About the property

Cottage in Surlingham, Nr. Norwich, Norfolk, England - Perfect Romantic Getaway Cottage In Idyllic Rural Setting Boasting Stunning Views Over RSPB Marshes

This unique rustic little cottage adjacent to marshes bordering the River Yare is in the perfect location for those wanting to relax and unwind whatever the season. This peaceful romantic hideaway was once the home of the Marshman who tended to the cattle grazing on the marshes, and we have tried to retain its rustic charm with original brick floors and wood burning stove. The network of quiet lanes and extensive riverside footpaths (including Surlingham RSPB Reserve,Ted Ellis Reserve and the Wherryman’s way) make it the ideal spot for walking, cycling, fishing (with licence), bird watching, or just cosy nights in front of the fire on a winter's evening. A motor launch can be hired locally to explore the expanse of Norfolk Broad Waterways, plentiful with wildlife and ample opportunity to visit the many riverside inns. Nearest pub 10 minute walk! You cannot fail to be enchanted by all that Marsh Cottage and the surrounding area has to offer with nature well and truly on your doorstep. We now have a Canadian canoe that you are welcome to borrow during your stay. It is kept a 10 minute walk from the cottage where you can access the wonderful waterways leading to Surlingham Broad and the River Yare.

The cottage is amazing. For so many years I have looked for a little house like this in the middle of nowhere where I can find the peace and quiet that nature brings. Marsh Cottage has given me that opportunity this week, my only regret is that I didn't book two weeks so that I could enjoy it for longer.(25/08/2013)

Stunning setting and an excellent base for exploring. Loved cycling the quiet lanes, walking, visiting Norwich and Southwold, watching the barn owls at dusk. Wouldn't have dreamt of such an idyllic holiday.(08/09/2013)

Three days of heaven. Perfection. Thank you. (03/10/2013)

What a beautiful cottage in an idyllic setting. Thank you. (13/10/2013)

We absolutely LOVE this cottage and its setting. The views, the peace and tranquility made our stay as did the barn owl flying out of the barn every evening. Thank you.(23/11/13)

Beautiful - ideal location near marsh / reed beds.

How much you enjoy any holiday let depends on what you like or expect. This was for me and my wife the best place we have chosen in Britain ( and we've been to some good ones). If you like a private place, but not isolated ( great pub about 10 mins walk, small store/P.O. about 15 mins ), if you want to have countryside one side and marsh/fen/reed bed the other side and which attract regular visits from a Marsh Harrier or a Barn Owl and you enjoy walking/strolling about in almost any direction then this is a first class choice. The cottage is spacious and well equipped but still has its original brick and tile floors. The owner could not be more helpful (and left us some goodies to eat!). We will be booking again. (Also the owner provides a Canadian canoe which we twice paddled around Surlingham Broad - great fun!).

Surfing ham Marsh

What a wonderful undiscovered by us before this trip, the cottage was very welcoming but the surrounding were wonderful. The village church the ruins of St Saviours where Ted Ellis is buried were something special and the circular walk from the church was a treat by the river leading to the pub for delicious meals.😀

Owner's Response: Thank you Margaret for taking the time to write a review. You were so lucky with the weather last week, beautiful sunny spring days ideal for walking your dog along the river! We are very lucky having Surlingham Ferry Pub a 10 minute walk from the cottage- fantastic riverside location, great pub food and very dog friendly too!

Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Me my partner and our little dog loved every minute of our stay, the cottage is gorgeous and the garden was perfect, really cosy and private just how we like it. You didn't want for nothing the owners have thought of everything. A vase of beautiful flowers and scrumptious homemade flapjack was waiting for us upon arrival which was very appreciated, my only disappointment was that we didn't stay long enough

very peaceful and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

My grandparents originated from Surlingham and I was fortunate to have spent many holidays in the village over the years. I am always drawn back to the village, the marsh and river and was delighted that Marsh cottage was renovated for rent. We loved that it was off the main track giving an air of seclusion. The cottage was clean, comfortable and very cosy, the flowers and flapjacks on our arrival were a lovely touch. Surlingham Ferry once again provided a hearty Sunday lunch. Always lovely to buy local honey just up the track near the church, highly recommended.

Would definitely recommend a stay in the cottage.

A fabulous cottage in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a wonderful break in Marsh cottage. The cottage is so beautiful, perfect for us and our dogs. The setting is totally perfect, on its own on the edge of a marsh with no neighbours in sight. We walked every day and read at night in front of the log burner. We had a couple of trips to the local pub The Ferry for evening meals and it was quite an adventure in the dark walking along the board walk and across a field to reach it from the cottage. The cottage was so well equipt and had everything you need for a holiday. In addition there were lots of very useful extras, oil for cooking, tin foil, washing up liquid, logs for the fire, torches for night time trips to the pub etc etc. There were also seen lovely flowers in the cottage and some delicious Brownies. It was so cosy and comfortable and the log burner and the electric wall heaters kept it really warm even during some cold February days. We are big travellers, both here and abroad, and it was one of our favourite places we have stayed, and it is only an hour from our home. We love nature and wildlife and to watch a barn owl hunting from the garden every dawn was incredible. We were very sad to leave and know that we will return. We have never gone back to a destination as we always think it will never be as good the second time, but with Marsh cottage we know that it will be.

Nestled in Norfolk

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in October exploring the area looking for wildlife. We especially liked strolling round the reserve at dusk to watch the owl hunting.

We thoroughly enjoyed having the use of the Canadian canoe to exploring Surlinghams secret narrow broads where the bigger boats cannot go and then out onto the river Yare. The highlight was when a kingfisher flew past us at head height so close we could have touched it. Thrilling!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. I am so pleased you enjoyed the Canadian canoe, it is real 'swallows and amazons' territory and a very special and unique area of the Norfolk Broads! Great that we can access it so close to the cottage. Please come and see us again!
