This holiday home accommodates six people with ease. Beautifully appointed apartment, fully air-conditioned, secure. Includes satellite TV, DVD player, washing machine, full size fridge freezer, safe, balcony. About Lee Bateman

I am married, aged 47, and have a professional career. My husband and I have travelled all over the World and when looking for a holiday home to buy, we wanted somewhere that we could get too quickly, without any down-time due to jet lag, and with reasonably price flights. We love the Caribbean and far east but not the flying time, and with many European countries, it is not pleasant in winter - we wanted somewhere we could visit at any time of the year and not have to worry about the weather. Cape Verde is constantly around 25 degrees, has long, sunny days, beautiful sunsets, warm and friendly locals, and a really laid back attitude to life. We first visited Cape Verde in 2004 and we were enchanted by Sal.

It's easy to get to, the climate is fantastic, the locals are friendly and welcoming, the food is amazing, the beaches are fantastic, the sea is warm, it's paradise!

Year round Sun, sea, beaches, restaurants, bars, spas, 'Latino-Portuguese-African' blend of music and culture adds to relaxation. Local people and fellow holiday maker’s friendliness. Close proximity to airport is an added 15 mins away. "No Stress" as the Cape Verde motto goes is so true!

Worth flying that extra hour south of the Canaries for more guaranteed sunshine, and far superior beaches. All guests so far agree! (See guest comments)

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is very well equipped and feels like a real home from home. Air conditioning is a blessing although there is usually a lovely breeze from the ocean and we enjoy sleeping with the window open instead. We travelled to Cape Verde many times whilst waiting for our apartment to be finished, and found that the standard of some of the local accommodation was very basic and left a lot to be desired. Vila Verde has been built to the more exacting European standards and so not only are the finish and furnishings far superior to elsewhere, but there are lifts, sprinklers, fire alarms, safety rails where needed, etc. The resort is ideally placed close to Santa Maria, but also in a peaceful location.

Despite booking less than 24 hours before departure all went smoothly plus Lee arranged for me to be met at the airport for the transfer to the apartment which cost just 12 euros. The apartment is bright, spacious and clean with a large full width south-facing balcony which gets the sun virtually all day with open views over to Santa Maria. It is nicely furnished and fitted out though apart from a handful of DVD‘s there is not much in the way of entertainment so you should ensure you bring your own - incidentally I didn't see a single bookshop/seller in Santa Maria so bear this in mind if you like to read! The apartment is on a large but very quiet (in February at least ) complex and whilst our blocks pool wasn't open I had the use of other pool areas a short stroll away. The complex is a 20 minute flat walk into S. Maria but there is a free shuttle bus at set times and a taxi is just 4 euros and even less at 400 escudos. One word of warning - as of mid-Feb the lift wasn't working so as the apartment is on the second floor the elderly etc may wish to check on this? All in all - well pleased with the apartment and my visit to Sal!!

Special interest holidays:

Sal Island is very appealing to lovers of water activities. Others like to sit back and watch the world go by, with nothing to think about other than simply 'fun in the sun'.

Ideal location for keen surfers - wind, body, kite and paddle surfing are all popular pastimes. Annual windsurfing championships held here January/February each year. Also excellent for deep sea fishing, diving, snorkelling and sun bathing. Jazz and music festivals held May to August each year. Great base for island hopping for longer stay guests. Many love the thrill of quad bikes, which can be hired. Alternatively, hire a bicycle, and take it easy exploring. Hire costs about €8 for half a day. Various excursions exist, too, including fishing trips, boat rides, submarine and Island hopping trips.

Wildlife enthusiasts may wish to visit in turtle season. A brand new ferry service now operates between islands.

Coast/Beach:

The beach is less than a five minutes’ walk away. The beautiful sandy beaches are reminiscent of those in the Caribbean or the Bahamas islands. Cape Verde is just south of the Canaries, with a Brazilian/Portuguese/African mix. A steady 10 minute walk in either direction will bring you to a beach - in one direction a soft, powder sand beach for sun bathing and swimming, in the other a coarser beach for watching wind and sand surfing. 15 minute walk away is Santa Maria's soft, white sandy beaches.

Travel:

Sal's airport is 10-15 minutes away by taxi. Car hire is not needed as the area around the resort is level and easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. Taxis are readily available and inexpensive. However, if you wish to arrange car hire Guest Services can arrange this for you.

Distances:

The nearest town is Santa Maria, a leisurely and level 20 minute walk away or 3 minutes by taxi,where there are plenty of restaurants and bars/clubs, beautiful beaches you can swim, surf; arrange excursions like diving, quad bikes, submarine, deep sea fishing.

