About the property

Well located character house - garden & parking. Perfect for special occasions

Durham House is a fantastic Georgian residence, with 6 bedrooms (2 double, 2 kingsize and 2 twin), 2 sitting rooms (one with open fire), a kitchen and separate dining room, 2 bathrooms and a wealth of features, including the main stairway and separate servants' stairs! Most of the rooms have views over Wirksworth and the surrounding countryside. The house has been tastefully furnished with a mixture of antique and modern furniture. The house is fully equipped, including a dishwasher and microwave in the kitchen, internet, IPOD and MP3 docking facilities and a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility room. It has a well established, secluded garden, with outdoor seating, a BBQ and a pond. Durham House is situated on a quiet but central street, only a couple of minutes walk from the town centre. There are plenty of walks from the doorstep and the High Peak Trail and the Peak District National Park is only a 10 minute walk away.

About Tamsin Ellis

When I bought the house I was a single 30 something, working in London and Paris. Now, I am a 40 something mother of two and only an hour's drive from Wirksworth, so I am slowly getting closer to the Peak District and the outdoors life.....perhaps one day I shall be able to enjoy the views from Wirksworth on a daily basis.

When I bought the house, I wanted a bolt hole, in the countryside but with at least one shop within walking distance. Wirksworth has all the amenities of a small town with the most fantastic views which I always enjoy with a cup of coffee or glass of wine (depending on the time of day!)

Why Tamsin Ellis chose Wirksworth

I fell in love with the house and Wirksworth as soon as I saw them. The house is light and airy with original features and the garden is nicely sheltered, so it always feels a couple of degrees warmer sitting in the garden.

I keep discovering more things to see and do in the area and now that I have children I can appreciate attractions that were previously not important to me (although I do miss the opportunity to sample the local restaurants and pubs as often as I otherwise would!)

What makes this house unique

The house has amazing views over the rolling countryside. Inside, the house has retained its original features, including fireplaces and servants staircase!

Notes on accommodation: Children welcome. Non smoking only. Pets considered. All of the bedrooms are a good size and well furnished, with lovely views. The top floor twin room can be converted to a double bedroom, if requested. There are also 2 travel cots available. Both bathrooms are large and airy. The showers have good pressure and there are stunning views from both bathrooms. The top floor bathroom has a roll top bath and is a great place to relax with a glass of wine. We have tried to decorate the property in an environmentally friendly fashion, using non toxic paints and some organic sheets and towels. Outside: Outside there is a lawned front garden on two levels, secluded from the street. There is a back patio garden with a large table and BBQ area. There is off-street parking for 3 cars and a secure area in the garage for bikes. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels provided.

Such a special weekend with friends. Restful, beautiful ambience, and the perfect house for gathering with friends and having a really special time.

A very well equipped house with plenty of glasses, nice china and cooking utensils.

Bed linen of beautiful quality. Heating system really efficient. Garden is gorgeous. Kitchen is adequate but could do with a slightly bigger oven / top for the number of people but great overall.

Really can’t wait to come back. A special thank you to the owner for all her attention and care.

Great house for all the family

A lovely house, well equipped for an extended family group. It was warm and comfortable even on a chilly half-term week in autumn. The intriguing layout with the back stairs made it fun to be in. The house has everything you need, comfortable beds, lots of big towels etc and a super bathroom and shower on the top floor (as well as a bathroom on the middle floor).

Wirksworth is a charming town with a good playground, shops, tea rooms and restaurants as well a characterful small cinema just a few minutes' walk away.

There is lots to do nearby, so there's no need for long car journeys once you are there.

The owner is very helpful and provides useful information about the area.

I would definitely recommend Durham House.

Characterful property that's splendid for a family retreat

- clean rooms with plenty of space and lovely views

- very well stocked with towels, crockery, cutlery and space for your food

- well located for the local town. The red lion is excellent for a first night tipple, and the chip shop in town is excellent, but get in early!

A wonderful vacation home in a great town

The house and garden is very charming and is situated very close to nice parks, shops, parks and walks. We hosted a family reunion in the house and it was a perfect setting. The owner was very helpful and provided everything we needed when we needed it.

Great property for a group catch up

5 couples with young kids stayed at the house for a bit of reunion in November. The house was perfect for this, really nicely finished and lots of little extra touches to make the stay memorable. The kitchen was probably the best kitted out we've experienced from a rental property.

Well located within Wirksworth down a quiet street but a very short stroll to the high street.

Wirksworth is a charming town on the edge of the Peak District. There are plenty of walks from the doorstep, on footpaths or on small roads and lanes. The High Peak Trail is only a 10 minute walk away, with miles of car free cycling and walking.

The house is located on a quiet street close to the centre of Wirskworth, described as 'the gem in the Peaks'. Almost completely surrounded by hills and within easy reach of magnificent scenery, it has many features of interest, including the heritage centre and an enthusiasts railway line, which takes visitors on the journey down the lovely Ecclesbourne Valley.

St Mary's church nestles in a cathedral like precinct at the centre of the town. Festivals include Well Dressing (started in 1827) and an Arts and Architecture festival in September.

Wirksworth is a thriving market town, with great facilities, including 2 butchers, bakeries, a chemist, toyshop, 2 banks (with ATMs) and some marvellous pubs, restaurants, delis and tea rooms. There is also an independent cinema.

There are a number of beautiful walks from Wirksworth and around the town itself. Wirksworth is situated 5 miles from Matlock and Carsington Water and less than 2 miles from the High Peak Trail and the Peak District National Park.
