About the property

2-6 person Modern Villa in Gavalohori, West. Crete - Quiet Location Overlooks Traditional Village With Views of Mountains & Olive Groves To Sea

An exquisitely designed single-storey, beautifully appointed villa is set on a hillside with views of both sea and mountains. Built to exacting standards to owners' own requirements and specification, for year-round comfort and enjoyment.

Greek tourism licence (EOT) number MHTE 1042K10003252401 updated 2017.

This unique architect designed, modern property has all the comforts of home and more, enjoying a very special wrap around pool that runs along all along one side of the house. Comprising two large bedrooms and 3 bath/shower rooms, the accommodation, all on one floor, offers a variety of sleeping arrangements and lends itself to occupancy by families, couples, friends travelling together etc. as well as offering equipment for babies, younger children, teens and people with restricted mobility.

Wander nearby and you are surrounded by groves of olive, almond & orange trees, with the tinkling of goat bells & the calling of birds of prey circling in the vivid blue skies above you. From February to June the fields around Villa Mia abound with native wild flowers. In winter it is the perfect comfortable haven - sunshine in the day and log fires at night ! In high summer the solar heated pool is delicious day or evening. In autumn the temperatures remain high and the gardens continue to burst with exotic colours.

Within 5 minutes walk from the villa enjoy the shaded secluded Venetian wells in a glade of ancient plane trees above the village.

Within ten minutes drive (and visible from the kitchen window) the ruined Roman city of Aptera continues to astound with new finds every archaeological season. Within an hour's drive you will find deserted beaches, rocky coves, Byzantine churches and monasteries, Turkish castles (including one in clear view from the pool terrace), Minoan ruins, caves & gorges to explore, Venetian harbours & bridges, a fantastic water park and two of the most picturesque towns in all Crete (Chania & Rethymnon).

A little further away is the world-famous Minoan site of Knossos, & several more Roman cities, as well as one of the most idyllic shallow, sandy beaches in the world at Elafonissi. Other activities include: eating out, wild flower walks, snorkelling, safe sandy beaches, sunset watching! But the villa is so well appointed most guests find it difficult to leave...

For peak season we are looking for Saturday-Saturday lets to accommodate flights from the vast majority of UK airports, however out of peak season we will try to accommodate other changeover days.

About Wendy Davies

Villa owner Wendy, her husband Eddie and their 2 sons come from Cheshire and have been holidaying in the Apokoronas region of Crete since the boys were little, enjoying the family friendly welcome in the local tavernas and the sandy beaches of Almyrida bay where the boys learnt to swim.

Wendy Davies purchased this villa in 2006

Why Wendy Davies chose Chania area

After years formulating ideas of their ideal 'home from home' the couple distilled all the best facets of villas they had stayed in, added their own unique twist of a wrap around pool, and designed and built Villa Mia towards the end of 2006. They bought a plot of land overlooking the quiet traditional village of Gavalohori, the olive groves and the sea yet within easy strolling distance of the village bakery, shops and eateries. Equipped as their year round retreat, the Villa enjoys panoramic views, jaw dropping sunsets and offers solace from busy professional lives in the UK – a guaranteed stress-buster stay at any time of the year.

What makes this villa unique

The villa is quiet and above the village, so with superb views, but with all the village facilities just a gentle stroll away.

The mosaic tiled pool is heated all year round by energy-efficient solar heating, at no cost to the guests and is entered by a set of gentle non-slip steps from the terrace. There is a pool "robot" ionising system to clean the water with minimal use of chemicals so no chlorine smell when in the water.

With uninterrupted views across the olive groves to the village of Gavalohori, and beyond to the sea and mountains, this is an ideal place for a private, quiet, get away from it all holiday.

Great Villa, fantastic views, short trip to beach!

  • 5 of 5

The owners were very helpful, kept us informed and answered all our questions before the holiday as we had not been to Crete before. The villa was exactly as described, lovely! It had all the mod cons, was clean and well maintained. Beautiful location with views of the mountains and sea, in a very unspoilt picturesque village. It was ideal for us as it was not far from the seaside but we had the advantage of staying in a very peaceful and relaxing place. We've had a number of interruptions to our stay at previous villas due to gardening, pool cleaning and housekeeping. Villa Mia accommodated our request for minimal housekeeping and disturbance so we could fully relax. The wi-fi was a bit ropey but Yvonne (housekeeper) sorted it. The owners recommended Auto Club who were very good and met us at the airport. A small car is best for the narrow roads. Directions were detailed so we arrived easily in the dark due to late flight. The pool was a good size, with outdoor furniture and BBQ,warm enough to swim for us Brits(!) and sun was very warm especially in the second week! There are nearby villas but it still feels private. The village has a couple of eateries and Monica's by the square is a great place to eat as is Kritiko restaurant with seaside views in Kalyves. There is lots to do at the beach or for the more adventurous snorkelling and diving. There is also a lot of historical sites to visit such as Aptera and Knossos (the latter by car or you can go by boat trip). The beaches were practically deserted as we were just out of season but it was warm enough to spend time there at Almerida (good for kids) or further up past Kalyves. Chania is the large city nearby with a beautiful venetian harbour for a day out.The village in which we stayed has a small but very nice folk museum and old olive oil factory from the 16th century that has been preserved as well as very old houses and a site that used to house an ancient turkish coffee house, you can see the arabic tablets on the wall! A local lady sells handmade lace from a house in the square (ask at the museum for opening times). Unfortunately it was shut whilst we were there for Easter. On Easter Saturday there is a service at the big church (past the museum) where they burn an effigy of Judas. Really amazing to see! We stayed for 2 weeks and it wasn't long enough to enjoy all that western Crete had to offer! We will definitely go back again to Villa Mia and will recommend to our family, friends and colleagues.