Tortuga offers excellent bars, including a piano bar, a late bar, spacious classy restaurants to cater all tastes, spas, massage areas, All available to villa guests. If you hire a vehicle you can drive around the island easily in a day

Further Details:

The Cape Verde islands are paradise found, marooned in the Atlantic Ocean a little over 5 hours flying time from the UK. There are 10 very different islands with an excellent inter-island airline for those who'd like to stay a little longer than usual and do some island hopping. The beaches and climate mirror the Caribbean, but without the jet lag (there is only a 1 hour time difference) and no hurricane season. Sal is the most cosmopolitan island, dotted with small colourful towns, such as Santa Maria. Cobbled streets are lined with surf shops; painted shops, white churches, small and intimate restaurants, bars and clubs and amazing beaches flanking the turquoise sea. The temperature rarely dips below 25 degrees, so no need to worry about whether it will be warm enough, and the rainy season is usually a day in August! The locals are friendly and although their national language is a mixture of Portuguese and Creole, most speak enough English to make themselves understood. This is a laid back, chilled out place, where their mantra is "No Stress". It doesn't get much better than sitting in the sun, watching the local fisherman bring in their daily catch or some breathtaking surfing, with an ice-cold beer or fabulous cappuccino in hand..................wish you were here? There are many shops which sell food and drinks. Baileys and Ocean Café bars are popular among many European nationalities, have excellent food, showing all the latest live Sky sports. Great beach bars along the promenade. In August 2012 Tortuga's beach bar, has been voted as being in the top 50 Beach bars in the WORLD.

There are many more excellent bar restaurants, ATM's plentiful. Eating out varies from Local to British, definitely some superb Italian to plentiful fish restaurants, serving fresh fish daily.

Sal's tourist nationalities are typically friendly locals, British, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Scandinavian.

Notes on accommodation: The villa is airy, bright and open plan. It has a large open plan kitchen, dining area, and lounge. Welcome food and/or cleaning packs available at additional cost on request. Baby cots and high chairs available on request (subject to availability). Bike hire and car hire available on site - Santa Maria is very flat and a joy to cycle around. Taxis are inexpensive and plentiful, averaging €3-4 per trip into Santa Maria town. Car hire most people tend not to choose, as most activity lays South Island Sal. Outside: Melaleuca is served by a large adult’s pool, smaller children’s pool, Cushioned terrace loungers, a children’s playground and a snack bar. Two minutes’ walk away there is a football pitch and tennis courts. Villa Verde is a new resort and so there are bars, shops, banks and other facilities opening each month. The nearest mini market is 30sec walk away located in the main square of Vila Verde Resort, called ' Falmers' and there are many more shops and supermarkets in Santa Maria. The resort is fully managed and has 24hr CCTV and security patrols at all times to ensure there are no unauthorized visitors. Taxis are available within a 2 minute walk of the apartment from reception and a shuttle bus service runs to Santa Maria & Ponta Preta beach. Guest services are located by reception. The beach extends for around 7 miles; you can join it from the Vila Verde resort. Sal's climate averages around 25-30c daytime, with pleasant soothing breezes. Generally no less than 16c in the evenings. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Your apartment will been cleaned before you check in and at the end, more frequent service is available on request and charges. Bedding and towels are included for the first 4 guests. Please bring your own beach towels and cot bedding if you wish to hire a cot.

the property was fine....modern and well equipped.

