About the property

House in Ferrieres Poussarou, Nr. St Chininan, Herault, Languedoc Roussillon, France - Peaceful, Calm And Secluded Location But Within A Short Drive To Major Towns, Cities And The Med

In pre-mountainous countryside, in the midst of oak, chestnut and pine trees you will find this charming, rustic, but fully-restored stone country house situated in one of the five hamlets which together are known under the name of Ferrieres Poussarou, and which themselves are in the famous wine-producing area of St Chinian. It is there that you will find this beautifully renovated stone country house. If peace and tranquillity are what you want/require, this is the house for you. The only noises you are likely to hear are the sounds of nature, with the occasional harvesting or mowing of a field by a local farmer or your children making the most of the magnificent, completely private 10m x 5m secluded swimming pool, perched on an elevated position above and behind the house, un-overlooked by anyone else but with a stunning view down the valley and across the fields surrounding the house. Once there you are unlikely to want to move but if you do there are plenty of attractions locally.

About Alan Hart

The owner, Alan Hart and his wife, Linsu, run their own international consulting business and, when not enjoying the peace and quiet of their country home in France, spend half their time in the UK and half the time in China.

Alan Hart purchased this house in 2003

Why Alan Hart chose World

The owner, Alan Hart, fell in love with Languedoc when he first holidayed there in 2002. Having passed previous holidays in Provence he felt that Languedoc had as much, if not more, to offer in terms of beautiful countryside, culture and history, sandy beaches, good food and wine and friendly people but at much more sensible and affordable prices.

Working in a very stressful job in the City of London at the time he was looking for a bolt hole where he could "get away from it all" and enjoy perfect rest, peace and seclusion. He found it in this beautifully converted old stone house, situated in a small hamlet at the end of a picturesque valley. He posted a picture of the valley on his work computer, as his screensaver, which reminder of his "little bit of heaven" probably saved his sanity.

A cool house in very peaceful location with lovely pool.

  • 4 of 5

A lovely old house, built into the hillside at the side on a road leading to a tiny dead end hamlet. We saw/ heard no more than 4 cars pass the house on any of the days we were is sooooo peaceful.

The house itself has bags of rustic charm with all the facilities you need, two double bedrooms are served by 3 bath / shower rooms, whilst downstairs one room holds the lounge, dining and kitchen areas.

The pool is on the hillside just above the back of the house, but would present access problems for anyone with ambulatory issues. However it is a delightful pool with pool house, BBQ, dining area, toilet and shower.

Our stay was during very windy weather, but the poolhouse worked as a good wind break, so we were still able to lounge poolside.

The location is excellent and the owners were extremely helpful and easy to access for communication.

The Mediterranean is just a short drive away, with probably the best beach in Languedoc, Serignan-Plage, being a 45 minute drive from the house.

The nearest airports are Beziers (1 hour - serviced by Ryanair), Carcassonne (1.5 hours - Ryanair), Montpellier and Toulouse (both about 2 hours Ryanair and Easyjet to Montpellier and Easyjet, British Airways, Air France, Aer Lingus to Toulouse).

The nearest town, St Chinian is a 12 minute drive away whilst the nearest City, Beziers is approximately 45 minutes drive. Carcassonne, with its beautiful castle and walled Cite is about 1.5 hours away.

Further Details:

St Chinian (12 minutes away by car) has a large supermarket, a wine co-operative (cheap but good wine which can be bought by the plastic caskload), bank, post office, butchers, bakers, two markets (on Thursday and Sunday mornings), selling everything from local flowers and plants to farm produce, fruit and vegetables, wine, cheeses and saucisson, to clothes, to soaps, incense, cooking utensils and even stretches to ex-military clothes and equipment!

There are a number of good bars and restaurants in the town, serving all types and standards of food from tea houses and cafes to pizzerias to finer dining with both "menus" (fixed price for 2/3 courses) and a la carte.

For those of a more adventurous nature there is good kayaking and canoeing (from beginner to more advanced) in the nearby resorts of Roquebrun and Reals or if some challenging rock climbing appeals to you, the Gorge D'Heric (about one hour's drive) is amongst the best in France.

If history and culture is your bent there are plenty of historic sights to visit in this area littered with castles and ruins from Cathar times.

During summer months there are regular events throughout the area, including concerts, dances, fiestas and (if you are into that kind of thing) even bullfights.
