House in Nethy Bridge, Nr. Aviemore, Scottish Highlands, Scotland - Few Minutes Walk To Village Centre But Completely Private With Direct Access Balnagowan Forest

This beautiful Aberdeen granite house designed by the renowned Edinburgh architect, Lorimer, was built at the turn of the century as a private residence but subsequently became a hotel and for a period was owned by BP before being returned to a private residence for the current owners over twenty years ago. It has several public rooms including a conservatory and a large garden suitable for entertaining groups or family reunions. The back lawn is perfect for croquet although it is surrounded by pine trees with their consequences. There are open fireplaces in the elegant drawing room and dinning room a glass fronted fireplace in the sitting room. These two rooms can be opened up to form one very large drawing room if preferred. A marquee is erected during the summer at the southern facing back of the house to facilitate outdoor entertaining. There is a large kitchen with an old four door oil fired aga. Access to the nine hole Abernethy Golf Club involves a two minute walk. Note minimum charges.

Prices quoted are for larger groups. Prices can be reduced for smaller parties with a minimum charge of £750 per week. For less than a week but for larger groups there is a minimum charge of £1,500. About the Owner

Retired couple whose main residence is in Speyside in Scotland and who have owned a medieval town house for over 30 years in Bargemon, Provence (see FR17964). With four chidren, we purchased the Grey House over 20 years ago which made a fabulous large family home. With children now grown up the house is too large for just one couple but is perfect for use for two or more couples or larger groups who wish to enjoy the beautiful environment and facilities of Speyside. We moved to a smaller lodge in the grounds and are therefore usually on hand to help visitors if the need arises.

Best ever venue!

Beautifully maintained property. Lots of space and very practical for our large family group. Extremely helpful owners. Very well equipped - to the last detail.

Spectacular conservatory - perfect for a party.

Activities for all ages and enough room for croquet, rounders, badminton....treasure hunts in the woods...walks...Osprey Centre well worth a visit. The highlight was the zip wire at Aviemore.

Special family deal at the (one minute walk away) golf course.

We would highly recommend this amazing house. We all LOVED it!

Ps If you're thinking of outside catering and looking for the perfect Indian meal try Authentic indian kitchen. It was delicious. Everything prepared, served and cleared away - totally stress free.

Perfect week in the Cairngorms

We hired the Grey House for a group of musicians from all around the world to come together and learn/play Scottish music together. The house was wonderful - beautiful building, plenty of room for everybody, space to escape without being disturbed, lovely walks, stunning forest, interesting wildlife and of course our lovely, lovely hosts. In fact we were made so welcome by the community as a whole that we can't wait to return next year!

Lovely house and friendly and helpful owners!

Grey House is a lovely house with lots and lots of space, situated near the Cairngorm National Park. We were a group of 17, children and adults, and the house was absolutely perfect for our needs. The rooms were all large enough and the two livings rooms were very spacious and nice. There are many showers and toilets, so no need to queue even if you are a large group. The whole house was very clean and a bonus for us was that bed linen and towels were included.

The conservatory was ideal for the children to have as their own place in the evenings. The large patio with a gas barbeque and a large lawn is perfect for a game of croquet or just for children playing.

The owners, Mike and Celia, were very friendly and happy to help out and give advice. We can absolutely recommend the Grey House!

Wonderful 30th birthday surprise

our son-in-law booked this fantastic house as a surprise for our daughters 30th birthday. Couldn't have picked a better venue. This is a beautiful house all bedrooms large and comfortable as are the sitting rooms and dinning room. It was the ideal place to accommodate 19 of us. We could all have privacy when needed and also enjoyed meals all together in the large dinning room. The sitting room accommodated all of us to have fun together in the evenings. Although the weather wasn't great we were still able to enjoy a BBQ as it is under the marque. Mike ( owner) very helpful and pleasant and always on hand when needed. Hope to return again if we can get everyone together again.

Fantastic break!

I've just returned from our second fantastic Easter holiday break at the Grey House, Nethy Bridge. The size of the house was perfect for our large family get together and the location was beautiful. Every room in the house was very interesting and clean, and the conservatory, in particular, was great for relaxing with a drink and enjoying the view into the forest area behind the house. The garden area was huge and the kids spent a lot of time playing there well into the evening.

I would thoroughly recommend staying at the Grey House for large families looking for a very comfortable and peaceful break in a beautiful area. We will be returning again next year.

When retirement arose we decided to move out of the congested south east of England to return to the area where we had holidays as children, including Nethy Bridge, and where we had a holiday cottage in Grantown on Spey. The unspoilt village of Nethy Bridge is in the heart of Speyside and the Highlands of Scotland. The village has a thriving community with many activities both physical (golf, country dancing) and mental (bridge) to occupy the residents. Access is easy by road from the A9, by rail from Aviemore and by plane from Inverness which is about an hour's drive away.

Coast/Beach:

There are water sports available at Loch Morlich at the foot of the Cairngorms which is a 45 minute drive away. The beach at Loch Morlich is very popular in the summer. The Spey can be swum in on the outskirts of Grantown from a small sandy area but care is required.

Travel:

Inverness airport is about an hour's drive away on the A9. Edinburgh/Glasgow airport is about a three hour journey. The use of a car is recommended.

Distances:

The post office and shop in Nethy Bridge is a 5 minute walk away. Grantown on Spey is a 15 minute drive and Aviemore with its train connections is about 25 minutes.

Further Details:

Speyside is renown for its wildlife and outdoor pursuits of walking, cycling, golf, tennis, skiing and fishing. The RSPB's Forest Lodge is an hour's walk away through the Abernethy Forest where a wide ranger of birds can be seen including ospreys at their nest site at Loch Garten. Red squirrels abound and can be seen daily from the Grey House as well as sightings of Speyside's own crested tit. Fishing is available on the River Nethy and Spey. The Landmark centre with tree walks is very popular with younger visitors. Nethy Bridge has its own visitors centre with several walks through the local woods and there are several longer walks direct from the house to Forest Lodge (an hour) and the Glenmore Outdoor Centre by Loch Morlich (2/3 hours). There are tennis courts in the village.

The property is one of the finest granite buildings in Speyside with quite remarkable stonework. It is situated amongst Balnagowan woods and is completely private yet it is within the curtilage of the village. It is a stone's throw from the Abernethy Golf Club, a five minute walk from the River Nethy and a five minute drive from the River Spey. Being in the heart of Speyside it is easy to visit the innumerable attractions of Speyside from the Cairngorm mountains to the River Spey and the many beautiful lochs such as Loch Garten where the ospreys can be seen, Loch Morlich and Loch An Eilean.

  • Notes on accommodation: Due to the fire risk assessment smoking is not allowed in the property. Pets are not permitted into the house. Outside: The house is situated in several acres of forest with a pond at the front and a large terrace and lawn at the rear which faces south. When the house was built it had views onto the Cairngorm mountains but the pine forest has now mainly obscured this view. The lawn is ideal for games of croquet which can be provided. During the summer a large marquee is erected over the terrace which facilitates outdoor living. There are several garden tables, seats and benches. A gas BBQ is available as well as a chimanera Utility Room: Utility room has large fridge freezer, deep sink and washing machine and houses the hot water tank and oil boiler. Pulley. Between utility room and garage the store room houses the wood pellet boiler. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are provided and will be changed weekly. The house will be cleaned weekly. A discount will be given if own bath towels are used. Other: The drawing room and sitting room can be joined and lead directly into dining room which has French windows facing south. The kitchen has similar French windows. The large conservatory opens onto the same terrace; stove for spring and autumn when cold.
