/Umbrian cities to make it worth visiting all year round. One can either get away from it all and enjoy peace and tranquility of the hills, or use it as a base to visit many famous Italian cities, including Florence, Rome, Siena, Assisi, Perugia. It is within easy access of local roads, 15 minutes from train station on the main Rome to Florence line, and 20 minutes from main Rome to Florence motorway.

What makes this farmhouse unique

It is 6km from Cortona, a famous Etruscan hill town, with many artistic and historical attractions. The closest shops are within a mile, as well as some very good restaurants. The property is set within over 80 acres of hills and woodland and is the last property on the road so there is no passing traffic.

There is a secluded 12m pool with beautiful views over Cortona. The living space is large and comfortable. Very much a home that has been loved and looked after over the last 44 years.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Laura, how's this to use as a review? Feel free to cut it if it is too long.

We have just returned from a fantastic week at Le Volpaie. Set high in the hills at the end of a track overlooking a stunning valley, this truly is a peaceful paradise. It was lovely to stay in a family home that has clearly been cherished for generations. There is a vast, terraced garden surrounded by olive trees and native forest. The lavender hedge beside the portico was full of butterflies, and we loved seeing the Hoopoes flying very close to the house.

There were 6 of us - 4 adults and 2 children, and we were very comfortable in the beautifully decorated bedrooms upstairs. We didn't need to use the additional twin room. The kitchen had everything we could possibly want, with gorgeous local crockery and all mod cons. The children made good use of the apple tv in the heat of the day, and we all spent many happy hours in the large pool. The local shop (just 1 mile away) sold everything we needed - delicious fresh bread, meat, wine and cheeses, as well as cured meat and great fresh fruit & vegetables.

Local trips included Cortona, a must for breathtaking views, great restaurants and fascinating history & architecture. Other highlights were lunch beside Lake Trasimeno, a visit to Gubbio's palace & cathedral and an incredible lunch at the Villa Piazzano, just 5 mins drive away. At just over 2 hours drive from Pisa airport, Le Volpaie gave us a memorable holiday among the olive trees that we will never forget!

Notes on accommodation: Aldo and Giuseppina Zucchini have been looking after the house and grounds for over 10 years and are your first port of call if you need help... unfortunately they do not speak English, but are friendly, and can usually figure things out with a smile and gesturing. Giuseppina will come and clean upon request and Aldo takes care of any other maintenance that needs doing, including the pool and garden. If you have more complex problems and need an English speaker, then our lovely neighbours Pino and Caroline Nobile can give you advice or you can contact me any time. Outside: Large garden, stream below, hammock and outdoor dining facilities. 12mx6 m pool, pool house and sun loungers. If my parents are next door, they will agree to use the pool either very early or late so as to give you privacy. Utility Room: Washing machine, ironing board, iron, hoover, extra fridge freezer Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, linens, pool towels included and pick up service from train station if arriving by train. Cleaning available on request. Usually cleaner comes once a week or once every 2 weeks, depending on need. Other: Outdoor portico with dining table

What a beautiful opportunity to connect with the Tuscan countryside!

  • 5 of 5

This wonderfully appointed house is a short drive to several hilltop towns with history reaching back to the Eutruscans. The local good and wine are outstanding and the views of the lake and valley make this a perfect spot to bring people together.

Un petit paradis....

  • 5 of 5

Car: necessary

15 minutes from Lake Trasimeno, Italy's 4th largest lake. sandy beaches, with boating and pedalo facilities and restaurants and bars.

We fly into Pisa airport which is small and manageable, but Rome is often more accessible for other cities. Train services are regular and an efficient way to travel (and cheap) to Cortona, and the journey takes approximately 3 hours from either airport to the Cortona/Camucia station. Car Hire is definitely recommended.

Pergo, our nearest village is 2km away.

Cortona is 6km away.

We are 1 1/2 hours from Florence and just under 2 hours from Rome.

Siena is 50 minute drive

Further Details:

We do most of our food shopping locally in the Despar, which is on the main road about a mile away. It has a superb deli, butcher's counter, freshly baked goods and is open every day except Sunday. Opposite, you will find a decent coffee bar which sells English newspapers and great ice cream. There is also a decent fast-food pizza place if you have really hungry children who can not wait for the restaurants to open at 7pm. There are many good restaurants in the area- venues range from pizzeria, to Trattorias, to fancy cuisine at the Villa Piazzano just down the road.

Market days are Saturday in Cortona and Thursdays in Camucia. Camucia has the bigger market, but both will offer pork roasts called Porchetta, along with other local food delicacies and, if you like rummaging around, you can sometimes find some very cheap designer pieces in the clothes stalls. Camucia has a wonderful coffee bar called Vanellis, down the main road to the train station, where you can buy great pastries for breakfast.

Cortona has a new museum on early Etruscan findings in the area and is well worth a visit, and Fra Angelico's famous frescoes are found exhibited in the Dioclesian museum. The Church of Santa Margheritta exhibits the mummified body of St Margheritta in a glass coffin upon the altar which is rather fascinating if a little macabre. A special place for us has always been “Le Celle”, a working monastery situated just 3 miles above the walls of Cortona. St. Francis' cell is here - he helped to build it in the early 1200s and spent much time visiting and praying in the place.

Lago Trasimeno, the 4th largest lake in Italy is just over the hill from “Le Volpaie” and 20 minutes drive. It is famous for its battle fought there in 217 BC between the legions of Flaminius and Hannibal's troops. It is also a fun place to take the kids for a day of swimming and boating.

The Mix Festival is a special cultural week which takes place in Cortona the first week in August.