although I had no problem with the actual apartment..i had a major problem with the resort ...firstly the pool I was told was there and looks amazing in the photos Mr Bateman has on the website.....is in fact empty and has been for 4 yrs.....the pool in the next door complex was disgusting....green with algie and full of leaves....i wouldn't put a fish in it.the resort is like a ghost town....if you want quiet and to see hardly a soul..then it's the place to go. the one supermarket onsite is vastly understocked and overpriced. The walk into Santa Maria is roughly 35mins...so if you have to shop there you will have to can it back..costing around €3 a time....be careful when booking from Mr Bateman he took my money and then informed me the pool was not functioning....knowing full well it wasn't before money changed bank accounts....i was then told the next pool was fine to use but when I checked it out...it was not...green and horrible...in fact I was so disgusted with these findings that I found another apartment and left after 9 days....i has problems finding somewhere else otherwise I would have moved much sooner....i tried to get my money back but to no avail....i had a 12yr old child with me who wanted to swim daily but couldn't....if you are happy to look from the balcony into 2 empty pools....wich you were lead to believe were functioning then fine....but make sure you get the full facts before you book from Mr Bateman....as you will stand no chance of getting reimbursed for the misrepresented resort.....good luck.....you will need it there.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, I would like to start by apologising for the inconvenience caused to you on your holiday, from our very first communication I did inform you that our pool was out of use and gave you every opportunity to cancel, but you informed me on two occasions this would not be a problem. The pools are communal and we do not have any control over the up keep and maintenance of them, there was 8 other pools open the dates you traveled. There was a problem with the sofa, it was only cosmetic and did not effect the function or comfort, which again I informed you about as soon as I heard from my property manager, I also sent pictures before your stay, and once again I gave you an opportunity to cancel but again you informed me this would not be a problem (The sofa was taken away the day after your stay and was completely recovered and back in the apartment one week later) Vila Verde can be quite, thats what not only our guests but other holiday makers and other rentals like about it, we believe we have in no way misrepresented our apartment, and do our upmost to give our guests as much information about the apartment and the island as possible, which is sent to all guests that book, and also inform guests as soon as possible about any changes. I also pre-arranged a taxi as requested by you, to pick up your group and take you directly to your apartment, which is a service we offer for all our guests. The taxi driver (who was still waiting for you at the airport), will take you to meet our property manager who will show you to the apartment, the amenities and facilities and give you the keys. We have found this to be the best way as Vila Verde has some 1400 units, unfortunately you decided to hale your own taxi, so that driver had no idea were our apartment was on the resort. We received your email and immediately contacted our managers who promptly met you at reception and took you to the apartment. You did inform me that you would not be staying for the last five days, we thought it only right as you were not happy, to reimburse you, and made a bank transfer for the five days you would not be staying, the day you checked out on the 4th April. Again I am sorry for the unfortunate circumstances you encountered, we believe we offer fantastic value for money, and the property and facilities on offer are in no way misrepresented, we thank you for your feedback, take it onboard, and will try to improve on your comments.

Relaxing stay in a lovely apartment

We had a very relaxing stay in this apartment which was spacious, comfortable, and nicely furnished. The only extra thing we could have possibly wished for would have been to have a parasol on the balcony as it was such a sun trap with sun from breakfast-time right through to the early evening. The pool in our block was out of action (which the owners had warned us about before we booked) but it was only a short stroll to the pool at the block next door, which we had mostly to ourselves! The apartment itself was in a very large and sprawling complex, but it was very quiet as most of the apartments seemed unoccupied. It was a good 5-10 minute walk to the main reception area which was also near the main pool which had a bar and free wi-fi. There was also a small supermarket on site (which we found basic and a little expensive) a couple of restaurants, a bakery and pizzeria, a coffee shop and an ice-cream parlour. There was a BBQ one evening at the clubhouse with live, local music which was enjoyable and excellent value for money. The complex itself was a 5 minute taxi ride from the main resort town of Santa Maria. Santa Maria had a lovely beach with crystal-blue water, not unlike the Caribbean, and there was a reasonable choice of restaurants. The locals there were very friendly too.Transport into Santa Maria from Vila Verde was also provided by a free shuttle bus (passes were available in the apartment). This left at various times throughout the day, but space was limited to about 15 passengers and it was difficult to get on it in the early evening. Taxis were cheap enough however at 3-4 Euros each way. On one day we hired a jeep to explore the attractions on the island which you can see in pretty much half a day. The salt lake is definitely worth a visit and was a highlight on a mostly undeveloped, barren, desert island. The only thing that marred our stay slightly was the very strong wind. When the sun went behind a cloud (which it often did in the afternoons), it felt chilly! Luckily the balcony of the apartment was mostly sheltered from the cold wind, so we often retreated there in the afternoon to soak up the sun. All in all we had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and I would not hesitate to recommend this apartment if you are after a quiet, relaxing, self-catering holiday.

Very relaxing stay

Very clean apartment, no problems as everything sorted out by Lee (owner) before we left the UK. Ideal location for everything on Sal. Close enough to walk to the beach(15min walk), 3 euros into Santa Maria by taxi.

Apartment has everything you need for your stay, 2 spacious bedrooms, 1 large bathroom and 1 shower room.

Would definitely recommend it to friends and family, will definitely use again next time we go back to Sal, Cape Verde.

Booking Notes:
£200/ €250 refundable deposit is required to hold the apartment whilst you secure flights, once flights are booked this becomes a firm deposit. Full payment is required 12 weeks prior to travel and is then non-refundable. Bookings of at least 1 week are taken usually with at least 4 weeks prior notice, although late bookings are possible.

Changeover Day:
Due to flights coming in daily from all over the World, we are completely flexible with what day you wish to arrive and leave.

Notes on prices:
Keys must be returned via post or to their collection point. The deposit will be refunded in full once the property has been checked/ itinerary closed over, and guests contact us on their arrival back home...either in GBP or Euro. Please note the apartment rate per week assumes 4 occupants, if there are more than 4 guests please add £50 per week to the rate to cover the cost of additional linen, towels and bedding.
