Overview

Property

Updated: 10-Dec-2016
House in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, England - Well Located, With Garden And Parking

Durham House is a fantastic Georgian residence, with 6 bedrooms (2 double, 2 kingsize and 2 twin), 2 sitting rooms (one with open fire), a kitchen and separate dining room, 2 bathrooms and a wealth of features, including the main stairway and separate servants' stairs! Most of the rooms have views over Wirksworth and the surrounding countryside. The house has been tastefully furnished with a mixture of antique and modern furniture. The house is fully equipped, including a dishwasher and microwave in the kitchen, IPOD and MP3 docking facilities and a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility room. It has a well established, secluded garden, with outdoor seating, a BBQ and a pond. Durham House is situated on a quiet but central street, only a couple of minutes walk from the town centre. About the Owner

When I bought the house I was a single 30 something, working in London and Paris. Now, I am a 40 something mother of two and only an hour's drive from Wirksworth, so I am slowly getting closer to the Peak District and the outdoors life.....perhaps one day I shall be able to enjoy the views from Wirksworth on a daily basis.

When I bought the house, I wanted a bolt hole, in the countryside but with at least one shop within walking distance. Wirksworth has all the amenities of a small town with the most fantastic views which I always enjoy with a cup of coffee or glass of wine (depending on the time of day!)

Great property for a group catch up

  • 5 of 5

5 couples with young kids stayed at the house for a bit of reunion in November. The house was perfect for this, really nicely finished and lots of little extra touches to make the stay memorable. The kitchen was probably the best kitted out we've experienced from a rental property.

Well located within Wirksworth down a quiet street but a very short stroll to the high street.

A nice big house in the peaks. Great fun.

We booked Durham House for my partners 30th birthday and saw it as an ideal opportunity to get everybody together. On arrival we loved it and spent some time exploring its many rooms, passages and staircases. The house comprises three floors and the bedrooms and bathrooms are very spacious and full of character. The kitchen is well layed out and well equipped. Virtually all the rooms have a fireplace, we were there in early october and had no need for the fires on as the heating kept the chill off at night. The sun came out for us and we made use of the lovely front garden and had a few walks into the town. High chairs, travel cots and even the deckchairs were used, there isnt much that wasnt catered for. Our 14 strong group stretched from 6 weeks old to 75 years old and we all had a great time in a beautiful part of the country. We had good communication with the owner and the property was nice and clean. We would definately stay again.

Girls' Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of old school friends who had a very relaxing weekend without husbands and kids! Durham House is in a quiet side street and it was the perfect place for this! The house is in Wirksworth which is a beautiful little town with everything you need. We had a fantastic meal at Le Mistral restaurant which is a 5 minute walk from Durham House. We can also recommend a visit to Chatsworth House and gardens and the John Smedley factory shop in Lea Bridge. Other recommendations are the Chatsworth Farm Shop in Pilsley, the David Mellor shop in Hathersage and nearby Carsington Reservoir which is great for water sports, walking and cycling. There is certainly lots to see in this area whatever the weather! We would definitely book this house again!

Durham House

Beautiful house in a lovely little town. This house has lots of character and is equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. If the weather is good, the cottage garden is a must to sit and enjoy the view. Lots of little personal touches which were very much appreciated.

Brilliant

  • 5 of 5

We met up as party of 30 something old school friends for a weekend of catching up, R & R and wine drinking. This place was ace. The kitchen was really well equipped and the beds were really comfortable( important when you have multiple kids under the age of 5 and have been fantasising about a lie for weeks!). Great location - we went cycling at Middleton Top and enjoyed exploring Wiksworh. If I one complaint it would be that the place was very cold when we arrived. The heating was on but could have doe with being on a bit longer before we arrived. The next day all was toasty and we enjoyed lighting the fire in the sitting room. I've got a feeling we will be back!

Location

From the Owner

I fell in love with the house and Wirksworth as soon as I saw them. The house is light and airy with original features and the garden is nicely sheltered, so it always feels a couple of degrees warmer sitting in the garden. I keep discovering more things to see and do in the area and now that I have children I can appreciate attractions that were previously not important to me (although I do miss the opportunity to sample the local restaurants and pubs as often as I otherwise would!)

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Birmingham at 100 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : at 100 Metres Nearest Train : Cromford at 5 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : at 200 Metres Car: recommended

Wirksworth is a charming town on the edge of the Peak District. There are plenty of walks from the doorstep, on footpaths or on small roads and lanes. The High Peak Trail is only a 10 minute walk away, with miles of car free cycling and walking.

The house is located on a quiet street close to the centre of Wirskworth, described as 'the gem in the Peaks'. Almost completely surrounded by hills and within easy reach of magnificent scenery, it has many features of interest, including the heritage centre and an enthusiasts railway line, which takes visitors on the journey down the lovely Ecclesbourne Valley.

St Mary's church nestles in a cathedral like precinct at the centre of the town. Festivals include Well Dressing (started in 1827) and an Arts and Architecture festival in September.

Wirksworth is a thriving market town, with great facilities, including 2 butchers, bakeries, a chemist, toyshop, 2 banks (with ATMs) and some marvellous pubs, restaurants, delis and tea rooms. There is also an independent cinema.

There are a number of beautiful walks from Wirksworth and around the town itself. Wirksworth is situated 5 miles from Matlock and Carsington Water and less than 2 miles from the High Peak Trail and the Peak District National Park.