Owner's Response: Glad to hear that you enjoyed the villa and got out and about to appreciate what Crete has to offer. There really is an amazing amount to do and see without going too far afield. Will talk to the housekeeper to see what she had to do to improve the wifi!

A winter stay

  • 5 of 5

Villa Mia is a very comfortable home to stay in and it was good for us that it was as Crete experienced one of its coldest and wettest winters in decades. Consequently we spent a lot more time indoors than we otherwise would have. The house is heated by oil so were able to keep it warm but in Greece this is expensive because of the cost of fuel. We were never able to use the pool even though is was heated by solar. It did however look very attractive, as did all plantings around the house. I was always able to have a bouquet of flowers on the table.

The kitchen is very well equipped and we did use it quite often as in February the Gavalochori taverns had not yet opened. By March they were opening on the weekends. Monika's and Arismari both serve excellent meals. Fortunately 3 tavernas in Vamos stay open through the winter months and we especially liked Parasia which has live music Saturday nights.

We did quite a bit of travelling through out Crete and found that outside the big cities very little is open during the winter months. The area around Gavalochori fortunately does have tavernas, shops etc that do stay open because of the large mostly British expat community living in the Apkoronas area.

Wendy and Eddie were easy to work with and the local British staff that they employ were equally nice.

We enjoyed ourselves despite the weather.

Fantastic villa with stunning pool

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully presented villa with a gorgeous pool, suitable for young children and older. Peaceful location with breathtaking and uninterrupted views of the village below and the mountains, but within walking distance of small local shops and tavernas serving delicious food, especially Monica's. We enjoyed our relaxing stay, spending most of our time round the pool and found the villa so well equipped, with all mod cons and plenty of books, games and DVD's if you needed. The owners were extremely helpful in all areas, from booking the villa to answering questions and providing extensive information about the property and area. I would not hesitate to recommend this villa to all my friends and to anyone visiting this area of Crete.

Amazing villa in an amazing place

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect Holiday at Villa Mia and can't recommend it thoroughly enough. The owners are so nice and helpful, the villa itself its clean, bright and airy and spacious. The pool is wonderful and our littlest loved the steps as he could stay in that end without being scared of going into the deepest part of the pool. The village that the villa is within is a really lovely village with great Tavernas, bar, shops and bakery but still feels very rural. This will be a hard one to beat.

Villa Mia - home from home

  • 5 of 5

The villa is exactly as advertised. Spacious, well equipped internally and plenty of pool side furniture. It is clean and towels changed on a regular basis and everything is in good working order. The villa is private but on a hill side which gives superb views over the local village down to the sea and of the White Mountain range. The pool has varied depths to suite all ages.

The walk down to the local village is short. The village has plenty of character and has excellent tavernas for eating out. The local shops are quite adequate for shopping for your groceries. The nearby sea side resort just a short drive away has many more excellent tavernas by the sea and souvenir shops. We ate out at Dimitris's which is right on the beach. We used Elia and Thyme for take aways on three occasions. You can have anything on the menu.

The villa is handily placed for further exploration inland through the mountains and visits to the towns of Chania and Rethimno.

The owners Wendy and Eddie are friendly and helpful, providing you with all the information needed for a smooth holiday. Yvonne kept the villa clean and provided clean towels on a regular basis.

Everything you could want from a holiday villa!

  • 5 of 5

The villa is in a great location on the outskirts of a quiet village, which has a couple of super tavernas, a small supermarket, bakery and museum. Just a 10min walk down the hill to the bakery every morning and the taverna in the evening (with live music some nights). Also a short drive to a pretty seaside town with more great tavernas, an excellent scuba and snorkelling school, shops etc. This is not a big resort just nice and low key and relatively unspoilt.

The location isn't isolated, you do have a couple of villas above you and a new one being built next door (did not affect us at all) but they aren't close and don't overlook the villa at all. It's very private but looks out over the village and you can hear all the rural sounds. This is a local traditional village with a little bit of exclusive development, not surprisingly as it is perfect for holiday villas. The local people are all friendly and you can wonder around the small quiet backstreets.

The owners have thought about pretty much everything with this villa. I couldn't find anything we needed in the kitchen, bathroom, lounge etc. there were so many great DVDs, games and books that we could have stayed in for a full week, if it had rained....of course it didn't! The pool was perfect for our two boys (aged12 and 16) and it was really hard to get them out of the villa. There is so much to do in the local area, that it is shame not to go out exploring.

From start to finish the owners have been so helpful, answering all of my questions really promptly by email. They use the villa themselves every year so they know all about the area and this is really helpful. We hadn't been to Greece before so their knowledge was priceless. The local English staff were very good, the house manager to sort out any problems quickly and Yvonne the cleaner who was lovely, cleaning and changing towels midweek and even folding our toilet paper into origami, nearly too pretty to use!! Bathrooms and showers all great, plenty of room for everyone to spread out. We are a family of four and it is perfect for 4. It can accommodate 4 adults and 3 kids, but I think it would only work well for that many if it was a couple plus another couple sharing with their small children. there are only two bedrooms, although they are big, one room can accommodate 5.

I am missing the view so much since we got back and our meals at the taverna. I would not hesitate to return because I know the villa ticked all the boxes for us.

In the bedrooms there are ample mirrors (well lit makeup area, hairdryer, full length mirrors) and plenty of storage space, including full length hanging space and ample drawers in both bedrooms.
